Upset DIL has gone home?

ItSmellsFishy · Today 01:00

I’ve had a fractured relationship with my DIL for about 5 years. We’ve booked a caravan holiday together and seem to be getting on fine.
last night she started sneezing and said she thought hayfever, by tonight she says she feels terrible, is aching from head to toe, pounding head etc. she says she might go home as it’s only an hour away and leave DS and DGC with us.

really? Why can’t she just stay in the caravan bed? She says she just wants night nurse and her home comforts.

what’s your opinion?

She probably picked up something at the concert or in the pub. Both crowded venues, full of germs! I’d be encouraging her home and hoping I didn’t get it, if I were you!

Exactly. Immediately presuming a sick adult is putting it on is not a normal response. Care and concern is. No wonder she’s not a fan of you.

Onautopilot · Today 01:25

Perhaps she picked it up at the concert....
Look, OP, as my wise old Dad said

Don’t you think she maybe just has a common cold but is milking it so that she can go home? She went downhill pretty quick on our first day from saying she just thought she had hayfever to saying she felt terrible and was aching all over…

Covid comes on really fast. I bet it's that.
Show some sympathy. The way you're questioning it says more about you and your part in the rift, actually.

And you seem to be doing nothing to change that.

Yes or flu. Both come on super fast, unlike a cold. And it is very sensible to get away from people in this case. I think her side of the story would be interesting op. You don’t seem to like her.

PinkyFlamingo · Today 01:29

"milking it"? Strange words to use.

Delphiniumandlupins · Today 01:30

Why would you want to share a confined space with someone who is ill and possibly infectious? It doesn't sound like you would be very sympathetic. Better she goes home for a few days and maybe she will be back by the end of the week. She's not demanding that your son goes home to nurse her.

Even if she is milking it, so what? She's not taking your grandchildren away, she's letting you enjoy time with the people you want to be there with. There has been no mention of you not wanting to go because you'll miss her or you want to spend time with her. Your company shouldn't be a punishment or compulsory.

You also fail to recognise that she might not want to get her kids or even you sick.

Imagine making someone else's sickness all about you!

You clearly don't like her so you'd think you would be celebrating her getting out of your hair so you can be with the family you really want to spend time with.

Unless you've been a monster to her and you know that's why she's really leaving?

@Onautopilot Raging in August? Really? She was ok to go to a packed concert and out drinking on Saturday night!

That's probably where she picked it up!

ItSmellsFishy · Today 01:36

It just seems very convenient timing - maybe she wants to go home to an empty house and a few days away from the kids. It just seemed to be very sudden from “I’m sneezing a lot, it must be hayfever” to saying she felt so terrible she was resting her head on the clubhouse table 🙄 we have seperate caravans, she’s got the double room it’s not like she’s on a sofa bed.

maybe I am just being cynical as I know what a drama queen she can be.

Yes.
IME with Covid, though, it always seemed like allergies first. Sinuses, then sore throat, getting worse over 2-3 days.
The few times I had flu I was knocked for six in a matter of a couple hours.
Neither are pleasant.

So? Is she not allowed to go out?
You are the MIL of nightmares.

She's not allowed to go out, she's not allowed to get sick. Is she allowed to use the toilet? Will that be a personal attack too?

You realise it's not about you right?

She presumably is sharing with her husband and kids and doesn't want them to get sick.

If she is making it up good for her. She's entitled to a holiday and for most mums that's getting the house to herself.

You're getting what you want aren't you? You're getting your son and grandkids all to yourself without having to share with her?
Let her go home and enjoy an actual holiday with peace and quiet.

Whoops75 · Today 01:40

Enjoy your son and grandkids. Sounds like a great idea from DIL, not at her best-head home. Don’t get involved in your son’s marriage!

You seem to hate her so even if she is exaggerating, is she not doing you a favour by leaving you to enjoy the holiday with your son and grandchildren, free of her dramas?

mrsstewpot · Today 01:41

Regardless whether she's lying or not, why do you want to her to stay if she doesn't want to be there?

mulberrymilk · Today 01:41

You sound so unpleasant. Why would you want her around when you have such a low opinion of her, and why would you want everyone to catch her cold?

I can see why your relationship is fractured….

Upsiedownsie · Today 01:44

I’m surprised she agreed to even go in the first place tbh.

CamillaMcCauley · Today 01:45

Honestly, who finds it “convenient” to miss out on a holiday away with family, other than people whose families are miserable to spend time with?

MyWildOliveGoose · Today 01:45

I pray I never end up with a MIL like you 🙏🏼

If I had a mother in law like you and I wasn’t ill I’d certainly be pulling out the stops to do my best acting as if I was so ill I had to go home.

Have you ever thought about being honest with her? Just try something like ‘you lying bastard of a trollop, why don’t you fuck off and leave me alone on my holiday’ and I’m sure she won’t try to force herself on your next holiday. Then you’ll have some peace and quiet without her and she can have some peace and quiet without you.

Everyone wants to be in their own bed in their own home when they feel like that. That is all.

But when away then a bed is a bed
