Crash on A66 that killed two police officers and 5 others…

bookworm1982 · 22/08/2026 18:53

Am I correct that the other victims were 5 lads travelling in one car the wrong way up the motorway? EXACTLY the same as the 5 Irish lads who died a few days ago travelling the wrong way up a motorway too? Surely not twice in a week? Is there some sort of mental social media thing going on, telling kids to drive up the wrong way? Like a dare? Just cannot believe it happened once, let alone twice. Just devastating.

Heartbreaking.
God Speed to these two brave men.

Social media seems to be saying this image is AI generated and isn't actually of the police officers involved. Might be best not to continue to share it

God so predictable there's going to be a balloon release for the Passat passengers on the 25th. Kill some wildlife and livestock whilst you're done ruining people's lives intentionally. My Facebook investigation skills are too good. 💅

Flipping heck.

From bbc..

Around three minutes later, a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way on the A66 nearby collided with a marked police vehicle. PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough are confirmed to have died in the crash, along with the five occupants of the Volkswagen.

The BBC understands the officers had not been part of the pursuit, which was abandoned before the crash, and just happened to be in the area.

That’s so sad - sounds like they were in the wrong place at the wrong time 😔

The group of boys have since been linked to the so-called ‘lucky dip’ gang, a network of teenage joyriders first identified by the Gardaí last year, the Irish Independent reported.

The name derives from thebgang’s tendency to target areas at random.
‘Lucky dip’ is thought to comprise of some 60 members, with some aged as young as 14.
Some three hundred incidents were linked to the group in the first three months of this year alone.
Primarily operating by night, the group joyrides vehicles to generate footage for Tiktok and Instagram, following trend of dangerous social media stunts.
John Joe O’Connell, vice-president of the Garda Representative Association (GRA) said teenagers were trying to outdo each other’ with videos depicting dangerous acts such as wrong-way driving.

Those pursuing social media engagement are ‘playing Russian roulette with their lives and everyone else’s lives’, he warned.
He added: ‘There’s not one member of An Garda Síochána trained in pursuit – never mind in dealing with cars going down the wrong way.’
They had been travelling on the correct side of the road, driving to Dublin Airport, with images showing suitcases at the roadside.

Pictures from the scene show one vehicle on the grass to the side of the motorway and covered in red tarp, while the other lies in pieces on the road.
Detectives are now trying to piece together the moments prior to the crash; they believe the BMW may have been stolen.
Additionally, Gardaí want to establish whether videos were posted on social media before the fatal collision, as, ‘in some cases’, vehicles are being driven on the wrong side of motorways for online views and likes.

It’s things like this that make me think we should bring back national service or something along those lines, especially for the boys - so they can put all that teenage pent up energy into something useful.

Dregs if society? Really? Ok…..
Let’s just get one thing straight - it’s not liberal or kind or compassionate to react to the perpetrators of this crime with anything other than condemnation. Spending time feeling sorrow about their loss of life or their families undoubted grief only legitimises their behaviour. And they don’t get to have that.
if we make them martyrs or lost heroes we implicitly applaud this behaviour. We make it normal and tragic - and repeatable. And it’s not.
Two police officers have been murdered. The deaths of their murderers resolves the immediate situation but it’s how society reacts to this crime that will resolve the wider problem. We should not play this down, or talk meaninglessly about ‘misguided children’ or poor upbringings. Look it squarely in the face - our society is producing young men with no respect for their lives or those around them and no reasoning or judgement skills to make the most basic of choices.

Well said.

It’s not social media and it’s not a TikTok trend. It’s arse hole teens with shit parents.

I agree

Mistachio · 22/08/2026 23:30

RIP the two police officers. How dreadful.

As for the pieces of shit in the other car - no sympathy. Ditto for the parents of the 13 year old. They need to be charged as accessories. No excuse for not being able to keep your kid at home. You’re not telling me it’s the first time he did something like that.

HostaCentral · 22/08/2026 23:33

Another case just happened outside Guildford. They killed themselves, but three identical cars, all Seats, different colours, racing along a dual carriageway through a village. Police have arrested the other drivers.

I’d really love to know why people blame TikTok just out of instinct. I use TikTok and have never seen anything like this on there. Mine is mainly books ffs!

I wonder whether automatic incarceration in Young Offenders' Institution would make a difference for such offences (assuming that the offenders survived).

I should have put my edit above in a separate post - apologies.

The latest trend seems to be the modern equivalent of 'boy racers'. Perhaps the penalty should be a YOI plus a permanent ban from driving?

I've seen a few recent cases where teenagers have received a short ban from driving in spite of the fact that they're under 17 and shouldn't have been driving anyway. Maybe the penalty needs to be a permanent ban and the prison if they're caught driving again?

The problem with young offenders prisons is the same problem that adult prisons have, there is no space, society is breaking down at a rapid speed, the lack of capacity in prisons is causing a revolving door system, lack of punishments encourages these little thugs, they know they’ll get a heavily suspended sentence and early release.
There is no deterrent for them.

I’ve seen posts about two balloon releases (well one being a balooon release as they can’t spell) for two of the individuals. I have found a name of a third individual but no balloon releases for him as yet

edited to add - scrub that he’s got one organised too 🙄

I’m from Teesside and feel terrible that two brave Police officers have lost their lives because of these scumbags. Little horrors of human beings who make life miserable for decent people.

Do any other Teessiders know if this has been linked to the travellers site at South Bank? It was my first thought when I heard the location of the collision, after what happened in Ireland last week.

My heart goes out to the families and friends of PC Clough & PC Blades. And to the wider policing and emergency services family.

@MaidOfSteel also local here - can’t it take my mind off it at all. I’ve seen a few pics of the alleged Passat occupants, all have been young men, one with profile pic of him in a car with a bally on 😕 I don’t know if directly linked to the site but a couple of them had pics in caravans/caravans in background to I think there may be a traveller link

The funeral for one of the five lads involved in the crash in Dublin today was crazy, it was so over the top, extravagant, the displays took over a huge chunk of the graveyard. It would have undoubtedly cost 1000’s of euro.. I think it was one of the biggest displays that I have ever seen for a funeral. Meanwhile two of the three women they hit are gravely ill.

The bigger the shit, the more lavish the funeral.

Children. Doing stupid child things. All dead.

But yeah, fuck em. Yay for the gene pool though!

Child things?? How is being in a stolen vehicle speeding on the wrong side of the road child things? We aren’t talking about nicking a chocolate bar here, let’s call it what it is, shitty parents raising shitty kids

SwirlyGates · 22/08/2026 23:54

Some time ago I watched one of those police documentaries, where people (mostly teen boys or young men) engage in dangerous, criminal, or reckless behaviour behind the wheel - often life-threatening for them, the police, or bystanders. It was both upsetting and infuriating to see the sentences for the ones who were caught. Mostly nothing. Often a suspended sentence. And then they escalate.

We don't know anything about these boys yet, but the ones in Ireland had a string of nasty and dangerous offences behind them. Why were they free to drive on the road in the middle of the night? why weren't they already locked up?
