To be annoyed by this neighbour

New neighbour moved into a social housing bungalow behind our house a few months ago. He has been a bit of a nightmare to be honest. He doesn't make excessive noise as such but he is definitely impacting us and our immediate neighbours. Some examples are, letting his dog out for a wee at 6am every morning. It then barks when in the garden. It only barks 2 or 3 times and he ushers it back in the house but it is very loud, waking us up each time. He also has excessively loud phone conversations on speakerphone throughout the day. I mean really loud. I was in my bedroom the other night with the window closed and I could hear everything the person on the end of the line was saying it was that loud. It makes sitting in our garden a bit of a nightmare now to be honest. This happens at least 5 or 6 times throughout the day up until about 10pm. He has a loud car which he loves to rev up constantly and the exhaust has been modified to make it even louder. Is this just normal behaviour these days or do I contact the social housing provider? I will not speak to him direct as I've been warned he's quite aggressive.

YANBU to find the noise irritating. HINBU for living his life. In my family I have some super sensitive hearers. Ear plugs? Headphones? Music?

Morepositivemum · Today 07:04

To be honest he doesn’t sound too bad if he ushers the dog back in- his dog has to pee! And a lot of people have hearing issues now funnily due to phones and their volume (was on the radio only yesterday!!!) so not necessarily his fault! The car isn’t great but otherwise I think you probably had it lucky last neighbour and you will make an enemy if you csll around asking him to not bring his dog out or talk loudly! You could mention the revving if you can be diplomatic!!

ShetlandishMum · Today 07:05

Isn't this a quite common level of noise? Around here it is.

Ereerenownow · Today 07:18

Aw fair enough. I wasn't sure as its always been really peaceful and quiet round here until he moved in x

Just sounds part and parcel of living with neighbours
the only thing that jumps out is the need to reference social housing that’s the only unreasonable thing in this thread

The likely illegal exhaust is off (not least because it'll also mean that any insurance he has could technically be invalid - with some provisos)

The talking on the phone and the dog, there's not much you can do about though.

When I was growing up, next door was quite deaf, and we could hear her TV through the walls all the time. We counted ourselves lucky TBH, because it meant that we could make noise and it wouldn't disturb her :D

On the other hand the people 2 houses up with a little yappy dog really annoyed the whole close - because they had fancy double glazing, so when it started to bark at 3am they'd just chuck it into the garden to bark, and they were fine, the rest of us weren't - there were plenty of mutterings about that.

Thank you, I suppose it's adjusting to someone else moving into our little block. Up until this point it's been very peaceful and quiet and it sounds like we've had it really lucky for a long time x

Oh god, our dog went through a phase of announcing herself into the garden by barking early in the morning 🤦🏽‍♀️. I was like “think of the neighbours”! I think it was aimed at next doors dogs when we first got her as a rescue. She’s stopped now so maybe his dog will get used to it. We trained her by distracting with scent training/treats.

I don't think he is. Think he just likes his speakerphone on extra loud ..maybes to talk while he's doing other things?

OP posts:
CarrieOakie · Today 07:38

If you can hear the conversation on his phone in your bedroom- that is loud.

Yes it is extremely loud. I've never heard a speakerphone that loud before. As someone else mentioned, I initially thought he might be deaf but apparently he isn't, he just likes speakerphone conversations

The dog needs to wee.
He may be deaf.
The only think that might be unreasonable is revving the car if he's doing it deliberately, you complaining about the first two makes me think the car may also be normal sounds but you've just took a disliking to the man.

He isn't deaf and I haven't taken a dislike to him .i dont know him x

The car is fucking outrageous. There’s someone in my neighbourhood who revs a terrible old car and drives around in it blatting away. I’ve never seen him and don’t know where he lives, but he certainly makes himself heard. I’d cheerfully throttle him.
People saying the phone thing is ok, no, really, being able to hear every word from the person on the other end of the phone is not ok or normal. That’s beyond loud.
I’d try the housing provider, and maybe local councillors and/or your MP.

If you don’t know him, you obviously have no idea if he’s deaf.

JohnofWessex · Today 07:48

I would report the car to The Police and they can take action

Check on line for Tax & MoT as it might not be legal anyway.

There's only so loud a phone will go though surely?
It sounds pretty normal to be honest, my friend is partially deaf, no one would ever know but she does need to listen to things louder.

Absolutely nothing.
That was my point. It wasn’t relevant to your post.

But I would have said if he owned or private rented as it might have been relevant. Think you just desperately wanted me to have a problem with social housing ..I dont

I'm someone who would love to live in the middle of nowhere, as far away from my neighbours as possible, so I do sympathise OP. However, they do sound like relatively normal neighbourhood sounds.

My ddog is a barker. As soon as she barks, she's called in. I hate the idea that I'm irritating my neighbours, but I've been unable to stop her barking. She's a protection breed and is always alert, unfortunately.

The car revving - is he sat there continually revving and trying to make as much noise as possible? If it's just the start up sound, I'm not sure there's much anyone will do. If it's constant and attention seeking, see about logging a noise complaint with the council. I had to do one previously and had to log every sound, time, and the impact it was having on our household for three weeks. Neighbours basically just got told to be more considerate. They are to an extent, but still like to play music on speaker in the garden, or let their children scream outside for hours at a time.

The speakerphone seems very odd, as even in his own garden I'm surprised it'd loud enough to reach you behind closed windows.

Raptors · Today 08:40

I honestly don't see that he's doing anything unusual or making any more noise than any other neighbour would. Yes the engine would annoy me but again it's hardly unusual. It does from this post sound like you've just taken a dislike to him to be honest.
