Friends promised a BBQ and delivered an Iceland beige buffet!

As above really, myself, DH and 3 DC went to our friends’ house yesterday on the promise of some drinks in the garden and a BBQ.

They said they were having issues with their BBQ so would do an ‘indoor BBQ’. This consisted of beige food from Iceland!!

AIBU to find this a woeful alternative?

Did they at least cook burgers and sausages? Or was it all cold party food?

concertinacornflake · Today 19:35

I think it's discourteous to moan really.
It may not be your choice of food but they hosted.

IronEverything · Today 19:35

Surely if they had problems with the BBQ they could have still used their grill or frying pans as they would have already bought the food? Sounds like BS and I'd be annoyed because we don't eat processed crap.

Evaka · Today 19:37

Don't be mean. You should have been there on the promise of company and hospitality, not some conditional idea of the right food to serve.

hellobaby24 · Today 19:37

It may not have been your choice but they still hosted and provided food.

would you have declined the invite if you’d have known about the food??

rbe78 · Today 19:38

How rude!

[Edited to clarify - rude of you, not them]

ExtraOnions · Today 19:38

I like an Iceland Buffet .. it’s not all beige, and some very tasty stuff.

If you stuck it in a Waitrose packet and charged 4 times more, you would be loving it

MyLimeGuide · Today 19:38

Was there still drinks on offer?

Stopthattractor · Today 19:39

What is beige food?

It does sound woeful but I hope you didn't let on.

ShetlandishMum · Today 19:39

Free food? Friends? What's the real issue?

Crisps, pastries, chips cake etc

SparkyBlue · Today 19:40

Was it an otherwise enjoyable afternoon? Were they good company and hospitable? I have learned that everyone has different standards when it comes to food and I know that DH and I can be dreadful food snobs but other people aren’t too pushed about food and that’s ok.

lavendersweetly · Today 19:40

Wow, yes, YABU. So unreasonable it's actually quite baffling.
You sound so ungrateful and rude, honestly. Why have you posted this 😂

Your friends invited you into their home out of their kindness of their hearts because they wanted to spend time with you and your children, I hardly think the food or where they purchased it from should matter at all. How would you feel if you invited your friends to your home, only to see this nonsense posted online a few hours later?
Who cares how the food was cooked?
What an awful friend.

bosslady24 · Today 19:41

Rude and ungrateful op. They maybe had issues with the bbq and had to improvise at short notice. Maybe you should have offered to host at yours instead?

NeverKnowinglyUnderstated · Today 19:44

So you've had an afternoon bring hosted by people who think they're your friends, yet you then come on here and slag their food off? Maybe it wasn't to your taste but you're just coming across as crass, rude and a terrible friend.

theresnolimits · Today 19:44

I always assume people come to my house for the company, not the food. Because that’s what I do.

Guess I’d better check my Trip Advisor reviews. Oh no, I don’t need to because my friends would never be so rude.

Screamingabdabz · Today 19:44

If that is their usual level of effort, I don’t see any difference between cheap meat cooked on a bbq and beige stuff cooked in the oven. Probably fewer carcinogens in the oven fodder…

Cherrytree86 · Today 19:45

Wildly inappropriate of them OP to expect you and your family to ingest processed UPF, shite - I hope you gave them what for and have ended the friendship?

hopefully you are home now and fed yourself and your family something nourishing 😋 @Bbqdisaster

Silverbirchleaf · Today 19:46

Did they cook sausages and burgers inside, and still have salads, bbq sauce etc?

MasterBeth · Today 19:46

If they offered a beige Iceland buffet as an alternative, they were probably planning on a beige Iceland BBQ to begin with, so no harm done.

But it's disingenuous of people to pretend that you are unreasonable to be disappointed. An afternoon with friends and good food is nicer than an afternoon with friends and bad food.

It's not rude or mean or unreasonable to notice this.

I mean, if you were already happy to eat sausages/cheese etc then you were already preparing to eat processed food.

I think it depends what they served. Some iceland stuff is as good as any other supermarkets - maybe not the height of healthiness but if you were going in for a bbq I'd have written that off as an unhealthy meal anyway. Tbh if I was initially looking forward to a bbq any oven type snacks (or whatever 'indoor bbq means') would have been a bit disappointing regardless of where they were from.

If they weren't great you didn't have to eat loads, just have a few crisps etc and then eat after.

ArcticBells · Today 19:48

Sounds like they did their best under the circumstances

ThatCyanCat · Today 19:49

I'd be disappointed but I wouldn't say anything and just enjoy the company.

CurlewKate · Today 19:50

You just sound ridiculously snobbish to me.

It's food that is beige....
