To not visit my very elderly grandad?

HarveytheWhale · 22/08/2026 09:38

Potted history: my grandad is the father of my dad, who was completely absent from my life til my late teens, then broke my heart by moving hundreds of miles away just when we were connecting and starting a relationship. There was a lot more to it than that, including him being aloof and hurtful in things he said sometimes. I haven’t spoken to him in years. I don’t have contact with my mum or that side of my family due to abuse of every single kind when I was a child.

So. My grandad and I have maintained some kind of contact over the years- letters and cards here and there, emails, and meet ups a few times. He is now in an elderly people’s home about an hour from me. I’ve gone up there twice to visit but it takes me a lot of psyching myself up to be able to go. His side of the family, all his children and my cousins and aunts etc are all really close, and there’s photos of them around his place and it devastates me that I’m the odd one out who never got to have that. He’s fine to talk to but the fact that I have no contact with his son makes me feel awkward (despite him always being respectful of it). My aunt lives around the corner from him and she blows hot and cold with me. I saw her a year ago and she was all keen to meet up again but then nothing. The whole situation is just so wrought with emotion that I find dipping my toe in that family really hard.

because he is so old now (90s) and is something of a ticking time bomb due to a health issue, I keep feeling this urgency to go and visit, but then I get really anxious and can’t find it in me to go. It’s stressing me out.

Any advice would be very welcome.

No don’t go
Best for you
and I doubt he’d be bothered whether you go or don’t go

NeverKnowinglyUnderstated · 22/08/2026 09:40

Ask yourself honestly how you'd feel if he died without you having seen him again, and there's your answer.

Abra1t · 22/08/2026 09:41

I'd go. It will mean a lot to him. When the inevitable happens, you will feel glad that you did this. You don't have any beef with him, I think, if I've interpreted you rightly.

Homemerge · 22/08/2026 09:43

Is there any photos up of you in his room?

I wouldn’t go OP. It’s causing you a lot of stress, you have to protect yourself first.

It sounds like he has a close family and lots of visitors. You don’t have a “duty” to visit in the same way that you might if he has been an involved granddad figure your whole life.

No

I didn’t think so

Don’t go
I doubt he’ll be particularly fussed either way and will be better for you

How can you possibly know whether he'd be bothered?! Awful and quite hurtful advice. The OP has obviously been through a lot of trauma, the last thing she needs is a complete stranger telling her that her grandfather doesn't care about her when you have zero evidence of this. Think before you post.

Nimblethimble · 22/08/2026 11:30

I think you should go.

You don't want to regret things in life and in my experience, you regret more the things you didn't do than the things you did.

I think this advice is the best. I am in a similar situation with my Dad who has dementia. Only he is on the other side of the country. I really should maintain more contact but it is so hard for me to do because his partner blocks me. However if he died tomorrow I would feel guilty if I hadn't. I am planning to go and see him but for lots of reasons I keep putting it off.

Follow your heart.

ThatWasAFunDay · 22/08/2026 11:59

There is no point thinking about this as there isn’t a correct answer. He may or may not care if you go and you may or may not regret going and you may or may not regret NOT going. It’s impossible for anyone on Mumsnet to know. You don’t need to justify whatever decision you make to anyone even to yourself.

Whats pointless is agonising about it.

sophiasnail · 22/08/2026 12:00

In the long run, I think you'd feel worse if you didn't go and then wished you had rather than the other way round.

ginasevern · 22/08/2026 12:07

I'm quite old now and I can guarantee it's the things you haven't done in life that you regret the most. Does your grandad enjoy your visits (as much as he can in his state of health)? From what you say, he won't be around much longer so although I truly understand your anger and sadness, I think it would be good to continue the visits.

That's bloody harsh. How do you know how he'd feel?

Have you talked this dilemma through with your grandad ? Is he coherent enough for this type of conversation ? It maybe that talking to him would help

EnormousGinplease · 22/08/2026 12:19

And if it helps re: The photo. I have never seen a photo of me at my mother's house. There's her, her husband, my brother and my children.

Has he got any photos of you. Would you like a photo of you together to remember him in the future.

I've got 4 kids and 8 GC. I rotate photos but if they come unexpectedly I worry if there doesn't happen to be one of them in display. Sometimes I think it would be better to just take them all down. I've seen one DIL checking to see her child's photo.

No she didn't. OP said there are no photo of her in his room. At that point no one had asked if she (or her awful father) had given her grandad any photos of her. It's relevant.

She said he hasn't got any of her on display in his room and someone suggested that indicated he wouldn't be fussed if she didn't visit. I wondered if the reason is that hasn't got any to display.

Oh yes, sorry, my mistake.

Minasama · 22/08/2026 12:26

Do the right thing and go see the old man. He won’t be here for much longer and presumably he did right by you or you wouldn’t have this relationship.

One hour of visit won’t kill you. When he dies you will have peace. Feeling guilty after he died because you didn’t do the right thing will stay with you for years.
