What's going on in Middlesbrough anyone live there?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gmrz8d31mo

This house fire may be linked to criminal activities at the weekend, where the policemen were killed.

Just before the crash on Saturday somebody's house had been rammed with a vehicle doing extensive damage to the house? They set out in their car trying to find them and retaliate.

It said it's happened to other houses as well?

Is this all linked to drugs?

It's horrible. Where's it going to end? Why would you want to be mixed up in all that?
Is it worth your life?

A police officer is stood facing a badly burnt property. The roof has caved in and exposed the wooden beams. An alley runs down next to the property and it has a wooden fence on one side

Cleveland Police says it "cannot rule out any links to wider organised crime" after the fire near Middlesbrough.

It dosent pay in the long run though.
Better to have an ordinary job or no jib and still be alive.

That’s probably subjective- they’re earning thousands of pounds a day. Prison is just the cost of doing business, get out and start up again. In between sentences you can make a fortune. If you manage not to get killed

VulnerableSleeve · Yesterday 18:29

That's impossible. It's a hugely lucrative market seemingly with no limit and the drugs are used by people in walks of life.

Yes it seems to be impossible to stop. Yet there are democracies such as Japan and Korea who don’t have the drug problems that exist in UK and USA.
Yes, I’m sure there are drugs in Japanese and Korean nightclubs but certainly not on the scale of UK.
I don’t know about other European countries.

These countries have cultures of respect for the law, appropriate punishment and actual application of punishment. The UK has become increasingly lawless, as sentences are not strict enough and are not enforced adequately. Sends a cultural message that crime is bad but not necessarily punishable.

Thomas Cashman is a convicted murderer serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 42 years for the fatal shooting of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel in Liverpool. 1]

You've forgotten about him. 42 years.

He's not coming out anytime soon thankfully

Who wants to be banged up and hated just to able to afford a fast cast and designer clothes?

Sounds like what’s been happening in and around Glasgow for years; it’ll all be gang and drug related

I don’t care if chavs kill themselves or each other. But innocent people are getting involved now and that’s problematic.

It doesnt happen very often. Often theres some reason why they get off. Or some mitigating circumstances like MH or ASD. Or people wont talk so they dont even get charged. Or they dont get such long sentences and they're out after 8 years or something, or even less.

While they're in there, they're still doing deals and stuff anyway.

Lemonorzo · Yesterday 18:45

Zero investment for decades. Decimation of industry. Nothing has replaced it work wise.
MPs talk about investing in the ‘North’ they mean Manchester.
The NE has a small population and isn’t as important as other areas in terms of votes so it’s forgotten.

people on here talk about how there’s lose loads of jobs locally to them, this isn’t true on Teesside, there’s nothing now. Lots of people worked for local government and that’s been cut to the bone, there aren’t other big employers to take over.

Rubyupbeat · Yesterday 18:50

My friend sent her 14 year old daughter to live with her grandma in St. Lucia a few years back, because she got caught up in a drugs gang. Believe me, a lot of these kids come from good families.

What do you mean he’s not the only one? Of course he isn’t, prison is full of people. Many career criminals/ gang members don’t care about that the way you or I would though

I'm shocked they managed to arrest so many so quickly. Shows how they can get off their arses when it's one of their own. Had the innocent people been a random family, not police, I'm not sure there would have been so many arrests so soon.

I always thought those claims of two tier policing were bollocks, but it's true. Police victims get better and swifter justice than we do

Oh get an absolute grip.
The A66 crash will have unearthed a lot more evidence and links to the family OCG, that's why they were able to act swiftly. And if they hadn't and there were more incidents no doubt you'd be the first to pipe up.
I'm a police officer and we've lost two innocent colleagues going out to protect you and yours and not getting back to theirs. Have a word with yourself.

MrsBird03 · Yesterday 19:51

Sorry if this is dippy, but what is the purpose of ramming houses? Does the person not just end up with a damaged car and risk injury to themselves? It seems a really risky way to intimidate someone, and is the resident likely to own the property? So they aren't going to be out of pocket? Appreciate there are bigger questions and issues within this topic, my teen nephew asked me about the logic behind ramming a house and I didn't feel I could answer as my brain didn't understand it either.

I think it's a fair point. Would the deaths of two ordinary citizens have unearthed a lot more evidence, and either way why did it take deaths to unearth the evidence for a longstanding and well known problem?

People are entitled to ask, and perhaps police could help themselves by understanding it feels different, even if you believe it isn't.

It will have been a stolen car.

The ramming is a warning we know where your family live.

Doesn’t matter if they own it or not.

Its either a get off our turf or give us our money normally depending on the issues. Sometimes a hand over the person.

In an area I lived in previously someone had all their windows put in for owing weed money. It wasn’t even a lot of money but the boss man to the street runner was making threats to the runner so the runner goes out and does what he can to make sure he gets his so the boss gets his before it’s his family and his ass on the chopping block.

HelenaWilson · Yesterday 20:07

The evidence may have been in the car, and the reason why they were running from police in the first place.

Two ordinary citizens presumably aren't involved in organised crime, so there would be no evidence to recover.

I always comment on this, their little bit of weed as well. No one replies. No one even acknowledges it apart from to try to claim that criminalisation causes drug crime and that their weed is from a little old man who grows his own. It always is of course.

Tbf my friends that are weed enthusiasts do grow their own, it's easy enough.

Quine0nline · Yesterday 20:12

Parasitic drug dealers, whi-ggers and trash. I hear there a major demonstration by both the Socialist workers party and Tommy Robinson. Oh wait, nope that's not going to happen.

nonevernotever · Yesterday 20:22

Vallies · Yesterday 16:37

With plenty on nice middle class drug users fueling the market and seeing no harm in it.

This. I came on to post something like this. Posts about drug use on Mumsnet often attract a lot of posters saying versions of "everyone does it" "alcohol is worse" "I just use it to relax/have fun/fit in". The reality is that if we (as in the country) are to have any chance of getting organised crime under control we need everyone to play their part by not consuming the products of organised crime. No buying knock off Jo Malone candles because they're cheaper, fake designer goods because after all it's not worth what they charge, no casual drug purchase to relax at the weekend, not paying for a properly licensed waste dealer, and not buying puppies from Gumtree or similar.

grrrlatrix · Yesterday 20:23

Local.
It is organised crime/gang related.

From what I read, I think they believed the family still lived there.

Edited to say I have no idea whether any of that is true, just what I read.

Why take it out on a policeman's house that died? If they thought they were targeting a policeman's house

The family of one of the boys killed said they would still be alive if the police stopped their chase earlier.

They'd still be alive if they hadn't been doing whatever they were doing that caused the police to be after them in the first place. Or If they'd just stopped when signalled to do so by the police.

Yes, this is the problem, these people will always blame the police, never ever their own.
In turn the area becomes more difficult to police and horrible for the many, decent people who live there.

Vallies · Yesterday 20:55

Presumably there was no evidence in the police car either.

I think it's horrific that two police officers lost their lives like this, but I also think it's disappointing that a police officer on this thread went on the attack, rather than any attempt to understand that it does feel like a crime has been treated more seriously because officers were the victims. That may or may not be the case, but if the police want 'hearts and minds' they need to understand the way the public perceive them.

ByOpalPear · Yesterday 20:55

I don't think it is. Family members have already posted on fb and RIP posts and they appear to be related to one of the 5 boys.
