Mirena Coil or tranexamic acid (AIBU to be hesitant)

Due to have a mirena coil fitted Thursday. I’m so hesitant as I’m scared it will cause me even more pain (adenomyosis) and effect my mood (already suffer anxiety)

The alternative is to just take tranexamic acid every month.

I don’t need contraception, I just need to stop the heavy bleeding (anaemic)

desperate for advice from people who have made the decision themselves as HCPs just want to push the coil

Never beard of anyone else with adenomyosis in real life so wanted to say hi.

tranaxemic acid does work but it prolongs the period to like 10 days so a third of our lives bleeding. Less pain and slower flow though.

I’ve been putting off the coil for years as heard horror stories!

I have taken tranexamic acid and it shortened my period. It didn't make them longer.

I’ve tried mirena, TXA, COC, POP, all for adenomyosis. Booked for hysterectomy soon. Can’t take anymore. How old are you OP? Solidarity with you both

Hi. I’ve been taking tranexamic acid for the last year due ti heavy bleeding but unfortunately it seems to have made little if any difference unfortunately. You could try that first in the hope it will work better for you, then have the coil fitted as a last resort?

I am having the coil fitted next week and wish I’d had it done sooner as anaemia has got worse over the last year and I have hardly any hair left.

Tranexamic acid a complete game changer. I was feeling faint on my period and would flood / not want to leave the house. Was severely anaemic.
I have taken the pills three times a day on first four days of bleeding. Hardly bleed at all. It has not lengthened my period but just meant a few days of old blood at the end of period.

I would definitely try the tablets first before taking more drastic steps.

Hello, tranexamic acid did nothing for me but the Mirena coil has been a game-changer. Much, much lighter periods, compared to my debilitating periods beforehand. I don’t have adenomyosis, however, but do have fibroids.

Tranaxemic acid makes a hughly positive difference to who heavy my periods are.

I have endo & adeno.

No experience with coil.

I’ve got the coil but it’s been disappointimg. The flooding and severe pain stopped so it was judged to be an improvement, but I was still bleeding 50% of the time and it was uncomfortable. Less than two years later I started flooding again and I’ve now got a wait of several weeks for a scan to see if it’s still in place.

I wish they’d do hysterectomies instead of forcing women to try all these stages first!

The tranexamic acid made a big difference but it was hard to time it with the heaviest days as my periods went on

I was severely anaemic and also have issues with cervical scaring have tried the pill, tranexemic acid etc and had a merina fitted last autumn and honestly it has been life changing have gone from 10day heavy periods where I was up multiple times a night to change to a few days of spotting every 6 weeks..

The mirena obviously affects woman differently. You won’t know whether it suits you unless you give it a try. It was a game changer for me.

Why not just take the mini pill or a progesterone and stop periods full stop, that way you can see which one works for anxiety and mood and you aren’t totally stuck with a coil, as you can try different brands and strengths.

it’s not actually recommended for women with Adeo to have the coil, so not sure why your provider is suggesting this at all.

If you think it’s a bad idea for you and your brain is telling no that just listen and don’t have it.

I have adeo and take a progesterone non stop, haven’t had a bleed or period for 2+ years now, I take the one called norethisterone.

Had a Mirena fitted for ridiculously heavy and constant bleeding that had lasted a couple of years. Had tried tranexamic too. Didn't work for long.

The Mirena stopped the bleeding in weeks!!
No pain. No issues. Nothing.
I loved it.
Was almost sad when I had to take it out in Menopause 😂😂😂

Tranexamic acid was a godsend.

Mirena made me unable to run and sometimes even walk.

Got mirena as part of hrt. Wish I had one years ago. Took 6 plus months to settle then no periods after a year. First time I havnt been anemic

Tranexamic acid is meant to reduce heavy periods not lengthen them. \It didn’t work for me, so have Mirena fitted which was an absolute godsend.

I tried mini pill made me bleed continuously for 6 months. Sadly not a win for everyone

I have endo and got the coil 3 years ago, it’s honestly changed my life. I don’t have any side effects like I did with the pill (and I also have anxiety). I have a tiny amount of spotting and minimal cramps, whereas before I would be in so much pain and have really heavy bleeding for the first few days, plus all the bloating and PMS that came with my period. I wish I’d known about it sooner.

I had horrendous periods in peri menopause for years. Had the mirena and they stopped completely. Never felt so much relief.

If I were you I would try the least invasive thing first. I have PCOS, Endometriosis and am now in perimenopause so having heavier periods.

The coil made me have back ache and constant spotting for eight months (plus a prolapse meant it was always poking me) so that was removed.

The pill didn’t settle and caused irregular bleeding and made me depressed.

So I’m now left with using tranexamic acid, and oh my god it’s amazing for me! I take it on day two, my really heavy day (blood clots every hour the size of fifty pence) and it slows the bleeding by about 75% by the end of day three and my period has ended by day five. Wonderful!! I know not everyone has such success, but you don’t know if you’re one of the lucky ones unless you try it first and it’s much less invasive than the coil which I found agony to have inserted.

I had adenomyosis. Tried the Mirena coil but it fell out after a week. I was on Tranexamic Acid for 15 years. It stemmed the bleeding but made my periods 10 days long. Eventually I paid for a private hysterectomy and that was the best decision ever.

On my third Mirena. Works for me.

I’ve had Mirena for 5 years now as part of HRT and flooding bleeding. It’s been amazing, the bleeding before I went on it was constant and heavy. I tried the acid which did slow it down, but as soon as I stopped it, it started off heavy again and I was just feeling awful.

With the Mirena, the bleeding slowed down hugely pretty quickly then went into normal very light period cycles within a couple of months. I felt a little emotional for about a month and had a couple of headaches when I first got it, but that soon passed. I’m so pleased I’ve got it, so much so I’ve just had my second.

Hi op. I don't have adenomyosis but my periods were so heavy they were making me very anemic and also seriously affecting my life and work. Id bleed through period pants, a tampon and pad within the hour and need to change trousers etc.

My nana was the same and had a hysterectomy. I took mefenamic acid and it helped a bit, it helped with the pain and eased the flow a bit but not enough.

I had the mirena coil fitted February this year and it's changed my life. No bad side effects. Hardly any period now. I wish I'd done it years ago. I'm 45.
