To think Meghan Markle has every right to worry about her security?

I’m not a monarchist and haven’t really taken much notice of the whole saga, but obviously do know the main points.

However, the comments across Mumsnet and multiple newspapers and websites are absolutely insane and unhinged. People who don’t know them insisting she’s leaving Harry and the kids, is controlling him, that they’re skint and tge
kids will have to go to state school if Charles doesn’t pay, people saying they hope a random stranger sees her and gives her ‘some home truths’.

It is absolutely crackers and I worry about the sanity of the people who seem to really believe they know them.

You don’t know her. You have no idea what went on.

Neither do you.

If you can’t tell the difference between serious reporting and the sort of tabloid crap that the people I mentioned endured, then there’s not much point engaging with you. But for the not hard-of-thinking, there’s some interesting stuff on this thread.

Reporting on a fraud and conman being given a prestigious chair at Cambridge is serious reporting.

Careful, your racism is showing. Do you not see the problem with the initial charge of plagiarism coming from a man with an overtly racist agenda? Or that it was found to be untrue. Or that every achievement was then subject to aspersions even when there was irrefutable proof they were true? Calling him a con man is exactly the sort of crap I am talking about and it’s sickening.

The comments are bonkers. There are a frightening amount of people with nothing better to do then spew hate about someone they do not know

Yes - currently the intelligence & security services!

Actually, I don't consider paranoid conspiracy theories 'spewing hate' but the speculation is bonkers all right.

Yes, paranoid conspiracy theories indeed. Seems preferable to the facts or common sense at times, doesn't it? Bizarre.

I would hope that tax funded security (ie. the police) would indeed come to your aid if you were being burgled.

It is entirely reasonable to take the view that the state shouldn’t pay for their round the clock security, but I can entirely understand the worry when you read so many people who will never, ever meet them frothing at the mouth in anger just because she exists.

I don’t see any evidence of anyone doing the posting version of frothing at the mouth. You are the only one bring hyperbolic. The other posters just say they don’t warm to her fur various reasons, or don’t care one way or another.

If I agree with a racist on some things but not his white supremacist views, does that make me a racist? If my electrician's a right-wing crackpot, does valuing her professional skill make me one as well?

Nathan Cofnas hasn't been suspended for performing an incorrect assessment. He was right about Arday's plagiarism, and about the further critiques he made on looking into the man's claims.

I shan't go into it as we'll be derailing this thread. There's a good Reddit thread about it, you might be interested in the references and the discussion. www.reddit.com/r/PhD/comments/1volrmi/can_we_talk_about_the_jason_arday_plagiarism/

Wholeheartedly agree in expressing views. And having that debate. But there’s a massive difference between that and the language used by many posters and media outlets. Remember all the stuff about “why Meghan can’t keep her hands off her bump”. I mean, wtf? It’s also fascinating to me that people might be able to acknowledge we are in very hate-driven phase of society with the rise of far right political groups but still vehemently deny that there may be a racist bias in play with MM.

Such a lazy excuse.

Thanks for the link, I will check it out but still dispute tge plagiarism claim. The mistakes he admitted to are not the same thing - messing up or omitting a reference, although not good, are different due to intent.

FFSItsTooHot · 21/08/2026 17:11

It's not unreasonable for her to worry about her security. But it IS unreasonable to expect British taxpayers to foot the bill for it. Don't the Royal family have enough money to pay for it themselves?

Can you provide any evidence that Dr David Harris (an emeritus professor at Plymouth Marjon University) is racist? Or Jack Grove from TES? That seems rather libellous to me. Which is ironic given Arday tried to silence them with legal threats from Carter Ruck

Nathan Cofnas was not the person who initially raised the issue of plagerism and terrible scholarship. But that doesn’t fit the victim narrative Isitevensummer wants to spin about this con artist.

I’m spinning a narrative? Ok, then I see who you are and what you are looking for. I will continue to engage with reputable reporters on the subject of Arday but will reiterate that continuing to use such loaded language after someone has been hounded to death is disgraceful. But is shows some of what MM is up against and why she would be right to be concerned.

Arday tried to use accusations of racism to try and shut down scrutiny too. He didn’t appear to care for the impact on those he smeared either.

Backtoschooloncemore · 21/08/2026 17:58

Baseless accusations of racism seems to be something the three of you have in common.

Why would they? Everyone likes free money and the RF are experts in it

Wipeywipey · 21/08/2026 18:02

Agree with OP. There are some very angry people who seem to hate her with so much more passion than I see hate for public figures who do damage, such as Tommy Robinson, for example. I can't explain why people get so angry about her.

ASimpleLampoon · 21/08/2026 18:05

Remind me of nut jobs who think soap characters are real.

Bonkers and not in a good why

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2026 18:14

I don't hate her. But I do hate their behaviour.

Meg and Haz comments - Oprah, a book, a tv series to moan about how awful the Royals (& us Brits are). Why trash your family publicly ? Just walk away (but I'm assuming this doesn't make as much cash).

The Queen- recollections may vary

Everyone else - zip, nadda, zero comment

So all I can base my opinions on is what I've actually seen being said by them, not leaks, 'friends', press.

If you want privacy then go live a life away from the noise. Why did they even need to tell anyone they were coming back ? No one knew they were here for the last visit and they could have quietly moved back, somewhere away from the celebrity stuff and had a lovely life. Just don't understand. South Park got it right 🤷‍♀️

Assume she'll be doing this to Charles now

To think Meghan Markle has every right to worry about her security?
TonTonMacoute · 21/08/2026 18:37

Lots of journalists, politicians, writers and musicians get deluges of hate on SM. I don't believe that the stuff aimed at MM is any worse than some of the stuff JKR and Kathleen Stock were subjected too.for example. It's an unpleasant side of public life these days unfortunately.

I don't think anyone disagrees that the Sussexes will need security, but the main contention is that they want the tax payer to foot the bill for it. I don't think they are at a significantly higher risk than any other high profile figure and they can pay for it themselves like other people like the Beckhams do.

This is not normal behaviour (from you, not her). You don’t know her, she doesn’t owe you anything. She’s completely free to court the press if she wishes, it’s doing no harm at all.

Seriously no harm ? So it's OK to marry into the royal family use her acquired title at every opportunity and then speak publicly about how awful the royal family are. How dare she.

It's strange how some posters think that she (and Harry) are above criticism. They're polarising and controversial figures, people are going to comment, and it's not all going to be flattering.
