If your dad didnt bother with you, then showed up 20 years later asking for a kidney for his child - would you say yes?

Not a real scenario, watching eastenders, and have thought about being asked to donate something to an unknown sibling

I dunno, I dont know if I would 🤔

Anthony Nolan have a period of two years, post donation, where you cannot contact your donor. After that, it's up to both parties.

No chance to donate and run.

To all those who would donate stem cells, thank you. Thank you very much indeed. You are literally life savers.

Kidney? I doubt it. I didn't have a deadbeat parent, but one of them had a father who vanished leaving his wife and daughters, then went on to have a second family without ever mentioning the first. So I suppose theoretically either party might find ourselves knocking at doors for a suitable stem cell donor. I'd be happy to oblige if I were suitable, but I'd only give a spare organ to someone who was already important to me.

Error404FucksNotFound · Today 16:44

No.
What if my child or someone else I loved needed one later down the line?
I wouldn't risk it.

Eeyorefan · Today 16:44

Fortunately due to a long term health condition none of my organs are in a fit state for donation, so a moot point for me. However assuming they were useable only my dc could have them

Bigwineglass · Today 16:46

Yes, I would. I would find it hard to deny anyone a chance of life.

And I bet you didnt think your health condition would have any upsides!

(Hoping this comes across in the lighthearted way i intend to!)

I know nothing about stem cells donation but if I could just pop in for like a half an hour blood draw then sure for most people.

Still mite spite my deadbeat though and say no to him.

Catza · Today 16:48

I actually have half brother whom I have never met. My father is long dead and I haven't seen him since I was 11. He died when I was 25. But if he showed up asking me for this favour, it'd be a no. These people are strangers to me and I wouldn't risk my health for a stranger. I could, potentially, help financially in a measured way but that would be it.

For me I'd be too worried what if, say, 5 years later my child's kidneys failed and I had to say sorry, I gave my kidney to a stranger or I would have helped.

practicepracticepractice · Today 16:49

No

Uricon2 · Today 16:50

Re absent father on the beg for organs, living liver donation, yeah, if possible. Academic now as too old and ill, but saving a life is one of the most important things a person can do and I hope I'd have been a match.

I’m signed up with https://www.dkms.org.uk rather that Anthony Nolan because DKMS take donors up to 55.

Most of my family signed up when my aunt had blood cancer. Since she’s not a blood relation none of us was a match, but she survived thanks to DKMS.

Don’t know about a kidney. Family & close friends, probably.

DKMS UK

We are fighting blood cancer. We want as many people as possible to join the blood stem cell donor register.

A kidney, no. But stem cells, yes.

This concerns me also

Or the karma element does - what if I say no, then I am not a match for my kid and need their help! Karma spiral 😩

Stem cells yes.

i only have one kidney so my estranged relatives would be very disappointed 😂

ThaneOfGlamis · Today 16:52

Before having kids, I would have donated a kidney to a known family member. Once I had kids, I would have wanted to both keep a spare for them and not put myself at risk with the operation. And that's for known family members, an unknown one would have no chance!

Uricon2 · Today 16:53

Thought provoking thread @hotmumshit and I had the thought maybe MN could have an awareness campaign around stem cell donation?

godmum56 · Today 16:54

EmpressaurusKitty · Today 16:40

Well, that’s a bit different from the books. Did the TV version stick with Maura’s birth family being violent criminals, @NotAnotherScarf?

Edited

yes.

This kind of thing causes massive family rifts. Dh family still don’t talk to him after he decline to be tested as a donor for his niece. He fully explained it wasn’t just a no and they all disowned him.

Thank you - quite the change from celeb gossip.

Agree that mn should host a campaign! Most people dont know how easy it is. Even the phrase stem cells evokes the image of long needles manually extracting, to me.

godmum56 · Today 16:56

I'd have given stem cells, used to give blood but was asked to stop going because when I got to peri I used to pass out and scare the other donors. Nothing wrong with me. I am aged out now.

Toastersandkettles · Today 16:56

No. The only people I would donate to are my DCs.

didn't we have a thread on here last year about someone refusing to be tested when a distant family member needed a kidney?
