Crash on A66 that killed two police officers and 5 others…

bookworm1982 · 22/08/2026 18:53

Am I correct that the other victims were 5 lads travelling in one car the wrong way up the motorway? EXACTLY the same as the 5 Irish lads who died a few days ago travelling the wrong way up a motorway too? Surely not twice in a week? Is there some sort of mental social media thing going on, telling kids to drive up the wrong way? Like a dare? Just cannot believe it happened once, let alone twice. Just devastating.

There's been a significant difference in coverage of last week's Irish crash and this one in England. The official statements in Ireland focused on the criminal recklessness of the teens in the speeding car, and sympathy was reserved for the innocent injured people on the other car, not for the dead boys or their families.

In contrast UK politicians and senior police officers have given sympathy/condolences to the families of all affected by the crash - some of the statements make it sound like a freak tragic accident.

I'm surprised how out of sync the UK politicians are with public opinion.

If that means what I think it means then it’s a strategy to calm the situation

musicandmen · 23/08/2026 01:09

I would guess it is some TikTok thing cos the same thing happened in Liverpool 4 dead

Goatsarebest · 23/08/2026 01:09

There is a social media trend, but it is also a known way of avoiding police capture after a crime. If you drive the wrong way down a road they will call off the pursuit in Ireland. The M7 crash in 2021 when 3 were killed driving wrong way on the M7 in Ireland was a deliberate action of 3 criminals to drive the wrong way to avoid police pursuit after committing a serious crime. There are a good few examples of this without the catastrophic consequences of this one.
In this case the mother of one of the dead criminals sued. I am now going to list who she sued for emotional trauma after her son was in the car that drove down the wrong side of the M7 after committing a serious crime:
Garda Commissioner
Minister for Justice
The Minister for Public Expenditure
The Irish Attorney General
His fellow deceased criminal's estate, who was driving the car.
The solicitors representing his fellow criminals.
The owner of the stolen BMW that he was in, who wasn't driving it or knew it was stolen,
The motor insurance bureau of Ireland who deal with uninsured drivers and compensation. Funded from everyone's premiums.
Her son had 'numerous convictions' and was 31. No impressionable teen. A career criminal.
One of the Guards has been criminally prosecuted by the Irish State for his actions during the pursuit.
The legal action is ongoing for both the civil and criminal cases.
Every criminal knows that you won't be pursued now if you go the wrong way. Why woukd a Guard risk a criminal prosecution
Exactly what happened with our 5 last week. They were being persued after committing serious crime. It was stood down when they went onto the motorway the wrong way. They crashed into a family and they all died. The 3 women and 7 year old they crashed into are critically in hospital.

I don’t think it is as simple as “blame the parents” I’ve no doubt that these boys likely come from chaotic families. But that doesn’t mean both their parents are shit or don’t care about them. My neighbour used to be out driving the streets at night looking for her son. She was a very loving mother. A very gentle person who was horrified that her son was out stealing cars and joy riding. She aged 20 years when he was 15 to 20 years of age. He had a difficult life (because of his dad) but with his family’s support he did come out the other end.

Goatsarebest · 23/08/2026 01:29

In Ireland we don't permit under 18s to be put in an adult prison since 2001 and we have exactly 46 secure places for under 18s to be confined in the Country (though it never operates at capacity due to not being able to get staff to work there because it is so violent). That is the only capacity to imprison anyone under 18. This is completely reserved for the most violent offenders. If you think this has to include teenagers up to 18 years old and what they are capable of, then you can see that any offence other than very serious violence, is not going to get any imprisonment. And that's the case in reality. Of the 5 killed last week they averaged around 40 convictions each, but never spent a day confined because bulgary and steeling cars just doesn't meet our threshold for imprisonment for under 18s. So you get convicted 40 times with no consequences other than meeting a juvenile liason officer, what message does that send to you. Carry on as usual. Until eventually something catastrophic happens.

Nor I. Not long before the Co Kildare motorway smash mentioned throughout this thread, there was another in Ireland, very similar in outline.
One of the young scrotes injured in the stolen car made a TikTok film thingy in his hospital bed with his adoring mother cheering him on, both heaping abuse and derision on one of the car’s innocent victims.
At the frequent funerals of these malefactors, they all carry on like the Messiah has been taken from the community.
But who’d be the Parish Priest who’ll finally say what he thinks about these deaths?

These feckless parents really think ANYTHING illegal is to be applauded, as though their repellent offspring were a mixture of Che Guevara, Rosa Parks, and Michael Collins (not that education ever plays a part in these lives).

There is extensive quoting of comments made by the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin at the vigil held in Graigcullen and by the parish priest of Holy Family parish in Askea, who has presided over one teen's funeral Mass and will do another on Monday. The homily at the Friday funeral says a lot about where that priest's sympathies lie.

Yes lots of this was in the article I linked up the thread. Car theft is a non violent crime so they are arrested, bailed, released and out to do it again the next evening. ETA non violent against a person that is, in terms of crime classification.

I think it's time to establish a threshold, after which the parents are held responsible and charged with contributing to delinquency or criminal negligence, or some other crime related to failure to parent, with a custodial sentence imposed in all cases.

Yes, they are the product of their parents, their environments etc. However, they are not the products of their siblings, cousins etc. I believe the comments are unacceptable and say a lot more about the people making them than anything else. That is particularly the case with the racist comments.

The funerals are standard traveller funerals so no, they are no more a slap in the face to the families of their victims than any other type of funeral would be.

It would be reassuring to see the siblings, cousins, etc., publicly disowning them, denouncing their criminality, and distancing themselves from them. So far, we have not seen any move toward that.

Yes, these are fairly typical Traveler funerals, and the dead teens are given the respect of a Christian burial, which they are entitled to. Burying the dead is an act of Christian charity. It is hard for the clergy all the same.

AlvisParsley · 23/08/2026 02:21

There has been an outpouring on social media already about one of the boys in the A66 crash, advertising a baloon [sic] release on a mis-spelled advert with a picture of the boy in a tracksuit and baseball cap complete with angel wings, posing and pointing one finger.

I heard it's a craze on TikTok but I'm not on TikTok so can't say for sure. We have had a few here too.

I’m beginning to think along the same lines. These young men need something to do that is bigger than themselves and installs a bit of discipline and purpose into their lives.

And we need social media gone.

The Krays did national service, it just turns criminals into fit criminals.

AlvisParsley · 23/08/2026 02:37

The boy in the post above is actually a father - the mother of his child wrote ‘What am I supposed to do without ur daft phone calls and u torching (sic) me life’s so cruel.’

They really don't see that they have done anything wrong, and they never will.

Meegie · 23/08/2026 03:11

It's not a coincidence. The five teenagers (one a girl) who died in the Irish crash were deliberately driving the wrong way on a motorway. They were wearing masks and making a video of themselves which they intended to post on a social media site, to get the most upvotes, they'd said. Very sad for all the victims.

LBFseBrom · 23/08/2026 03:17

This is a very sad and scary business. I feel so much for the families of those who have been killed in this incident.

Unfortunately young people taking a car and joyriding recklessly is not a new phenomenon, it has always happened, often in a stolen car. I can remember hearing and reading about such things happening when I was young (many, many years ago). Cars are magnets for some youngsters, especially boys. They get on a high and don't think of the implications until it's too late.

SparklyBiscuit · 23/08/2026 03:17

I feel sorry for the five irish young lads that died days ago these tick tock social media needs to take responsibility and accountability for their actions im sorry for the family and children on the way to their holiday injuried as well. Im really sorry for the loss of the two police officers just doing their job leaving behind families wifes partners in Middlesbrough Tees side. Social media needs to take much more responsibility so do others. 18 year olds are classed as adults maybe tick tok needs to be banned so does intersgram as well and put restrictions on youtube no under 18s how many more do we need to see doing this kind of thing

SparklyBiscuit · 23/08/2026 03:30

Me to the innocence of others the innocent victims and injuries others have received i hope they make a full recovery and i hope now tick tok gets restricted or banned those officers police officers was just doing their jobs and never made it home to their wives families children. I dont know the full details but maybe the government needs to really have a look about social media tic tok and get it banned before it happens again. There was deaths of driving the wrong way in ireland claimed 5 lives and injuries several more. Its about tlme that the police need to really get to the bottom of this. Rest in peace police officers 💙💙

There was an interesting article in the guardian today about this "craze" with young drivers filming themselves driving at excessive speeds. If they get chased by the police even better for them and their followers on social media

Not sure about it being a “craze” lads have been stealing cars with the aim of getting a chase since at least the 1970’s. My cousin lives in Manchester and told me about kids as young as 10 or 11 stealing cars, apparently some of them even brought a cushion with them so they could see over the wheel.

ForestHog · 23/08/2026 04:53

One of the boys who has been named as Makai Saddington has a tiktok full of videos showing him driving stolen cars in police pursuits.

Also open court records show just over a month ago he was in court for assaulting a police officer amongst other things.

Perhaps now the law will become more stringent? Surely they would have checked is public social media around his court appearance

18yr old with a 1yr old son & no age at all

I don’t think these kids understand they are not only putting their own lives at risk but everyone elses.

The loss of lives of not only the stupid thoughtless drivers but of innocent people for likes on social media is abhorrent. The banning of social media for kids is fully required but I don’t know if it would stop them doing these things surely they aren’t just doing it for likes

GCAcademic · 23/08/2026 06:36

How hard can it be for social media platforms to block content glorifying criminal activity? Governments are culpable too for pandering to these exploitative companies while they hasten social breakdown. It says everything that ThickTok is banned in its country of origin.

Tenofcups · 23/08/2026 06:38

Because of my job my TT is full of these police chase videos, I also directly work with young boys who steal cars and mostly get away with it. One young person steals cars with his dad. I think giving publicity to the driving the wrong way/escape the police is going to sadly lead to more incidents. TT and Snapchat (where there are group chats for car stealing/joyriding) need to take some responsibility.
