Otherwise he can fund it himself or stay in the US?

You don’t think a public institution which has cosseted a member of their family and by dint of them being part of it increases their personal threat level, preventing them from being self sufficient until they are in their late 20s, has at least a partial responsibility to ensure that person and their children are kept at least a little bit safe?

In any case, there is no suggestion the taxpayer has been asked to or will be providing security for them. The only way this could happen is if RAVEC provide it. Given their refusal previously (despite independent recommendations to them) it seems unlikely. If they approve it, it will be because his or his children’s safety and security is in grave danger. Presumably you’d be on board with that? Or do his actions mean we should just throw him to the wolves, just like we did with his mother?

Don’t be ridiculous. Diana wasn’t thrown to the wolves. She didn’t want the security and relied on Al Fayed when she was in Paris on that fateful
trip. She also died become was being driven by a drunk driver and wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. As for Harry, being an adult sometimes means you have to live with the consequences of your actions. He has caused this with his words and deeds and now he has to live with the repercussions.

I don’t subscribe to the Megan/Harry hate. I think there is a lot going on behind closed doors that we are not privy to and all families are complicated, royal or not. I adore the Princess of Wales’ style, poise and quiet dignity - Wills traded up IMHO - but I think the whole family is a bit fucked on the whole.

That said, if Harry is returning to the Uk and expecting tax-payer funded security etc (ie if his dad is NOT paying for it out his own private funds, or Harry himself paying), then yes, he needs to work for the Firm and earn his keep.

The irony is, Harry and Meghan could probably have done an awful lot to improve the reputation of the Royal Family. He certainly has more than a touch of his mother in that way. I’m not sure if there is ever a world where he goes back, or if his reputation is too badly damaged now, but it does seem like him being back in the fold would be the best solution for the Royal Family. Not sure it would be for Harry, though.

I mean as I say I am not a fan. He has behaved appallingly and I wish he'd stay in the US but he is the king's son and if anything happened to him we'd never hear the end of it.

We never hear the end of it anyway - surely this belongs in the royal family theme ?

She was thrown to the wolves by the family long before she was with Al Fayed. It is not that she didn’t want the security, it was that she didn’t want a security team who had to report to the Royal Household. She didn’t want that because this had been her life for a long time and was a large part of why she was leaving the family. The single incidence of her death was due to a culmination of events leading her to be hounded by the press at every turn. It was this she was never protected from, and that is exactly what Harry experienced too. Which actions has he taken that are different to his mothers, that lead to the consequence of him being hated and reviled where she wasn’t?

That’s not a confirmation of A) how the figure is calculated and B) that the taxpayers will be paying it.

So the answer is we don't know, and will have to wait for further developments.

That’s your opinion only. Harry certainly wasn’t thrown to the wolves All of this is of his own making and maybe you should allow him to face consequences of his actions. He’s a 40 year old man’s for heavens sake.l, it about time he grew up.

He is an absolute prat but you have to think what a carry on it would be if we had another tragedy like Diana.

There are plenty of high profile people in Britain living perfectly wonderful lives without armed or taxpayer funded security. He also benefits from security threat monitoring at the taxpayer expense. His mother’s unfortunate demise was the result of a highly unlikely set of circumstances colliding, including her own paranoia, a drunk driver, her failure to wear a seatbelt and the the behaviour of the then Press, which has long since changed. It’s simply not a consideration when it comes to spending public money today.

Agree with a previous poster here, I am far more aggrieved that Liz Truss receives a penny, she did far greater damage to the UK than H&M.
I don’t agree with all that they did either, I don’t envy their lifestyle or what seem to be such limited choices versus the wealth they still hold.
So much misinformation on these threads, “they’re broke”-hardly true with their property portfolio, trust funds etc. The query here is that they cannot it seems continue to spend as they have been without alternative income streams. Jam won’t cover their costs, so why the backlash at film roles? If that’s Meghan’s job then it’s clear this would be preferable to many here than ever being a working royal?
”They should just pay for security”-This cannot be simply bought. Armed police cannot be contracted out. High RF security is assessed upon risk. The RAVEC report from July is not yet released and much has changed since then. If they and their children niw reside here, the well evidenced threats surely need reassessing?
The fact publicity is being so tightly managed on their location and schools is very telling. Burnham very tight lipped-“it’s a private matter “, further telling.
I can see Harry (but not Meghan) being soft launched in the coming months by KC at high profile events, Remembrance Day for veterans, IG and similar until the public is seen to be thawing…
It’s highly probable I think KC will encourage some form of working Royal life for Harry & hope that William follows suit. Optimistic yes, but if Camilla could be pushed into public life after years of being hated I am sure Harry can.
The security issue really is a minor cost & detail in the bigger scheme of things. The public have funded far worse characters.

The UK doesn’t have a serious problem with gun crime like the US so the private security over here is fine for their needs.

KittyTinker · 25/08/2026 15:24

MaturingCheeseball · 25/08/2026 13:17

Prince Harry wants armed security. That can only be provided by the government (state). No one can pay for their own armed security in this country, and that includes the King paying for Harry. He couldn’t even if he wanted to.

So Harry is very welcome to pay for 100 heavies - but not ones with guns, which is what he wants - full-time for all four of them, no matter what they are doing from charity work to just hanging out with oafish pals for Harry or celebs for Meghan.

Highly-trained protection officers round-the-clock for four people (two of whom do not seem keen on keeping out of public view) will cost ££££££££££.

But the Uk doesn’t have the same level of gun crime as the US so private protection officers are trained in different ways to protect their clients. People don’t routinely own or carry guns he doesn’t have the same risk.

That’s more than a tad ridiculous. Harry is hardly going around on a push bike carrying a Nokia and worried about opposing gang members is he? (Though he may feel that way reading threads like this).
The issue isn’t gun crime.
The standard security you’re refere to is a) unarmed and b) not in posession of the well-evidenced & credible threats to Harry & his family. This is updated frequently and therefore tightens security as required, though majority of Joe Public would never know.
If having this makes his return more comfortable & means his wife & kids can move freely I cannot understand why this is of bother to anybody here. It’s a drop in the ocean in the big picture of things seriously

Because that money should be going to protect Joe Public that’s why. Women can’t safely walk home at night but where’s the police funding to protect them/us. I actually despair with some of these posts where people think the Sussexes are far more important than anyone else is. It’s madness. If he’s that scared why not stay in America where he can have all the armed guards he wants and get gets to pay for it all. Perhaps that is the problem, he can’t pay for it and wants someone else to pick up the tab.

There is absolutely no reason to be so rude. RAVEC will step in if there is a credible threat they aren’t going to keep such information to themselves. There have actually been 4 cases of personal protection officers misfiring weapons in recent years so it could be argued that they are safer without armed protection.

Sporadica · 25/08/2026 16:17

He argues that he and his family need security because who they are (son, DIL, and grandchildren of the King), not what they do, presents a danger. Should John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak, and Keir Starmer all come back and be PM again to earn the cost of their lifetime security? These are separate issues from the lack of safety on the streets of the UK for members of the public and women in particular; the government should be able to address more than one problem at once and pay more than one bill.

How do you know that can "stay in the US"? His US immigration status was sealed after the Heritage Foundation sued the US State Department and DHS to make his status public and a federal court ruled against them and said his privacy overruled the public's perceived "need to know" and publication of the information could negatively impact his safety and privacy.

Where did this come from? He hasn’t said a thing. No one’s twerking is worth money. But, he’ll always be a Prince. He’s the son of the monarch.

The government doesn’t have the money to pay for everything I’m afraid and what a scary idea that you think they can. The Sussexes aren’t more important than the public and keeping streets safe for the public is of far more importance I’m afraid. As for Harry possibly not being able to stay maybe he lied on his visa application about his publicised drug use and again that’s down to him

OonaStubbs · 25/08/2026 17:21

Harry should be stripped of all his royal privileges and forced to live as a commoner.

caringcarer · 25/08/2026 18:06

nomas · 25/08/2026 14:09

So? She’s still British. The Queen’s husband was in Greece.

Harry and Meghan are not working royals of their own choice, so they need to pay for security if they require it. They probably wouldn't need it if Harry had not boasted on TV about how many Taliban he killed. He put target on his own back and that of his wife and kids. I don't know how Meghan can ever forgive him for that.

caringcarer · 25/08/2026 18:09

Also politicians who become PM even for a short while have security as part of their terms and conditions. Look at the number of politicians who have been murdered, maimed or threatened in the last 30 years.

Exactly. She left the family because they treated her so badly her mental health was seriously damaged, and everyone loved her, supporting her for it. Even after she published a book and did an interview laying bare the secrets of the institution. wonder why, when her son did the same, he is hated. Is it because he is ginger?

The press and public turned on her before her death they were sick of it all they just got sicker of it quicker with Harry because of how our news cycles these days back in Diana's time we had news at ten daily newspapers and evening news etc these days its 24/7 rolling news shenanigans blasted on repeat it gets old fast
