Rise in male posters…

loverrrr · 22/08/2026 08:02

Ive been on mumsnet about 6 years now & over the last 6 months or so Ive really noticed a massive rise in male posters, or at least posters who call out that they are male.
Has anyone else noticed this & does anyone have an opinion to discuss?
My opinion is probably that I would prefer this to be a female only site & I usually skip over any posters or responses that are obviously male. I understand I dont own the site though, and anyone is free to post!

I'm always surprised how many posters on Mumsnet aren't parents, or wanting to be parents tbh. There was a thread the other day about why would you bother having children and many posters were saying they definitely didn't want children - a valid choice, but what are you doing on Mumsnet?

Edited

Oh get over yourself.
The vast majority of threads on here have nothing to do with parenting and you know it.
Aside from general life, hobbies and politics, they have to do with relationships, breast cancer, ovarian cancer, hysterectomies, periods, menopause, abortion, contraception and an assortment of other female-centred topics you dont need to be a "mummy" to know about

Completely disagree, I think it’s entirely possible to identify male posters through writing style. You can often tell when they’re not the age they say they are either. Obviously not allowed to troll hunt on MN, but I’m allowed to think what I want.

No, you just think it's possible. Unless you have some secret way to identify every single poster in real life, you have no clue whether someone on here is male or female.

I haven't particularly noticed a rise in posters who state they are male (been here about 10 years myself).

Sometimes male posters can be helpful, sometimes not - like any posters.

It's annoying when they barge onto threads with their own 'man here!' fanfare as if that made their perspective more important, but they're not all like that. They don't always announce their sex, and I only know because I recognise a username from previous threads where it was relevant and mentioned.

It's unrealistic to make the site female only, attempts to police it would compromise anonymity.

I don’t think that’s why they say man here. I think they’re just being transparent they’re a man as people might want to know it’s from a male perspective

Uricon2 · 22/08/2026 12:35

There are some men on here who just join in the general discussion and debate, don't mansplain and are IMO fine. Others, not so much but I do think they get called out on thread quite a lot of the time, as they should be. I think its quite possible there are some posters who have never "self declared" and noone knows if they are male or female.

Not that it would be possible to enforce, but against any sort of blanket ban on men as I'm childless and part of another group that some seem to think shouldn't be here, possibly more so if the 'by parents for parents' is applied. What matters at the end of the day is good intent and posting in a civil way, whoever is writing.

OntheroadtoHaggerston · 22/08/2026 13:06

@LavenderSweetPea you've tried to prove a point on a post that has nothing to do with parenting. So by your logic should you only stick to posting on threads directly relating to parenting, in which case why are you posting on this one?

Yes, as I said I disagree with the poster (I didn’t say they were wrong) I think it’s entirely possible to infer someone’s sex and age by the way they talk/write. That is my opinion.

category12 · 22/08/2026 13:21

I love when someone announces "man here!" and 'splains us some things like we've never heard a male perspective in our lives. 😂

But normal blokes posting without the fanfare is fine by me.

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · 22/08/2026 13:22

I don't mind the normal posters but the whiny ones who post in Relationships do my head in.

There is also a really really odd man who posts. He seems to resent women because he can't get a girlfriend and thinks that all men are like him.

Globules · 22/08/2026 13:28

CuriousKangaroo · 22/08/2026 11:59

Fair enough that that is your view. And it may well be correct for some of them.

My observations were (obviously) generalisations. For some male posters “man here” is simply to denote they are providing their own male perspective as you say - but the ones who are respectful usually say so in a politer way. Surely you have noticed the number of posts which start like that going on to say something in an overly authoritative way as though their opinion is the irrefutable and is wholly dismissive of other PP’s views? It’s a special type of patriarchal arrogance that shines through on some of the posts and frankly rarely even needs the “man here!” declaration! They are the ones who I am complaining about.

I'll be honest, I haven't.

But I stop reading posts halfway through, male or female, if it becomes overly authoritative as though their opinion is the irrefutable and is wholly dismissive of other PP’s views.

Many many women on MN do this. They annoy the heck out of me!

If you find me another forum, I'll move my childless self off over there!

Tattlelife isn't great and reddit is rubbish.

I also don't believe that having children helps a person form opinions!

summater · 22/08/2026 20:45

I'm here and my child is mid 30s so I'm hardly going to want parenting advice, what age child do we need to post on here

Queenncat · 22/08/2026 20:55

Totally agree. Wish they'd all piss off.

I don't think men commenting is necessarily an issue.

The problems is with the ones that are only here to post misogynist posts and 'women are just as bad' comments when male violence and poor behaviour in general are discussed.

There seems to be a few trolls and pervs as well who are trying to sneak in posts about their 'kinks' lately.

Yeah that pisses me off. When a woman posts a thread about men, and the issues they have/have had with them, someone ALWAYS comes along before the thread is a dozen posts in, and starts banging on about how they know many women who are FAR worse. I just think 'bog off and start your own thread about all these AWFUL women you know then!' Hmm 'THIS thread is about shitty men!'

There were quite a few such people on a thread the other day saying how they know all these nasty bitter women. Didn't take to kindly to it when I said 'off you trot then! Start your own thread about all these women you allegedly know.' I'm 95% sure they were men.

There was a longish discussion about this on the FWR board, as to whether men should declare they are men in their user names or not, as a few were annoyed they'd assumed posters were female and so a few of the chaps amended their user names to make it clearer they were men.

But there are always plenty of women on threads about this who insist that "You can always tell that they're men" and they're all the same etc.!

Maybe it's very different on the Sex forum? I never go on there, so I wouldn't know.

I do think that there are some female posters who show such unbridled hatred of men, and use such dehumanising language, that their mindsets remind me exactly of the incels that they (quite rightly) complain about. Not just addressing widespread problems caused by men in society, but quite blatantly despising anybody who happens to be of the male sex.

DramaAlpaca · 22/08/2026 21:54

I've been on here about 15 years and haven't noticed a recent increase in male posters. Maybe I'm not being observant enough. I've no problem with men being on here on the whole. Apart from the pervy ones who infest the Sex topic - urrgh.

Women not liking men is not the same as incels.

Dragonflyspeeding · 22/08/2026 21:58

I agree OP.
I skip over the posts when I'm aware they are written by men.
I have no interest in what they have to say on Mumsnet and would prefer this to be a women's only board.

ThatJadeLion · 22/08/2026 21:58

It's Mumsnet not Dadsnet or Parentsnet. Half of them are creepy (my own personal view before someone jumps down my throat). I'm sure the other half are perfectly fine. But it would be nice to have a space for women only ... hence the name MUMSnet.

Same! And I found the same issues as you-I go on tattle a bit, and reddit but I always assume reddit is full of people a fair bit younger than me and unless you're on a specific UK sub it's American/international. I'd love other forum suggestions for UK women-are there any?

Hellohelga · 22/08/2026 22:03

I think it’s hilarious any men want to be on MN. I just find them irrelevant.

intsjl26 · 22/08/2026 22:03

Reddit is a misogynistic cesspit. I’m more than happy for any woman to be here, mum or not, I don’t really see this as a parent site, I see it as a female space first and foremost.

Women not liking men is not the same as incels.

Of course that isn't; but on threads like the recent one, posters were going way beyond 'not liking' men.

One poster opened that it would be better if all men were exterminated - although granted that post was deleted; but again, the dehumanising language was disturbing in a number of posts that were left to stand.

Be honest: if you saw a thread online where a group of men were saying that all women are shit, useless for anything, that the world would be much better if every one of them were killed... would you brush it off as them 'just not liking women'?

poachy · 22/08/2026 22:11

Stormyrose · 22/08/2026 08:15

Doesn’t bother me and impossible to make this a female only site, how on earth would they confirm that,

I’m sure someone else has said it but in case not, look up Sall Grover’s case in Australia - tickle v giggle - it is possible via software to detect women but some men will still force their way in…
