Asking on behalf of DD who is expecting. What are in your view the worst girl and boy names. for me they are the made up ones like Nevaeh and Jayden

Teddy is sometimes for Theodore too, like Roosevelt - and in fact Teddy bears were named Teddy after Theodore Roosevelt, so there is a strong tradition of Theodores as well as Edwards being Teddy.

So many "Jack Daniels" around.
I have encountered many over the years.
It's not a name combination that tends to come with pleasant surprises.

Jack in general is fine; it's just that combination and mentality of naming a baby/ person after spirits most commonly consumed when a messy night out gains momentum not being a particularly great omen for child raising.

Either made-up ones like Cheraine or names that I'd associate with a great aunt from the early 1900s like Ethel or Ada or Florence.

And Anglo-Saxon. Not sure I want a grandson called Aethelred ;)

I wanted to call our son Barnaby. DH just rolled his eyes.

It is as long as people know how to pronounce it!

I know a Barnaby and à Barney. Tbh , they seem like nineties names that havent aged well, like Chloe and Rosie.

Boys called Alfie, Freddy etc will surely be called Alf or Fred when they’re grown up. So that’s fine.

I love Persephone. Admittedly I know a lovely spaniel called Persephone nn Percy.

I also love Kit...

I agree that too many people name their babies without remembering that they are going to grow up to be adults. What suited a baby won't suit a teen or a 30 something or a 70 something, You need to give a child a name for life.

I really can't imagine a Great Aunt Kylie, for example. And conversely I can imagine a Great Aunt Agatha (think Poldark) but imagine a 2 year old called Agatha!

And while not awful, I think you are putting massive pressure on your child if you call them Success!

Fortunately for Success Eduan, she's a great athlete!

Names are very personal, so it shouldn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Personally, I don't like diminutives as official names - Archie, Teddy etc. I'm also not a fan of names that have until very recently been seen as old fashioned - Alfie, Violet, etc. On the other hand I don't like trendy modern names. My daughters both have names that are classic but not old fashioned, and worked for them when they were babies as well as they do now they're young adults, and won't seem out of place when they're old.

I don't personally like unisex names for girls or names that can be surnames. I have two nieces who have unisex names that are also names that are sometimes surnames. Obviously I wouldn't have chosen those names, but they are their names and I love them regardless of their names!

There are hardly any names for which I have a really strong dislike that I can't get over. And the ones that I do are almost all female names that are hardly ever used:

Gertrude, Agatha, Ethel, Dorcas, Bertha, Ermentrude, Prudence
Bruce, Wayne

I dont think its nice to mock peoples names. So be kind.

The most important thing is to make sure that when said together with the surname it sounds ok. Try saying the names fast, slow, check is there any way it could be misconstrued. Check what the initials spell etc.

I know a child who's name is absolutely fine, but together with her surname does sound rude. Obviously I won't say what it is, that's not fair. Just be aware that can happen.

Olivia and Amelia. I teach a Yr7 class with 5 of each, and am very depressed to to learn that they're still the top 2 most popular baby names so I'll be teaching multiple Os and As for at least the next 11 years!

I don’t like any that are obviously from a popular show etc like Kalessi, but other than that the ones I’ve done a double take at are unfortunate when combined with the surnames or have unfortunate associations. There was an Isis in DS’s primary school class, I’ll admit I wondered what the parents were thinking before I did the maths and realised she would’ve been named before anyone had heard of the terror group. Similarly a friend who had her kids a while before I did called her DD Alexa ( she’s now an adult and goes by Ali).

That doesn’t really shock me. Barry and Gary are Grandad names, Barry would also be Great Grandad or named after their own Dads or Uncles, so could be name sakes. Like wise if met a little Stacey for example I’d assume and ask if she was named after anyone eg Nan or Auntie
