Friends promised a BBQ and delivered an Iceland beige buffet!

As above really, myself, DH and 3 DC went to our friends’ house yesterday on the promise of some drinks in the garden and a BBQ.

They said they were having issues with their BBQ so would do an ‘indoor BBQ’. This consisted of beige food from Iceland!!

AIBU to find this a woeful alternative?

A brand of shit processed ready meals slapped with a slightly more expensive price tag than the supermarket version.

One would expect that moving to the UK involves an acceptance of integrating with UK norms

One of the huge personality quirks or characteristics generally speaking of the British is that there is far less rigidity about food and recipes and eating times and styles.

British people in general dont like 'feeders'. We consider that rude.

I’m a certified beige food HATER op, I sympathise with you.. i just can’t stand oven/air fried beige, breaded, battered crap. I also don’t like frozen pizzas or the like. It’s just grim 😬

My circle, and my family usually do a ‘bring something to contribute’ type of thing so there’s a bit more variety, could this be something you put forward next time?! 🤣

If I went to a friend’s house I really wouldn’t care what they gave me to eat. I usually see people because I enjoy their company. However most of my friends are really good cooks. Sausages and burgers quite frankly, are disgustingly fatty cheap foods.

We get an incredible range of food here in Britain, and are more open and relaxed about food choices than some other places.

And you can even buy fresh fruit and veggies from Iceland.

You go to small town Spain or Italy and all you find is Spanish or Italian food. Perhaps the odd kebaby type place. I love Spanish and Italian food but lets not pretend 'foreign' lands are bastions of food experimentations and 'foodie cultures' because they're not. They're very limited and rigid. Fantastic at what they do. But thats all they do.

Many areas of those countries have influences from the countries they colonised and countries which colonised parts of them in the past but thats how it has then stayed, it hasnt evolved. British food is ever evolving.

Sounds like very rigid thinking, if it's not snobbery. If someone offered me a slice of cake I wouldn't get angsty about whether or not it was home baked.

I'm with you all the way on that.
Ever seen someone put a cheap burger on a BBQ ? It starts off 3" across and as it cooks all the fat runs out and it shrinks to about 2" across. When it's cooked you could sole your shoe with it.

Same here, I'm not keen on BBQs for that reason.
