To think Meghan Markle has every right to worry about her security?

I’m not a monarchist and haven’t really taken much notice of the whole saga, but obviously do know the main points.

However, the comments across Mumsnet and multiple newspapers and websites are absolutely insane and unhinged. People who don’t know them insisting she’s leaving Harry and the kids, is controlling him, that they’re skint and tge
kids will have to go to state school if Charles doesn’t pay, people saying they hope a random stranger sees her and gives her ‘some home truths’.

It is absolutely crackers and I worry about the sanity of the people who seem to really believe they know them.

Harry does have protection when he travels and he's in the UK because he pays for it, but there not allowed to carry firearms or recieve intelligent data, perhaps the better question is why does he need it when the UK should be a safe place.

No, this is a common misunderstanding. When he comes to the UK, as long as he gives four weeks’ notice of his visit, Harry gets the taxpayer funded security considered appropriate by RAVEC based on the current threat level, intelligence, what he is doing and so on. Any additional security he feels is necessary on top of that, he pays for himself.

It must be incredibly frightening bringing your young children into the country, knowing there have been credible threats to their safety and feeling like those aren't being taken seriously because people dislike their parents. I'd be terrified.

Which other Cambridge professors have rung such a tale of lies? Whose appointment was so widely celebrated through the pres? Who appeared so regularly on the BBC? Whose work was so poor quality? Did they also shout ‘racism’ when questioned about their work? Threaten legal action? Try to get those asking questions a criminal record?

I think what Ukisgaslit is saying, and I very much agree, is that there are hundreds of academics who are not good at their job, who have exaggerated their cvs, and plagiarised others. That’s obviously not good but bc they are white, privileged men, they aren’t subject to the same scrutiny or media focus.

Tess Dunlop said something similar on LBC. She said that getting a PhD nowadays is virtually impossible without the (middle class) support of someone you know. And if you are black or working class and don’t know anyone without the right connections, it’s a hundred times more difficult. But those fundamental inequalities are accepted as normal and rarely addressed. The tabloids certainly don’t shout about it!

And let’s not forget that Cambridge wouldn’t have needed.to showcase Jason Arday to the degree they did, if they had established and appointed a fair representation of racially diverse and working class academics in the first place. But the British education system and British academia do not work that way.

Pushingback · 21/08/2026 10:19

The woman is a fantasist.

Both of them are pathetic.

Made a choice to be non working royals, fair enough, then used their royal titles to get work, work dried up because they are dull and boring and they didn’t have access to the royal family which is what most of the public want.

Back with their tails between their legs.

Overall, embarrassing.

Interesting isn't it that RAVEC has 3 senior courtiers from the Palace on its committee.
And that four week point will be moot when he moves here.

Personally I think the family should get security, what form that will take, and how much security is another matter.

FriendlyGreenAlien · 21/08/2026 10:20

I’ve long felt that if Harry hadn’t met Meghan he might have settled into country gentleman life with a Sloane Ranger wife. He seemed to like the hunting and partying lifestyle that titled second sons traditionally enjoyed.

Maybe this is an opportunity to give that a try and see if there really is an incompatibility between them based on the type of life they want to lead or whether they can make it work in one location or another.

I cannot understand the unhinged vitriol aimed at her/them but I can see why people say they don’t seem well suited to each other.

FillTheGoldenCupWithRoses · 21/08/2026 10:20

I’d assume his dad has offered to fund proper security and in balance they’ve decided that they need it too much to stay no.

I doubt they actually want to come back.

But I mostly just feel sorry for them all. They just want to be a family like any other.

Of which RAVEC can say he doesn't need it, also the King's personal aid sits on RAVEC and is known for not wanting them to reconcile and has since announced his retirement after the July meeting. Now they are due back full time and with Clive Alderton leaving there security will have to be reconsidered which possibly does make Harry feel safer about returning.

Most of them commercially exploit their royaldom. Apart from Charles and his heir.

Yep and they don’t have to because they have the income from the Duchies which are huge commercial enterprises each making circa £20 million profit a year.

As I said it was one comment out of a lot of comments yesterday, the point of this thread is OP is suggesting that there has been so many unhinged comments.

Yes, but out of all those comments it was the one you highlighted as being particularly “unhinged” (you said something like “someone even suggested William should remove the children’s titles”). If that is one of the examples of “unhinged” comments made by posters on MN, I still don’t understand how online comments like this translate into a credible threat of harm to Harry, Meghan or their children.

They're on the committee because they have to share royal diaries in order to coordinate appropriate security.
It's not a conspiracy. Nobody wants harm to come to anyone, that's the whole point of RAVEC.

I can entirely understand the worry when you read so many people who will never, ever meet them frothing at the mouth in anger just because she exists.

Where are you reading that?

Just read the comments in this section. Properly. People are not even subtle in their hatred of her.

simpsonthecat · 21/08/2026 10:26

They will have input as to what sort of security and how much. They aren't out there with a mic and a gun zipping along on a motorbike beside a car!

Don't forget Clive Alderton whose was a part of RAVEC, who not only clashed with Harry but also advised against a reconciliation to the King has announced he's retiring after the July meeting. But yes the four weeks is now a moot point.

I do wonder if some decisions made were designed to make it as awkward as possible for Harry to visit. If so Harry has pulled a blinder by announcing he's back full time.

You must have a sentimental view of what families are like.

I agree. And I think 4 weeks notice was ridiculous.

Charles has every right to connect with his son again and if that's the reason Clive Alderton left, good riddance to him.

Or she was very stupid

Yes, I assume that when he moves here the current bespoke arrangement, including the notice requirements, will change to reflect the change in circumstances. That doesn’t negate the fact that your initial characterisation of the current security arrangements was inaccurate and misleading.

RAVEC is an independent body with plenty of experience assessing the appropriate level of security for royals and others. This was made clear when it came out during one of Harry’s court cases that the late Queen had asked RAVEC for a certain level of security for Harry and was told, politely, that it was nothing to do with her and she could not influence the decision.

No, they deal with security.
Some of this is fanciful.
Security is taken very seriously with the Met Special Protection, MI5 and MI6 and counter terror intelligence involved. It's not about "like" or "dislike" it's about keeping people as safe as possible without squandering taxpayers' money.
Nothing anti Sussex about it.

Why does it have the Kings personal aid on it if it's a completely independent body?

The four weeks’ notice was in place to ensure compliance with employment law in case shift changes, cancelled leave etc. for the personnel providing the security are necessary to ensure the appropriate level of protection can be given. Not ridiculous at all.

Ukisgaslit · 21/08/2026 10:35

@aCatCalledFawkes

Exactly.

Reps of William and Charles on the committee.
There is a ‘sub committee’ relating to anything Windsor related . No vote . Decisions are made by ‘consensus’ . Hence plausible deniability when the Windsors make it known what should be done . A word in an ear .

In all fairness Zara’s children started off at the local state primary, with no security.

Thank you. Not quite a cross post, but largely a point I was trying to make.
Harry misunderstands how security works, and his personal attitude has meant some misinformation about the whole process.
