Stopping the boats is easy...

All we have to do is abandon the ECHR, the Refugee Convention, the UN, the G7, NATO and the WTO. Then we can break maritime law and start sinking the boats. Obviously we'd have to proscribe the RNLI and change the job description of the coast guard to encourage people who want to sink boats to sign up. The fishermen will be fine.
Once we start with this deterrent we can start kicking out other undesirables. I'd start with the students. Coming over here using our universities as a gateway to benefits street. So we ban them, no more student visas. We might see a few universities close but no great loss, you learn more in the school of life.
After that take away access to ALL benefits for anyone not born here. Don't care if you've always worked and paid your taxes you're not ENGERLISH so less Dr Khalid more Dr Callum.
Obviously once we start making Britain Great again there may be a couple of teensy issues. Food might cost a lot more because the lefty EU might not want to trade with a nation that wants to isolate itself and kill innocent people. It'll be fine because there will be 100% employment because instead of benefits you'll have to do your 60 hours on the food farm to earn your pound credits.
Family will be legally obliged to look after any living relative as there won't be anyone left to do it because we deported them all. And obviously the NHS was full of loony lefties who went round caring for people instead of focusing on what really mattered, which is profit.
They're just a couple of the benefits of stopping the boats, because who cares about the bigger picture or unintended consequences eh?
Giving up our place on the world stage is a small price to pay for stopping a handful of people coming from countries we benefited from or bombed isn't it?

Ceuta is an unusual case for the EU though because it's not in the Schengen area and is one of only two EU territories to have a land border with an African nation.

But it shows that the EU are divided by immigration which was the OP argument. That everything is Rosie in Europe..

Yeh it’s really not, even with the new pact, and not just the Ceuta event

Fine...but if you are in France (for the thousandth time) why ain't you claiming asylum there? Why come here risking your life , spending thousands?

perhaps they speak English, not french

perhaps they have family here already

we are an island nation. There is literally no of getting here without passing through a “safe” country first. Does that mean we shouldn’t take any refugees?

Menopausalsourpuss · Yesterday 00:26

Yes! Cos they're not refugees. Even if they were we shouldn't take a load of unknown males who've passed through umpteen countries. Just making me so angry now I have to stop reading about it.

Then why are they traveling to the UK? I refer to my previous answer...belief they will get Benefits/housing etc.

Why aren't they all coming here then?

And why shouldn't we take any, when other countries do? What makes us exempt?

And their mates tell them they can easily get jobs working for Uber and other delivery services lives in cheap rooms without any checks.or float into many other black ecconomy grey areas and work.
Or if claim aslyum they get housed and fed ?

It's obvously very easy to get in with a whole range of problems ,criminal records ,mental illness and so on .

I didn't say we shouldn't take refugees...i don't want us taking economic migrants.

So you've repeated the old mantra. The only reasons given by those who support unfettered migration to the uk:

"They might speak English "
"They might have family here already "

Not really convincing reasons to allow people into the country. As I have said i speak a little French I doubt they'll give me asylum.

But you've dodged my question. They are in a safe country why are so many people trying to get to Britain?

We're building 70,000 council houses. Thats enough for 4 years migrants, if you just take the figure year to date as of last week.

Because

A) we are over populated anyway
B) I another saying we shouldn't take genuine refugees, but the unfettered open boarder is letting in economic migrants which is actually detrimental to their home country
C) Where are all the women, the old, the sick...actual refugees. Not economic migrants
D) Cultural damage. Military Culturalism has failed, we've ended up with ghettos and issues like the grooming gangs. Allowing in huge numbers with completely different Cultural values is dangerous.
E) The nhs, education system, housing system are creaking at the seems. We have approx 2 million out of work already...we need to build 300,000 a year...where are they going to go?

Brazillas · Yesterday 08:39

If I was stuck in France.. I'd make an attempt to learn french..lots of free online guides

FatEndoftheWedge · Yesterday 08:47

Putin and Russia are helping the gangs to money lanuder and destabilise us as well.
Putin has his eyes on us right now and wants to attack and punish us in some way for supplying stuff to Ukraine. They said it be through a third actor.
The set up we currently have all feeds back to Putin.

France is one of the most beautiful and culturally gorgeous countries in the world !
Being "stuck " there ! We all go there on holiday
My goodness it's also huge ....once we leave blighty with it's narrow crammed motorways and get over to Calais it's empty ! Empty rolling roads ! Endless fields and space !

Across the world, immigrants work the sht jobs that locals won't. Get your kids being a hospital porter or cleaner, or don't complain that immigrants are doing it.
You do realise that before the boats they were coming on lorries instead. The governments are cracking down on thhe traffjckers and its working, actually. The circumstances that are driving people here have got worse not better, another solution has to be found if you want to reduce migration.
Hardly any migrants reach the UK compared to those who settle in all of the many countries they travel through to get here.
In fact
A common metric for comparing immediate pressure on a system is the number of new asylum applications lodged per head of population. 1]

  • The UK Ranks 17th: In terms of application intake relative to population size, the UK ranks 17th in Europe. The UK receives roughly 14 applications per 10,000 people, compared to an EU-wide average of 18 applications per 10,000 people

We spend more per person applying.

Our policies aren’t anything like Denmark’s. In Denmark refugee status is temporary and reviewed regularly. If your home country is considered safe, your refugee status is revoked. Failed asylum seekers are also transferred to detention facilities for deportation. The Danish government also did extensive social media campaigns across Africa and Arab nations to publicise their new policies. As a result, Denmark granted asylum to only 864 people in 2024 vs 39,616 people in the UK.

The biggest of these is the fact that Denmark grants only temporary refugee status now, with a regular assessment as to whether those granted (temporary) asylum can be safely returned.

Guess what? Starmer and Mahmood brought in the same policy.

What do you mean?

Yes, the UK spends significantly more per asylum seeker than any other G7 nation.
Independent data shows that the UK is a major outlier among advanced economies. The UK spends an average of $25,600 (~£20,000) per refugee and asylum seeker using its Official Development Assistance (ODA) tracking system. This is more than two and a half times higher than the next highest G7 nation

How much of this is on inflated shelter contracts with private companies?

Whatever we are taking at the moment is very clealry far far too much ? We have a prison crisis and are realising dangeous men back into the community and we have a housing crisis across many fronts .

FatEndoftheWedge · Yesterday 09:22

As far as small jobs go we also have a neet crisis I can't see how accepting all these men helps us or forfills any purposeful support to genuine assluym seekers and the " vulnerable ?

You’d think so, but unfortunately that makes us racist because ‘white men rape too’.

I have so much contempt for people trying to shut down conversation by spouting this.

The problem is that we need a way to separate the wheat from the chaff whilst adhering to our UN obligations. What do you, what does anyone, suggest?

Some who are extolling the Australian system may have forgotten that the Supreme Court unanimously ruled against the plan offshoring to Rwanda in 2023. HMG had failed to interest a more humane government in doing this dirty work.

You’re forgetting the legislation that came after. Have a look at that.
