Dogs in restaurants - I am done!

The hill that I will die on. Dogs should not be allowed in eating establishments.

Just had another lunch spoilt as a family came in with 3, yes 3, large dogs and sat down at the table beside us. It’s gross, unhygienic and anti social. If I wanted to eat surrounded by animals I’d grab a takeaway and go and sit in a vet’s waiting room.

Close to £100 wasted on a lunch where I had a dog licking it’s bumhole in my line of vision.

I wonder if it's because of the drop in birth rates, apparently alot of young couples are choosing not to have children , they are having fur babies instead . Treating them like humans , dressing them up etc. So the next step is , we take them everywhere with us. I have a small rescue dog myself , she's been with us for years and was always fine at home whilst we were out. Unfortunately she started having seizures this year , she's 15 now . Usually one of us stays at home with her, we went on a day trip to the coast with our grandchildren , so we took her. We have one of those dog buggy, the pub we went to for lunch had a sign up , left side for dogs , right side for people without a dog . We never let her eat of the pubs plates , we took her own food

This. The Hotel Chocolat cafe near me is dog friendly but doesn't say so. I was there and saw a dog, so had to ask, and they said it was, so I don't go in there anymore. (You do get people taking dogs into places that aren't dog friendly which pisses me off.)

I dont take my dog if I am going out purposely for a meal and nothing else. But if I am on holiday or on a full daytrip, then the dog comes with when I need to eat. I Google for dog friendly places 1st, as there are many places where dogs can not go in.

I hate kids but I put up with them everywhere. Bloody annoying though

Not a fair comparison. In all my time of seeing dogs in public places, about 0.1% of the time are they guide dogs. It was never an issue until everyone suddenly got a dog in lockdown and insisted on taking them everywhere. One guide dog every so often is different to dogs constantly everywhere.

If you have an allergy that is truly life threatening, one guide dog is one too many.

I agree wholeheartedly but won't post in case I get shouted at by the doggy people, and there are loads of them.

I will give you that one. My dog is a reindeer herder from Finland. Not interested in other peoplebut absolutely obedient. He looks like a small bear and children love him. They climb on him, cuddle him and he just takes it all as part of the job.
I simply dont understand people who don't like dogs. No one will love you like a dog does.
People who say just leave the dog at home have no soul . A dog does not understand tine, you shut that door you are gone forever.
If you have a dog that children love, why not take him or her out. We share the planet with all God's creatures

What do you, and the other irresponsible dog owners with low standards here (saying it’s is fine for there to be dog hairs in the food, let them lick plates etc.) think of the many owners on this thread who think dogs should not be in restaurants and cafes?

I love dogs and have had dogs and even taken my dog with me out to a pub, but I have to agree. No need for them inside a restaurant/pub/cafe. Outside is perfectly fine as long as they are well behaved and sit on the floor.

I have often seen people let their dog jump straight up onto the seats in public places. They don’t seem to care that it is winter and their dog has muddy paws and once they have gone someone else will sit there and end up with mucky trousers. Keep them on the floor, on a short lead and it is fine. If they are happy/growly/badly behaved them leave them at home. They will be happier there.

As a dog owner I would not take mine into any establishment and would and do eat outside at a table in a dog friendly pub/cafe

that said if I had such an aversion as you I would make sure wherever I went was not dog friendly, then no issues

What about therapy dogs?

Saying that, I have a therapy dog and just don't leave the house because my dog isn't welcomed. I can go days and weeks without even speaking to anyone because my dog is frowned at.

If your dog is a true licensed assistance dog then it is welcome, as per the law.

I can think of many hills to die on, but this is very low on the list
Maybe look around beyond your own bubble and see some real situations that are unacceptable....your hill is very low. More if a hump than a hill.

I have cats, so for me? Not so much

If a place allows dogs, then you are doing nothing wrong by having them with you.

I am a multiple dog owner - always have been BUT YNBU ! I object wholeheartedly with dogs in restaurants, coffee shops and especially the latest 'craze' in retail shops - what the hell is that all about ?! This is definitely a 'after covid thing' - dogs everywhere often not trained and their owners expecting others to fawn all over them. It has been so noticeable this summer - why drag a dog out when it's cooler at home ? Dogs are dogs leave them at home when you pop out to the shop !!

So I really likr cats & my rescue cats have all been long haired but I choose not to eat in the local ‘cat cafe’ with cat hair drifting onto my food.. (ok my own cat’s hair does this at home but she is my cat so it feels different? however when I have visitors my cat is shut in my bedroom unless they specifically want to see her!).

I don’t think animals & expensive meals out in restaurants mix.
Coffee & cake or a panini in a coffee shop maybe, if the pet (which obviously is usually a dog) stays at floor level; and does not pee, poo or get in a fight with other dogs.
Similarly dogs in the actual bar area of pubs are ok (in fact some pubs have bar cats who sit on the bar judging you (I’ve met one!), but not so great in the food service area..

Apparently my great uncle would come down from Salford to visit my grandparents for weeks at a time in the 60s (due to marriage problems).. he would take my Grandad’s beloved very spoilt dog to the pub every afternoon and sit her on a bar stool where she would be given her own beer.. both would return hours later worse for wear, unless my Grandad joined them then all 3 would get in a state. Obviously the dog got very fat & probably didn’t live as long as she could have! So please don’t feed your dogs pints of beer if you feel they have to accompany you to the pub!

It’s great that for once, responsible owners like you seem to be the majority on this thread. Maybe the tide is turning 🤞

Where I live dogs are now encouraged virtually everywhere.
same when I go on holiday . That sounds unusual .
