Dogs in restaurants - I am done!

The hill that I will die on. Dogs should not be allowed in eating establishments.

Just had another lunch spoilt as a family came in with 3, yes 3, large dogs and sat down at the table beside us. It’s gross, unhygienic and anti social. If I wanted to eat surrounded by animals I’d grab a takeaway and go and sit in a vet’s waiting room.

Close to £100 wasted on a lunch where I had a dog licking it’s bumhole in my line of vision.

Eating out is inevitably an expensive disappointment. Don't need dirty animals too.
Spoons 3 quid brekkie, highly recommended.

Ours went on holiday with us in the 1970s. Farm holidays, walking holidays and even UK seaside holidays. They loved it, as did we.

Totally agree with you. Completely unhygienic. If it has been raining the smell would put you off your food 🤮🤢

All the more for us dirty dog owners. We seem to survive the germs and the filth somehow

I’m a dog lover and owner. I would only ever sit outside with my dog and would never bring him into a restaurant as he’s very food orientated and we’re still training.

I hate when people liken having a dog to a child. They are not the same.

But at the end of the day I would not allow my DGS to sprawl across a walkway in a restaurant so people had to step over him, slather over complete strangers, wee all over the floor while walking through a garden centre or lick his bum in public - seen all this with dog owners many times, as has the OP clearly!

Nor do I expect people to go up to my DGS, tickle him under the chin or rub his belly and tell him what a handsome boy he is - I don't care about your dog and I don't want to stroke/interact with it, even though you may think this makes me weird. Thanks.

I have cancer and can't get travel insurance as I'm in active treatment so we've cancelled all our holidays abroad and rented cottages in Norfolk and Suffolk this year. We take the dog and as we're not allowed to leave her in the cottages alone (standard in holiday cottages) we eat in dog friendly places. She's well trained, well behaved and falls asleep under the table. No one would even know she was there.

I've never seen any of the dogs that get described in these posts in any cafe or pub. According to some posters all dogs do is jump up, slobber, bark and attack people 🙄

Tie them up outside. Put them in kennels. Go self catering. Don't inflict your dogs on us.

It does seem odd that dogs seem to be allowed in so many more places these days. I work in a co- working office and the people who run it organised a ‘bring your dog to work day recently’. I also saw a woman on the tube who gave her a dog a seat - it wasn’t busy but still, when did that become acceptable?

My DB is allergic to dogs, at its worst it impacts his breathing and there must be others in the same boat.

Stick your kids in a Kennels. What the absf%%^ are you suggesting, that people put their beloved pet in a cage.

Well, I don’t know where you have seen dog owners doing all those things but I am definitely against that, especially weeing on the floor.

It's ok to not want to be in places where dogs are allowed. But YABU for going to a dog friendly restaurant and using rude language to describe other customers that have as much right to be there as you do, and are within the rules of the establishment.

It doesn't sound as though the dogs did anything wrong other than exist in your space. You are being rude.

If you don't like dogs go to somewhere that doesn't allow dogs.

Unfortunately it is not safe to tie a dog outside anywhere these days as someone will steal them.

There's more dirty animals in Wetherspoons than a local cafe.

My favourite restaurant has an enormous golden belonging to the owner. It's partly why DS and I love it! He's huge and stretches himself across the doorway. Later on, he'll amble around the tables. DS was chuffed to bits when he came to sit under ours. We all know not to feed him.

Owner doesn't cater for tourists; just locals, so anyone objecting would just be invited to find another restaurant.

Especially in the Outer Hebrides, where half the produce (often home-made) is sold in road-side honesty boxes and there are very few places to eat out in at all. And one entitled dog owner has to ruin it for everyone. It figures.

So trying to wrap up my opinion on this "hill to die on" you guys are fine for a dog to lead the blind, sniff out bombs. Protect your home, fight and protect on a battlefield, ....just not be near you and your burger and chips.

I complained to staff at the till in John Lewis after seeing a dog wandering around womenswear sniffing at the clothes. It was pretty clear she shared my view.

What the hell is wrong with people? My aunt and my BIL&SIL have had dogs for years and theirs have only been allowed to sit outside a pub, away from other people, even on New Years’s Day. My aunt was horrified when she saw dogs in restaurants and department stores.

They know. They simply couldn't care less.

Cf. the poster upthread who complained because a customer dared look disapproving of her dog and asking if the she was eating off the floor.

Working dogs can work but to say that then entitles their owners-who in most cases have dogs that do none of these things-can bring them into a restaurant to slobber shitbits out of their bum is not on.

I take my 2 little dogs everywhere I don't let them on any furnishings I am respectful of other people's space the reason I take them with me is because there to young to be at home alone and even when their older I will take them with me because I love my pooches and don't want them sat at home bored !
People need to be a bit kinder dogs are innocent animals at the end of the day x

I did a second tale when I saw a cockerpoo in John Lewis a few years ago!! I have dogs but no way would I take them on a shopping trip or a restaurant. Maybe for a coffee OUTSIDE.

I've just come back from the Lakes with my dog; he had a great time in the pubs and restaurants, and no issues with anyone complaining about us or giving us the side-eye. He was deeply upset when the man at the table next to us gave his XL bully a bowl of chips under the table, and I wouldn't let him go over to share them. That was the only issue we had.

Obviously, we went to dog-friendly establishments. Had there been any cat-friendly pubs, I would have avoided them due to allergies. I'm not sure why people who don't like dogs cannot do the same? The solution to their problem just seems too simple to me, so clearly I am missing something?

Surely you have heard of dogs being stolen for ransom, for cruel puppy farm breeding and even for dog fights and hare coursing. I’d never leave my dog unattended as the consequences could be too horrific to contemplate
