To think Meghan Markle has every right to worry about her security?

I’m not a monarchist and haven’t really taken much notice of the whole saga, but obviously do know the main points.

However, the comments across Mumsnet and multiple newspapers and websites are absolutely insane and unhinged. People who don’t know them insisting she’s leaving Harry and the kids, is controlling him, that they’re skint and tge
kids will have to go to state school if Charles doesn’t pay, people saying they hope a random stranger sees her and gives her ‘some home truths’.

It is absolutely crackers and I worry about the sanity of the people who seem to really believe they know them.

If there was a referendum tomorrow, I’d vote to abolish the monarchy. They’re way past their sell by date IMO. For loads of reasons.

But what you call “seeking the public’s attention” could also be characterised as “trying to regain some control of the narrative that is already there and in fact ever-present”.

There's a world of difference between character critique and physical threats.

I think the gap between those two things can be quite slim eg the murders of MPs Jo Cox and David Amess in 2016 and 2021 respectively, possibly Anne Wifdecombe too.

You may not be aware of any plots to harm MM and H, but Neil Basu, assistant head of the Met’s counter-terrorism unit when MM was in the UK , said that the couple faced awful, credible threats and that people had been jailed bc of them.

I think we have to be careful not to have another Diana situation on our hands and I don’t blame Harry for being worried about this.

Diana couldn’t escape press attention, tried to control it, was banished from the RF and ended up being deceived by Martin Bashir which led her to letting go of her PPOs.

She then was chased to her death by paps. And yes the driver was drunk and she should have worn a seat belt but she wouldn’t have been involved in a high speed chase in the first place had there been no paps in pursuit. They had tried to evade them and failed.

Some people were frustrated and contemptuous of Diana weren’t they and probably didn’t mean her any direct physical harm either? She was a divisive figure too.
But the truth is she came to harm and we are all guilty of consuming this endless nonsense that feeds the demand for yet more stories and commentary.

So yes, I think everyone needs to step back and calm down.

Thanks for your considered reply. I take your points, though I would point out that the examples you gave are of politically active people who stood for something.

H&M would be able to sink into aristocratic obscurity without difficulty. They'd just have to pick a lane and stay in it, as do the UK's other titled bods whom we only see at royal events and occasionally coming out of The Ivy. MM seems happiest doing a Gwyneth Paltrow - she was much more famous, yet now swans around the Cotswolds free of security guards, does her own shopping and so forth.

the Met’s counter-terrorism unit said that the couple faced awful, credible threats and that people had been jailed bc of them.

Goes to show our regular, taxpayer-funded security services work well, doesn't it.

I feel the media created and continue to encourage hatred for Harry and in particular Meghan and it makes me angry , she is blamed for being controlling , wearing expensive clothes, being a strong intelligent woman who tries to express her own opinion and for the most ridiculous things . I feel in the past the king has thrown them to the lions and hope in the future he speaks out against the press who spread hatred but I don’t think he has the balls!

Beesandhoney123 · Yesterday 00:54

MM will be able to avoid danger by going about her day without posting on social media where she is, where she will be etc. If you court publicity and the press, then the price is high for privacy and public opinions which might not always go your way.

But this ignores all the lies that have been told.
Its as if celebs forget about the internet and that it forgets nothing.

Yes, lots of people are annoyed (by her very existence), but I can’t imagine anyone wishing her genuine harm. Or even less, the children.

She’s going to be booed and heckled in public, but I’m sure that would be the extent of the ‘threat’.

That's insane.🤯

People should be entitled to go about their everyday lives without being booed or heckled. Even people you don't like.

mathanxiety · Yesterday 01:11

You're not at all unreasonable.

The level of seething hatred I've seen here toward her over the years has been very troubling.

I hope they bring seasoned security with them. Presumably the security situation has been assessed and plans are in place for every eventuality. I sincerely hope that is the case, because there are unhinged people out there (and here).

It's comments like this that she needs to worry about.

The hate for her is dripping off this comment. And I say that as a republican. The Royal family deserve no respect from MM or anyone else.

And in the same vein, SHE deserves no automatic respect.
Her conduct is the reason why people loathe her. Dim Harry is loathed for other reasons.
I shan’t be taking notice of either of them.

I think there is insane hatred against her.

I don’t like her. She is very unlikeable. Her instagram posts and tv show on homemaking was absolutely unauthentic. And she just stinks of someone who doesn’t listen to marketing and PR advice. Having works in this area, that grates my gears. But the woman hasn’t hurt anyone, the amount of hate she gets is absolutely insane.

If I was the subject of such vitriol abuse online. I’d be also concerned for my safety and that of my small children.

Do you not think she hurt those she accused of racism on the most public of stages, only for those allegations to be retracted and dismissed by her husband a couple of years later?

They weren’t dismissed. He didn’t see that specific incident of asking about her potential child’s skin colour as racism. She may have seen this as racism. He didn’t say that the incident didn’t happen. They had different perspectives on the meaning behind it.

There is clearly individuals who are racist or at best racially insensitive in the wider family. And obviously the institution of royalty itself has a history and structure deeply connected to racial inequality. So I think it’s viable that Megan experienced comments as racist while Harry did not.

Harry said they never said his family was racist.

Leave them to their chosen private life.

But Harry denied, in the interview with Tom Bradby, that they had ever accused the family of racism - he said it was all made up by the “British press”. He wasn’t saying “I don’t think the incident was racist but I can see why Meghan did”. Bradby’s face when he made that comment was a picture.

I wonder when she’s going to appear on Loose Women.

I agree OP - but a year or 2 ago any thread about Meghan would be 95% pure venom, the few I’ve read today have been far more balanced so perhaps the tide is turning? I hope so anyway, for her sake.

I really think they’re making a huge mistake moving back.

A year or two ago any thread about H and M was met with calls of racism against anyone that didn't support them.

But I do agree that given that they hate the country so much it is strange that they would decide to come back

moonraker0 · Yesterday 04:38

South Park nailed them. They created a drama over privacy then went on tv and wrote books about every aspect of their lives. If they really wanted privacy then they wouldn’t come back here, they’d stay where they are and live quietly and drama free. Give it two years and we’ll have another Oprah interview moaning about how horrible everyone has been again.

caringcarer · Yesterday 04:40

They will have to pay for their own security same as on US. Don't forget Harry caused a lot of their security issues by boasting about how many Taliban he killed on TV. Now they are at more risk from a Taliban threat because of it. Harry is rather dim and probably didn't even think thatigjt be a consequence but I think he put a big target on MM back as her face is well known. He also increased risk to his own DC but again he probably didn't think of that when he was boasting on TV. If I was his wife I'd be bloody furious with him for it.

Noodles1234 · Yesterday 06:00

I don’t blame them for leaving and carving out a new life, they were popular here. I think when they started flinging mud publicly about their family when his Grandad was dying and his Gran was probably also not well at this stage was the worst move they made, then selling all the family secrets . If that’s your only move it is not advisable and possibly they had bad advice or thought they had a good idea. The people they would have needed / wanted to befriend in US would have been wary, they could not be trusted. Obama and Co would not be able to ever trust them. Then add disparaging comments about their family when UK and its institutions won’t gather a lot of love. All the whike Princess Ann goes and opens another Library on a wet Wednesday afternoon many miles away from home and Kate / KS3 battles cancer and yet carries on. The word Grace springs to mind.
They are likely to be broke, a paper published their projected annual running costs and what they’d need to earn, they haven’t matched it plus he’s lost a few high profile court cases.

I don’t know them, but Harry still comes across a little immature, he was once loved by the public. Meghan, I don’t think her disparaging comments about the Uk in US have helped, again shame as at first she was very much welcomed. She has a drive to succeed (possibly at the expense of others / not a good reputation to work with). Part of me feels sorry for her, Harry can’t be an easy husband and I’m sometimes surprised they’re still together.

UK Taxpayer paying their security? We’ll thats up to RAVEC to decide, but the UK Taxpayer gets a rough end and when you hear people rubbishing and poking fun at you, you're hardly likely to be cock a hoop over precious funds being spent on a couple that possibly should be paying for at least a good portion of it. Much is possibly badly spent, but when we know about it that’s different. They’d do better funding it themselves and showing they’re not just here for the money. This would possibly start a recovery.

I genuinely don't think she's safe in this country and would worry about the lunatics that don't think she should be in the Royal Family.

I'll never forget those horrible, spiteful women ignoring her when she was thanking the crowds at the Queens funeral.

So why is she moving here?

So why is she moving here?

I think this is the crux of it. Why? Maybe we'll never know the truth. But seriously, imo....there must be some bad shit going on (marriage? money? need for more netflix/book fodder?) for her to (apparently) choose to LIVE here and bring the children here - to live!!

I don't believe that she's interested in C3 snd his poorly health

Maybe it'll all come out in the wash one day
