Dogs in restaurants - I am done!

The hill that I will die on. Dogs should not be allowed in eating establishments.

Just had another lunch spoilt as a family came in with 3, yes 3, large dogs and sat down at the table beside us. It’s gross, unhygienic and anti social. If I wanted to eat surrounded by animals I’d grab a takeaway and go and sit in a vet’s waiting room.

Close to £100 wasted on a lunch where I had a dog licking it’s bumhole in my line of vision.

Yep, she’s chosen a losing battle there 🤣🤣🤣

It's all very well dog lovers saying, Don't go to dog friendly places then" but it's becoming increasingly hard to find places that don't allow dogs.

We were in a nice local restaurant recently for a special occasion. There were 2 dogs there, each with a water bowl beside their table which people kept almost tripping over. Then every time the service bell rang they started barking.
It ruined what should havd been a nice night out.

Hopefully in about 4 or 5 years all those dogs bought in the covid years will start dying off and their owners won't bother replacing them.

We have a large hairy dog who comes just about everywhere with us . Because she has been trained and socialised she is a pleasure to take out and behaves perfectly in cafes and pubs. She has clear boundaries which is more than can be said for many of the public we come across in these establishments.
If she is welcome in by the business owner then no snotty dog hater will put us off!
I too hate untrained kids and dogs but discipline ensured that both our son and dogs have never let us down! Thankfully we live in an area where dogs are welcomed into the coffee shops, even after a wet winters walk, as are our wellies!

You'd struggle to spot DDog when we eat out. She's small and quiet and generally under the table. Recently departed DDog, despite being bigger, was also generally lying down quietly out of the way. We always check if they're allowed before choosing a place and always try to choose somewhere they can tuck away out of sight, never allow them on furniture etc. Sometimes we can't avoid taking them with us e.g. when away on holiday when you're not supposed to leave them alone in a holiday cottage.
Don't assume all dogs are badly trained. Luckily (!?) mine reserve attention to their bums for home

Why would you take a dog on holiday?
Haven’t you heard of Dog Kennels? That’s what my friends and I do. But then we wouldn’t dream of taking our dogs to the shops or cafes either. Bizarre!

I'm a dog owner. I absolutely loathe seeing dogs in cafes and restaurants. Everyone hates it, just stop doing it.

No, you don’t speak for everyone! I’m not a dog owner and I don’t hate it at all. As long as a dog is well behaved and lies under the table, I’m not fussed about it being there.

Sometimes I do find myself tripping over a dog when going to the bar/the toilets, which is annoying, admittedly.

But it is not true to say ‘everyone hates it’.

Not everyone goes on pool side holidays. Many dog owners enjoy scenic hiking holidays where they can take their dog along to go on hikes with them.

Why would you not take your dog on a family holiday with countryside/walks/beaches etc? DS would miss DDog terribly and as we've just lost other DDog, she's having to adapt as she is. There are some holidays where she is home boarded but she's never been in kennels and wouldn't suit it

I hope you don't think that I was implying that your cats were not intelligent and didn't have a sense of their own dignity because:

a) It would not be true

How could she not be mortified that her dog urinated over your stock. People are appalling.

We know you don't care about everyone else, is that not the point of this thread 😂

Maybe you should be asked on arrival whether you want to be seated in dog friendly area or no dogs area like you used to be asked for smoking or non smoking areas 🤷🏻‍♀️

Our Local Costa was lovely .. someone with a great big dog, owner sat at a low table, dog salivating, and table & floor filled with dog drool.

As someone with a dog allergy it’s hard work, sitting on a chair that someone has let thier dog sit in leads to watery eyes, breathing difficulties and horrible itching.

I didn’t have a dog allergy when I was a child, we did have a dog .. it stopped at home, unless it was on a walk, we did not feel the need to take it everywhere with us. It was fine.

I remember going on a holiday where dogs were not allowed, so a family member had my dog for the week.
When we were unloading the car, one of her tennis balls was still in the boot, and it made me miss her so much. We didn't go on a dog free holiday after that. She was family, and holidays were for her too.

I wouldn’t mind as much but I am allergic and my eldest daughter is severely allergic to dogs (and all the hypoallergenic ones). How this isn’t a consideration to businesses I don’t know. My youngest daughter would love it though unless it’s a big dog then she wld probably be scared.

What do you think you’re supposed to do? Stop treating dogs like people. Get them into kennels or with a pet sitter when you go away. Believe it or not people went on holiday for decades without having to take dogs everywhere with them!

Can't say a lot except I agree. I rarely see it though to be honest. I have seen a few dogs in the pub in my village, but never in anywhere where I was eating hot food (like cooked meals.) I did used to go to an inn that has a couple of cats that hung about, but tbh I found them quite adorable. 😃

I think it depends on place. I love a dog in a pub. I think pubs are social places where they should be allowed. Cafes I’m ok with honestly. Restaurants no and they are more formal places. Most dogs I tend to see are just asleep on the floor causing no bother but would expect someone to remove their animal if it was causing a bother

I think that’s truly a matter of opinion…. Either can be worse depending on the individual dog or child in question 😂
