To think Meghan Markle has every right to worry about her security?

I’m not a monarchist and haven’t really taken much notice of the whole saga, but obviously do know the main points.

However, the comments across Mumsnet and multiple newspapers and websites are absolutely insane and unhinged. People who don’t know them insisting she’s leaving Harry and the kids, is controlling him, that they’re skint and tge
kids will have to go to state school if Charles doesn’t pay, people saying they hope a random stranger sees her and gives her ‘some home truths’.

It is absolutely crackers and I worry about the sanity of the people who seem to really believe they know them.

I totally agree OP, people are rabid in their dislike of her even though she makes no difference to their lives in any material way.

Laundrybasketfull · Yesterday 07:54

Morethanadecade · Yesterday 07:19

She’s come back to be in a play, hasn’t she? So that’s very public facing.

But why shouldn't she (if she is, I have no idea) what do you expect her to do? Hole up in her house for the rest of the days in the UK.

Binnyforthewin · Yesterday 07:56

They could easily have faded into the background with privacy if they had really wanted to. Instead they choose to release an attention seeking booking and sell their souls to Netflix.

It is the constant demand for privacy whilst seeking attention that seems so grating to me.

YANBU, a lot of comments about MM and Harry are deranged, I genuinely think a lot of people on this subject are mentally unwell.

WarriorN · Yesterday 07:59

converseandjeans · Yesterday 07:50

YANBU I’m not especially interested in the Royal Family but can’t fathom the interest in H&M.

Prince Andrew has behaved appallingly over the years & yet MM gets all the hate. In light of Ann Widdicombe I think Harry is right to worry. Don’t forget his Mum was chased by the paparazzi and lost her life when he was little. That would make anyone worry.

Totally this.

Absolutely agree with you. In my workplace we have a team of arounf 25, as part of a wider workplace of 200 ish people. Of the team I work in, we all like Harry and Megan, find it liberating they took themselves off when things were getting awful for them (the press releases and vitriol were hideous, I remember discussing it in the break room).

I don't know anyone in 'reality' that thinks badly of them but if you go online it's just pages and pages, endless comments of vitriol and hate. It's so far removed from when they are discussed in reality (my reality at least!)

I completely agree they need to be protected. Harry and his children are Royal by blood and his wife is an extension of that. It's not like they can walk into the local coffee shop and get a job, they will always have to function in the public eye in some capacity. What I've never understood is why people constantly bang on about them 'demanding privacy' when that wasn't the case, they just wanted more control over what was put out, which considering the hateful media onslaught of the British press, I 100% understand.

The level of unhinged comments on some of the posts here on Mumsnet is enough to show that they absolutely should be concerned about their security. The level of 'hate' posted online against them both is just unparalleled.

Teamrabbit · Yesterday 08:01

It’s absolutely bonkers they are coming back!

Did they leak it because the pair of them cannot stay out of headlines maybe they need more dosh from a new expose book or did the Palace leak it because they want Andrew out of the headlines a who knows…

They do remind me of that couple in a family who cause drama at every event and then complain they didn’t get invited to a family BBQ. They know no one’s likes them but want to go anyway so they can put the photos on Facebook 😂😂😂😂

Sartre · Yesterday 08:03

Agreed, it’s hardly like they can live a regular life without constant security and an element of worry. I’ve never understood the vitriol aimed at them tbh, I think they seem perfectly nice.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Yesterday 08:06

I think the monarchy is anachronistic and frankly ridiculous. However, it is the system that we have, and as far as I'm concerned, those who are born into the RF should have the right to protection for themselves and their families. Not because there is anything inherently special about them - there isn't. But because we, as a society, have chosen for some inexplicable reason to put this particular extended family on a pedestal, and none of the individual members are free to just walk away from the security risks that they inevitably face as a result of us giving their family this bizarrely elevated status. So yes, the taxpayer should pay to keep them safe, just like any other public figure that requires protection.

As for H&M, I think they've made some very stupid and misguided decisions but I also don't understand the level of hate and vitriol that is directed against them. They are just flawed human beings like the rest of us. Let them get on with their lives wherever they choose to do so - it doesn't affect me either way.

You make an interesting point re the hate being online and not reality .

It was a narrative started by the media ( fed by the royals in my opinion) because Harry leaving was a threat to the status quo
The daily posts on H and M are a form of addiction and if they reach 30 hate threads mumsnet really have a duty of care to set up a helpline . Joke!

@simpsonthecat I have also reported the odd post and they were not deleted.
Against my better judgment I have been posting in the royal boards to push back a bit ( I would vote to get rid of the Windsors tomorrow) . The fact that a recent thread was referring to something seen on GB news brought me to my senses . Good luck @simpsonthecat and other free thinkers who continue to venture there!

Stormyrose · Yesterday 08:17

Of course they should be worried about security, thays not specific to the uk. Their behaviour has been distasteful and dishonest. It doesn’t matter who it is in the public eye, you are going to attract loons if you do that, most celebs have security for them and their kids, and the ones who are disliked due to their behaviour or views have more more

it isn’t they are royal, or the fact they are coming to the uk, it’s the ridiculous attention seeking behaviour at the expense of others that’s the issue. And it’s constant. South Park nailed it. Albeit in a mocking way,

and it’s ridiculous to think Meghan was utterly clueless when she married Harry , two mins of googling would tell her what she needed to know. This wasn’t some teenage ingenue she was a mature woman who knew exactly what she was getting into and proactively wanted it,

what she didn’t know, is that she wouldn’t be number one. The star of the show. She thought she’d got the gig of her life, thought they could be a list in the USA, hang with a listers and lead the life of fame and fortune she’d always wanted, fullfil all her ambitions at once, and Harry encouraged that, he even said she was coming in to modernise the royal family, the man’s an idiot. And she desperately wanted that, so she’s not much smarter, common sense would tell you, she wasn’t going to be leading the royal family,

but the attention they got, the fanfare, deluded her into believing the hype.and so off they fucked to America to make their fortune. But with no skills. They cashed in on bad mouthing the royals, and it all came crashing down.

what we will see next is some form of pseudo royal behaviour as they try to work their way back in, they will visit as many heart tugging charities for the photos as they can. Try to be seen with the royals, as a way to try to bolster their reputation, and thus give them a new opportunity to make money, it’s just more half in half out attempts. Now they are trying it by stealth and proximity as all they have to sell is their royal connections.

Likeiloveyou · Yesterday 08:18

custardbonbon · Yesterday 07:25

Yes. However I don’t see why the tax payer should fund it unless they return to be working royals.

This is the crux of it.

Yes, if I had made myself and my family objects of ridicule and persistently pushed myself into the limelight and was very unpopular then I would consider myself a target and would seek security protection. I think MM probably does need security.

She and her husband can afford to pay for their security though. I absolutely do not want to be paying for it.

aCatCalledFawkes · Yesterday 08:20

I agree OP some if the posts are totally unhinged. I read one post yesterday suggesting that William will strip the children of their titles. WTF there 5&7, what have they done to anyone and what kind of uncle would that make him?

simpsonthecat · Yesterday 08:21

@Ukisgaslit And good luck to you too! I keep away from the long running thread, it's like an exclusive club where I will be treated like a fart in a lift 🤣 (and life's too short for a pile on)

krne · Yesterday 08:23

I absolutely think they should get protection paid for in the UK. Whether he is a working Royal or not, he is the King's son, therefore a high target.
I cannot fathom the hatred towards Meghan, the press pitted her against Catherine and made most of the country turn against her. When you look at similar stories of them both side by side, it's awful how the press portrayed her.
I think the views of people online are totally unhinged - she is making no difference to average Joe's life but everyone thinks she owes them something - she doesn't!

simpsonthecat · Yesterday 08:25

@Stormyrose I think you have bought into all this a little too much. You don't know what they expected or wanted and bear in mind we know about 1% of what goes on within the royal family. They have very clever PR doncha know.

I hope there is some pseudo royal behaviour to be honest. It might shake William up a bit and make him do more and work harder.

Let's hope H&M do lots of charity visits.

I agree OP, people are absolutely unhinged about them. The threads running yesterday were actually insane, it is pathetic how invested people are in them. I’d be fucking terrified.

If they are genuinely “fucking terrified” to come to the UK, as they have frequently claimed to be over the last six years, they don’t need to come back, do they? They have a gorgeous house in the US and apparently also a lovely place in Portugal where they can live free of security concerns if they wanted to be closer to the UK, family and so on.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · Yesterday 08:35

custardbonbon · Yesterday 07:25

Yes. However I don’t see why the tax payer should fund it unless they return to be working royals.

The thing is, they don't "earn" their royal status by being "working royals". It is conferred upon them by accident of their birth. As the king's son, Harry can't actually just walk away and choose to be a completely anonymous private citizen. We all know who he is and he will always remain a target because of who he is rather than what he does - working royal or not, he cannot opt out of being the king's son.

So, while I personally think the monarchy should be abolished, for as long as we still have it, the individuals who are at risk because of it deserve to have their security paid for by the taxpayer.

ViciousCurrentBun · Yesterday 08:35

I have always been neutral about the Royal Family but she was disrespectful to the Queen. That just seemed very wrong. I can imagine anyone who had a real fondness would have been outraged.

There is no one quite like The Queen in the RF anymore.

People tend to point towards racism, honestly I think it xenophobia and it’s because she is American.

This is mental. Of course it should be safe for him to return to his home country and be able to connect with the charities he works with and his work for the invictus games. He shouldn't have to live in exile.

You understand he chose to leave, right, and he’s no more at risk in the uk than anywhere else. It’s not like he was exiled, he chose to leave, then did interviews and wrote a book to tell everyone just how horrible his family was and how much of a victim he was.

Grumpyeeyore · Yesterday 08:45

Any royal kid shoved into the media glare should get paid protection. It would be a huge embarrassment to the UK if a terrorist did manage to take out a member of the Royal family especially one as high profile as H. And while he hasn’t helped himself he was made high profile by the press and his parents long before he met M. The same is true for Williams kids they allow the press to photograph them and those kids will have a target on them now and have their lives covered by the press whether they end up being working royals or not. You can’t have it both ways you can’t put your kids in the media to promote your brand and then refuse to pay to protect them as adults.

Missey85 · Yesterday 08:46

FairViewRosie25 · 20/08/2026 22:14

I don’t really like her but she and the Children need some protection . Harry was paying privately in the States why can’t he do that here?

I'm guessing his expecting your tax dollars will cover it 😂 who cares where they live if he wants security HE can pay for it why should your taxes have to cover it there not even UK citizens he only remembers his from there when he wants something

I agree. I think people want them to have a face transplant like John Travolta in that film, and go and live in the Amazon jungle. But then what would certain people talk about? 🤣

Harry and Meghan are quite entitled to come back here and live their lives with their children, in whatever form that takes. He is connected with different charities here like WellChild that he has been actively involved with for 20 years. And Scotty's Little Soldiers, about 10 years I think.

He has many ties over here, good for them, I worry about security and the media but let's hope
