To take a Kindle to the F1?

I’m going to a Grand Prix with my partner in about a fortnight. I don’t mind the actual F1, but I don’t really care about the support series. I’ve suggested I take my kindle with me for the rest of the day and my partner is horrified 😅 AIBU? He says it’s quite rude that I’d rather read than indulge him in his hobbies!

Dd went to Zandvoort last year and had a wonderful time. She was regretting not going this year (but we went to the London E=Prix instead) but after seeing the scenes and knowing people who were there she was glad.

I definitely think they oversold to build a case for bringing the race back

It has ended because they get no funding from the dutch government and the organisers could no longer afford the costs. Which is such a shame. Plus planning etc restrictions.

We are just on our way home. Its was anything but awful. Far less queues than Silverstone. Lots of people brought food and drinks in. The most detailed bag search I had was my water bottle being looked at and he went "water yeah?"
We had a fabulous weekend.

They musthave been far less strict this year. As dd ws camping last year she was allowed to tke one bag from Albert Heijn into the campsite but those on the general gates had all food confiscated.

Several of her friends said it was dangerously overcrowded and the ques for food and the toilets were horrendously long.

To answer your question @sarahlouise17492 of course you can take a kindle, loads of people only watch the F1, races, practice and qualifying.
We watched the Porche Cup 2 races and the 2 Academy races, but not practice or qualifying for them.
Depending on where you're going I would guarantee you will find anywhere to sit in the shade.
Are you just going on the Sunday?
Most people do other car stuff, browse the merch, eat, drink, etc in between the races

Food and toilet queues were festival level, but the streams of piss running out of the free standing urinals were 🤢🤢 by Saturday evening.
I was glad we were offsite, in a nice clean air B&B. My camping days are long gone. Grim.

I honestly don’t see the problem. You’re going to the Grand Prix with him and watching the actual F1, so you are taking an interest in his hobby. I don’t think that means you also have to sit through hours of support races you’re not interested in.

If you’re happy sitting there with your Kindle while he watches them, I really don’t see how that’s rude or why it needs to cause tension. You can enjoy the day together without having to be interested in every single part of it.

God, don't do that! You can't compare reading on a Kindle to reading on your phone.

OP - definitely take your Kindle. It's small and lightweight. What's the worst that could happen - you never take it out of your bag? I don't know anything about F1 but there is probably downtime between when the cars drive past, right? (Personally, I can't think of anything worse than watching cars going round in circles, but I get that that's a me issue.)

i often now have one AirPod in and listen to something on Audible or a podcast. Somehow, this seems to be socially acceptable when sat on your Kindle is seen as opting out. Perhaps because people think you might be listening to something important

You used to get a free Albert Heijn bag! But food has been banned at Zandvoort for a long time now. It’s to encourage you to purchase on site (in order to make more money and keep it going, I guess)

Last year when dd was there there were people with allergies being scrutinised even though they had the required medical letters etc.
