DP chose to hide our baby from his ex girlfriend/best friend until after I miscarried. AIBU to feel so exposed now?

Hi everyone, I need some objective perspectives while I process this. I am physically recovering from a traumatic miscarriage earlier this week where I almost died. My mind is currently overwhelmed with hormones, grief, and total exhaustion.

For context regarding his female "best friend":

  • I have never met her. She lives at the bottom of the UK.
  • They met on a working holiday in Greece years ago and started sleeping together while she had a boyfriend. She eventually broke things off with my DP, he was gutted but they remained "best friends."
  • She has been through multiple partners since, and DP has said that "none of them have treated her right."
  • DP's phone lock screen is still a goofy picture of the two of them, and he still wears friendship bracelets from that holiday.
  • Up until now, I’ve tried to be mature and tolerate it, rationalizing that she lives far away and he was just romanticizing a past chapter.

When we found out I was pregnant, DP was thrilled. He eagerly told his parents, colleagues, and mates early on. However, he hid our pregnancy from her the entire time the baby was alive.
Last night, he finally messaged her and told her about it—and the fact that we had lost the baby.

I just don't understand how he found it impossible to tell her he was going to be a dad, but felt comfortable telling her once our baby was dead. It feels like after the commitment of having a child with another woman was gone, he finally felt he could tell her and maybe get sympathy without their relationship changing?

I broke down and asked him why he kept our baby a secret from her while telling everyone else in his life, his excuses were:

  • "I don't know."
  • "I was going to tell her after that last scan." (Even though he told everyone else weeks before any scan).

Because everything feels so raw right now, I don't know if I'm hyper-sensitive from the physical trauma and post partum hormones, or if I'm seeing red flags that I previously excused.

Thanks guys,

I think it's pretty clear that I'm in big trouble. I'm going to have to have a serious talk with him about this and explain how uncomfortable I feel. I've just got this fear where it looks like I'm a hormonal woman being possessive over a man that has girl friends. I hate to be that insecure but I guess I am.

It's not being possessive or unjustly insecure to stop being blind to what is obviously not right.

Do you think she still has goofy photos of them both as her screensaver or wearing their friendship bracelet from a holiday romance 2 years ago? I doubt it. He is being pathetic holding on like a teenager with a crush. She has the best friend title as he wants to have something that connects him to her as something above anyone else. Does she actually think he is her best friend? Or does that title belong to an every day friend she lives near?

Don't be his consolidation prize while he is holding the torch for this woman. It isn't being mature to tolerate his nonsense. It is just keeping the blinkers.

Good luck with whatever you decide and im sorry for your loss. I know facing what this woman means to him is probably the last thing you need right now

Sorry for your loss.

Sadly, this guy would drop you like a stone if she became available to him.

The thing is whilst he would have her, she doesn’t want him

She made her choice years ago. She has had plenty of opportunities to choose him

and she hasn’t

He won’t be able to have a proper 100% all in relationship with anyone until he stops thinking of her as The One that Got Away but might come back when she comes to her senses and instead makes peace with the fact he was just another guy she slept with years ago

Silverbirchleaf · Yesterday 18:26

He didn’t tell her because that’s ‘proof’ that you’re a permanent fixture. If you had a baby, he’d always be tied to you, and it sends a signal that you’ve moved on.

However, two red flags, the phone photo and friendship bracelet. Although he believes that he can make a life with you, and he saying all the right things, she’s the one that got away, the one that makes him feel alive.

sorry for your loss.

Silverbirchleaf · Yesterday 18:28

Just a thought, has he been love bombing you, trying to convince himself he’s moved on etc .

ByLilacMember · Yesterday 18:31

I'm so sorry for you loss, I hope you recover well in every way in time.
I don't think you're being hyper sensitive, I reckon you're on empty and don't have the mental and physical resources to make allowances for this rubbish anymore

Error404FucksNotFound · Yesterday 18:32

I'm sorry for your loss.
I think you need to prepare yourself for the possibility that he is still in love with her and is only with you because she doesnt want him.

Anyahyacinth · Yesterday 18:34

I’m wondering if you could arrange counselling with one of the miscarriage charities and address this too. I hate to think of you without lots of support 🤍

It's a terrible time but I agree that he still wants to be with her.

I know that getting pregnant again is the last thing on your mind now but when things get easier I gently suggest that you do not get pregnant by him again as a way of cementing things.
I'm not judging this, but I can see that it might be appealing.

You will never be sure if he's there for the baby or you and he's happy to have sex with a woman who's got a boyfriend, too.

Chuck him back.

Dontlletmedownbruce · Yesterday 18:44

I wouldn't read too much into the fact he hadn't told her yet. If anything it suggests they are not in touch as much as you imagined. He contacted her when he was upset. Maybe thats the dynamic between them, he needed an old friend who would listen. For now I think you might be focusing on the wrong thing a bit. Try to give yourself some space to grieve. I'm so sorry for your loss. When things are not as raw you need to reevaluate everything and really get to the bottom of it. For a start the screen saver has got to go, that would piss anyone off. I don't think all hope is lost yet, you've both experienced a loss and that can change people as individuals and as a couple. Give him some time too then you need to have a serious chat and make some decisions.

Morethanalover · Yesterday 18:44

I'll also add that in my experience single men who get involved with women who have a boyfriend/married are either in it for easy, no strings sex OR in love with the woman.

There's no mild feelings here.

The single man/married woman is probably the rarest of affair types.

nam3c4ang3 · Yesterday 18:48

He loves her - sorry to say you’re second. Leave him. I’m sorry for your loss.

greensoup · Yesterday 18:52

I am so sorry for your loss. Sadly there are red flags waving madly here
I am not against male /female relationships but
-.the."best friend" terminology is ick. A big red flag.

  • the lock screen! You guys are one year in,.it should be the first flush of love
  • hiding the pregnancy - then rushing to tell her once you miscarried. If this was a platonic friendship her have shared the pregnancy news with her as with everyone else

You aren't being over the top and paranoid. Your instincts are bang on.

Laura95167 · Yesterday 18:55

so so sorry for your loss OP your focus needs to be your grief and healing

That said. At the point you got to lock screens and friendship bracelets it shoulda stopped. She isnt his BF shes his real life fantasy. I wouldnt move forward while hes wearing those bracelets.

ThatBreezyScroller · Yesterday 18:57

We've been together less than a year, though we fell hard, which is rare for me, not so much for him.

This would concern me more than this woman.
What do you mean it’s not rare for him to fall hard?

You both sound young, so how many times has he ‘fallen hard’ for other women?
And why did those relationships fail?

Are you living together?
I can’t help feel he’s a bit of a love bomber.

Going against the grain but I’m not sure I would talk to him about it just yet.

I’m guessing it will be the end of the relationship and I’m wondering how you’re going to cope with that on top of the miscarriage.
The talk is definitely needed but do it when you’re ready to deal with the extra stress/coping alone.

OllyBJolly · Yesterday 19:03

I'm sorry for your loss. Miscarriages are not just physical events - there's all the grief and dashed hopes to manage at a time when your hormones are absolutely haywire. Your first priority right now has to be your own physical and mental well being.

I don't think not telling a female friend (or any friend) about a pregnancy is a huge deal. The bracelets and phone picture to me are a bit meh- maybe he thinks he looks great in the photo. He does sound quite immature.

It doesn't sound like she's into him so she's no threat. I think he is the threat to your relationship. His responses to you are red flags. He should be comforting you. He just doesn't sound committed. Like a previous poster said he's been "lovebombing".

You may not feel strong enough to confront him. Look after yourself - you come first. There's no hurry to do anything right now.

BusyRascal1 · Yesterday 19:24

I'm really sorry for your loss. It sounds like he didn't want her to know because a baby might kibosh any chance of her being interested in him again.

CinnamonBuns67 · Yesterday 19:32

Oh OP that's awful firstly sorry for your loss, secondly ditch that man, don't tolerate that dynamic it's weird as fuck to be best mates with an ex and have them as a screensaver and keep trinkets they've made you. He's still in love with her, even if he won't admit it. Run for the hills.

Pistachiocake · Yesterday 19:38

I'm normally pro men having women friends (I like the fact my husband clearly values the opinions of both sexes). But this does not sound like a nice woman-having cheaters of either sex as friends isn't a good thing.
But in this specific case, a lot of people only like to tell someone about an early pregnancy in person, and then share scan pictures online when they have them, so for this specific thing I wouldn't mind (as in, I have done exactly the same regarding sharing pregnancy/mc news, and would never have cheated).

BeeHive909 · Yesterday 19:42

Could it be a case that she can’t get pregnant and that’s why he wasn’t sharing your news? Either way your relationship is done. She is his lockscreen and I guarantee the only reason they aren’t together is because of distant. She’s his person not you and I’m so sorry.

Silverbirchleaf · Yesterday 19:42

Maybe not the time but, but have you asked him why he still has her picture up. Maybe you could say you’d be flattered if he replaced it with your picture, his girlfriend. Also, wearing the friendship bracelet. Does he wear it all the time, 24/7, or does he take it off at night. If so, everyone he puts it on it’s a reminder, of her. (Also, isn’t it a bit grubby now?). If he wears it all the time, then he’s got it on when he’s being intimate with you.

ATailWithAnIdiotAttached · Yesterday 19:58

Another “ Man of the Year” contender…. 🙄

I’m so sorry for your loss, OP, and this should open your eyes to his callous behaviour.

You should be cosseted and loved and looked after at this time, not worrying about him having the door propped open and one foot out of it! What on earth is he thinking? And she’s not much better! She should take an almighty step back, if not before the baby news, but most certainly now.

The Lock Screen thing is downright disrespectful… I’ve got my DP and daft dog on mine, DP has his beloved Arsenal badge on his - and your DP has….another bloody woman! Oh hell no!!

He’s never got over her… that’s ok - but not if you’re with someone else in a committed relationship. That’s not fair to you, in fact I think it’s cruel, and leading you to believe he’s more into you than he is.

As previous pp have said, look after yourself, care for your health and well-being. If there is counselling, then take it. You are the important one here.

Kick his pining ass out of it, let him mooch after her forever and ever amen.

You don’t need that! You're deserving of so much more than you’ve had.

Best wishes OP, I hope your future brightens up for you 🌺

and I’m so sorry you’re having to deal with this at the same time, but he carries a torch for her. Better you sort it now than in 20 years time with a life together ti untangle. . Good luck.

The photo thing is so weird. Not even to change it to a scan picture or just a boring preset background.

Its her face he wants to see everytime he picked up his face.
