To take a Kindle to the F1?

I’m going to a Grand Prix with my partner in about a fortnight. I don’t mind the actual F1, but I don’t really care about the support series. I’ve suggested I take my kindle with me for the rest of the day and my partner is horrified 😅 AIBU? He says it’s quite rude that I’d rather read than indulge him in his hobbies!

Anyone? This is genuinely causing tension between us

Download the app on your phone and then sit there on your phone, I’m sure you won’t be the only one glued to your phone 😂

MageKing · 24/08/2026 11:00

What @WildestDreamer suggests. I do this regularly when necessary. Tend to only read a couple of pages at a time, but it really helps with the super boring shit.

Favouritefruits · 24/08/2026 11:01

If he’s paid all that money to take you I think you should just sit and enjoy it! How would you feel if you bought tickets to the theatre and he read a book the whole way though. Hopefully weather will be good do you can just sit and enjoy the atmosphere with a nice drink.

I’ve paid for my own ticket! Like I say I don’t mind the F1 but find the other series very boring

I’m just not keen on reading on my phone because of the heat!

sure. But you might need to compromise. have your kindle in your bag in case it does become appropriate, bt the chances are it won't.

As I said, I wouldn't expect you to be reading fo rhours anyway.

chipsandpeas · 24/08/2026 11:43

I go to a lot of f1 races and there is a lot of downtime between all the sessions and I use the Apple Books app on my phone to read, can’t be arsed carrying my kindle around with me

PrincessOfPreschool · 24/08/2026 11:44

If you paid for your own ticket, I think it's fair enough. It's not like the theatre. This is a whole day of something you're not bothered about AMC you will watch the actual Grand Prix. I think you should go along with kindle. Show a bit of interest every so often and then switch off and read for a bit, then show interest again. You don't need to be glued to the kindle and he doesn't get to dictate how you choose to spend your free time.

MathiasBroucek · 24/08/2026 11:45

He's being a wally. It's great that you are going with him but it's a long day and you should be free to spend some of it doing your own stuff!

Does he indulge you in your hobbies?

Paying all that money to watch something he is interested in is a lot.

Like I’ve said I like the F1, so don’t mind going. It’s just all the other shite

I took my kindle to the MotoGP. And the TT. And every single round of BSB I go to (which is nearly all of them).

Races aren’t back to back in the sense that there’s always something on track and fuck wandering around constantly when you’ve got a good space.

I will give the disclaimer that I am the huge motorsport fan and have never had anyone come with me to races so might be different if you have the social aspect?

Loulou4022 · 24/08/2026 12:02

DH goes fishing and I’m happy to go to keep him company. I take my kindle or iPad because I don’t fish. You’re only suggesting reading while the other bits are going on.

My idea was when it’s not the f1, I’ll go sit in the shade!

Do it! When I was at Silverstone for the Moto the other week it was hideously hot and I’d have killed to have someone saving my spot while I got some shade

I take my kindle everywhere.

ElizaSchuyler · 24/08/2026 12:50

There will be lots of people glued to tablets and phones because you can only see bits of the track and you mostly have to keep updated via the screens, radios and the stats on the F1 app.

Also depending on which days you are going there is lot of time between practices/quali and the actual race (although it is also nice to support the junior series)

Just check wjether there are any bag etc restrictions on what you can take it.

Another tip, if you have an Amex card take it with you as it usually gets you a better radio.

I hope you’re taking a bag of snacks too, especially if that will piss him off even more 🤭

After seeing the horrendous queues at Zandvoort I don't blame you. Although dd went last year and said it was fine then but this year they oversold and Zandvoort don;t allow you to take food or drink in.

Assuming it's Monza I assume you know the restrictions on bottles & cans and drink sizes?

Yes all good on restrictions.

Zandvoort was awful this year. I can only assume they oversold in an attempt to try and make a huge profit to justify a comeback.
