Dogs in restaurants - I am done!

The hill that I will die on. Dogs should not be allowed in eating establishments.

Just had another lunch spoilt as a family came in with 3, yes 3, large dogs and sat down at the table beside us. It’s gross, unhygienic and anti social. If I wanted to eat surrounded by animals I’d grab a takeaway and go and sit in a vet’s waiting room.

Close to £100 wasted on a lunch where I had a dog licking it’s bumhole in my line of vision.

If none dog owners visited cafes and restaurants in the same numbers as dog owners, then businesses wouldn't need to accommodate dogs. Our local tea room on the edge of a country park used to be three quarters empty when they didnt allow dogs. Since turning dog friendly last year theyre mostly full. Families dont go out for walks like they used to. Kids are usually stuck at home on devices or going to activity clubs.

She’s now saying the dog is an assistance dog from what I’ve read. The problem is so many people trot this out just to get their animals into places. There’s no register for assistance animals in the UK, they don’t need to be wearing patches/leads etc to indicate that they’re assistant animals and restaurants aren’t allowed to ask to see training records etc. Many people are owner training these dogs without any sort of proof that they’re assistance animals, it’s madness.

There was a massive dog waiting in the ticket queue in clarks the other day. Practically took up the whole kids department! Barely any space for kids to test out their shoes I don’t know why they’re even allowed in shops or why people bring them. And I love dogs but there’s a time and a place and somewhere crowded and limited for space is not it.

Dog owner. Parents. Totally agree with you and I hate it. Disgusting and unnecessary. Pubs yes. Restaurants no.

comparing dogs and animals is like comparing apples and oranges.

To be fair though, I did used to have a friend who once got out the potty next to the table and let her toddler shit in the restaurant…. Never went anywhere with her again!

Impressive, as most dogs only have comparable intelligence to a two year old child. Crows have comparable intelligence to seven year olds.

I used to know a dog who loved going to kennels, he had a whale of a time. Probably more comparable to summer camp. They're not locked up 24/7 for a start.

(Allergies aside) both of which you're far less likely to become ill from than anything similar from a human. Debates are healthy but these threads rarely have any real logic other than 'because ew'.

yanbu. I've said it before but it will take a few incidents of dogs attacking other dogs or people for this to become the less common option. I was in a cafe the other day and the dog bit its owner and drew blood, then went for someone else. the owner said it was reactive something or other but why would you take a dog like this into a cafe.

Pub cats have been doing this for as long as there have been pubs. They also sit on the soft furnishings and lick themselves in public. As many people are allergic to cats as dogs.

Most restaurants would close if they banned dogs here, and those with disabilities often say they feel more welcome. Had meals ruined by screaming kids knocking things over, never by a dog. And as my kids didn't have dogs when they were born, it's good for them to have the health benefits of being near them (less chance of asthma etc) and to be used to dogs as friends with disabilities need their dog, so was important to make sure my kids knew to welcome them.

I'm a dog owner. I absolutely loathe seeing dogs in cafes and restaurants. Everyone hates it, just stop doing it.

There are lots of option. Outdoor areas, takeaways or leave it at home.

Dogs don't like crowds and noise anyway. I hate seeing them getting tripped over, shoved under tables or even worse sat on customers chairs. Wtf is wrong with people thst they cannot see how inappropriate it is.

It’s always advertised on Google usually, that’s how dog owners find them.

My cats are highly highly intelligent, even when compared to other cats but they cannot open a door.

That said, maybe they can but they have too much self-respect to barge in anywhere where-at that precise moment, they might not receive adoration.

Even so, I have naturally seen a cat clean its rear end and I have seen a dog chomp down on its arse-all slobber and shit bits in its mouth-and there is no comparison.

I hate the way dog owners think their dog is being friendly. I don’t want to be touched by your dog. Yeah, it’s a me-thing. And no, dogs aren’t the same as kids. Not keen on cats, either… No animals in cafes, I say.

What does your comment about 5 eating for £100 mean? Are you insinuating she was eating somewhere low quality? £20 per person for lunch is loads, especially when considering it was likely 3 were kids.

Quite clearly "everyone" does not hate it, otherwise there wouldn't be such huge demand. Your statement is demonstrably false.

I think there is nothing wrong with some restaurants and cafes being dog friendly - but it is very clear that there are plenty of people who want places that don’t allow in, and I think they have every right to eat in places where they are comfortable. There has to be a balance.

We have dogs, but have only taken them with us to restaurants twice - for dinner and breakfast at the dog friendly hotel we were staying in. We kept the dogs under the table, and quiet - and if they had bothered anyone, or hadn’t behaved themselves, one of us would have taken them back to the room.

I read posts like this and agree with the op. But then remember that every time I go to places, there are dogs and they are never a problem. I enjoy seeing them. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Exactly. Let them whinge nd foam at the mouth about hating dogs in eating establishments. It won’t make any difference because they are dog friendly so dogs will be there in force. Yay, love dogs 🐕

Speak for yourself. I don't hate seeing dogs in cafes and restaurants at all. It is noise I struggle with, be that from barking dogs or screaming children. Both should be taken outside.
Please don't speak for dogs that are not yours. My dog enjoyed going to cafes and on holiday. She was not taken anywhere that made her stressed or unhappy. People who forced unhappy dogs to stay somewhere are the ones that are irresponsible, not the ones who take their dogs to places they enjoy and are welcome.

I used to have a trade stand selling clothing - travelled all over the country to county shows, horse trials, trade shows etc. At a particular show held at a particular Royals home I had a group of ladies who stopped to chat with each other at the side of the stand. Lots of 'air kissing etc - all had dogs (get the picture ?). Completely oblivious to what the dogs were doing on long leads - people nearly tripping up etc.
One dog then proceeded to cock his leg and pissed all over 5 outfits ! The owner didn't apologise when I pointed this out just shrugged her shoulders. I quickly wrote a bill and gave her the items telling her they were hers as I couldn't sell them. She was I think a bit surprised muttered I can't I have no cash but I whipped out my card machine! She had by this time gone slight red and was attracting a small crowd - she signed the slip and disappeared leaving me with the clothing.
This happened out in a marquee but I have seen it happen in several shops now. What are these independent shop owners suppose to do ? They get lambasted if they refuse to let dogs in but risk stock being spoilt. Finally our local garden centre has now refused dogs being allowed to enter thank goodness but honestly the backlash on SM was ridiculous !
