To be annoyed by this neighbour

New neighbour moved into a social housing bungalow behind our house a few months ago. He has been a bit of a nightmare to be honest. He doesn't make excessive noise as such but he is definitely impacting us and our immediate neighbours. Some examples are, letting his dog out for a wee at 6am every morning. It then barks when in the garden. It only barks 2 or 3 times and he ushers it back in the house but it is very loud, waking us up each time. He also has excessively loud phone conversations on speakerphone throughout the day. I mean really loud. I was in my bedroom the other night with the window closed and I could hear everything the person on the end of the line was saying it was that loud. It makes sitting in our garden a bit of a nightmare now to be honest. This happens at least 5 or 6 times throughout the day up until about 10pm. He has a loud car which he loves to rev up constantly and the exhaust has been modified to make it even louder. Is this just normal behaviour these days or do I contact the social housing provider? I will not speak to him direct as I've been warned he's quite aggressive.

But I would have said if he owned or private rented as it might have been relevant. Think you just desperately wanted me to have a problem with social housing ..I dont

The context of his housing situation is not relevant in this case. Why would it be? The fact you mentioned he lived in social housing is giving the impression YOU as the OP find it relevant to your post.

He's being inconsiderate with the loud phone calls and the noisy car. He may just be a loud person in general?

Report the noise to social housing if it continues. I would.

Report the modified exhaust anonymously. It is illegal and it may well mean that the car has no MOT or insurance either.

Not necessarily illegal. One of my old cars was heavily modified but everything was legally declared to the insurance company.

theemmadilemma · Today 11:10

Sad as it is, it's all largely just noise of daily life. Some people are simply noisier than others.

I can completely understand how annoying it must be though if you've had the gift of lovely quiet neighbours until now.

But largely (bar possibly the car) he's doing nothing reportable other than making more noise than you are used to.

So what was the relevance of social housing in your OP?

Christ Almighty, some people have a real chip on their shoulder.
She says, 'do I contact the social housing provider?' and some posters have advised her to do so.
If he was a home-owner she'd have asked/been advised about something relevant to that. If he was a private renter she'd have asked/been advised about something relevant to that.

jackstini · Today 11:24

My only thought was does he have any idea you can hear every word?

If he knows, he might turn it down!

Would it be obvious if an anonymous note was from you?

I would send something saying, just to let you know people living around can hear every word when you are on speaker phone. No issue, but wanted to advise in case you are ever having a conversation which needs to be confidential

(& I get the relevance to social housing - if you were to report then private rent, council house, owned etc. would make a difference as to where to!)

Just sounds part and parcel of living with neighbours
the only thing that jumps out is the need to reference social housing that’s the only unreasonable thing in this thread

Not unreasonable to mention it's a HA bungalow. It's relevant because she can report him to the HA. Most new developments have a 3 strikes policy for HA tenants.

I really haven't taken a dislike to him im not sure why you wpuld say that. I was simply asking if the noise is reasonable as this is an aibu thread and we've previously been lucky enough to live in a quiet area.

I have to say, you saying he was annoying and has been a nightmare does make it sound like you don’t like him very much. I don’t think it’s particularly surprising people have assumed you don’t like bim
based on what you’ve said.

Yes it is extremely loud. I've never heard a speakerphone that loud before. As someone else mentioned, I initially thought he might be deaf but apparently he isn't, he just likes speakerphone conversations

You’ve gone from you don’t think he is deaf to apparently he isn’t deaf. You don’t know.

Not sure why it’s relevant that his home is social housing, but presumably there is a landlord you can raise any issues with. Or, just realise that people make noise and live with it.

StasisMom · Today 12:24

My dog is a woofer so I put her on her lead to take her out for a wee - she doesn’t woof then. Tbf she also likes a lie in.

Ereerenownow · Today 12:32

Thank you everyone who has offered some genuine advice. To those labouring the social housing thing, I dislike him, how do I know he isn't deaf angle, etc I thank you too for your useful insights x

If it's as loud as she says it will be illegal.

Glittertwins · Today 15:27

Mine was loud admittedly but it was not illegal. Hard to judge unless you have a decibel meter

To be honest he doesn’t sound too bad if he ushers the dog back in- his dog has to pee! And a lot of people have hearing issues now funnily due to phones and their volume (was on the radio only yesterday!!!) so not necessarily his fault! The car isn’t great but otherwise I think you probably had it lucky last neighbour and you will make an enemy if you csll around asking him to not bring his dog out or talk loudly! You could mention the revving if you can be diplomatic!!

This 👆 I hate hearing people’s speaker phone conversations in public, but the guy in in his own garden. Some people (including my very nice next door neighbour) have naturally loud voices. It is perfectly reasonable of him to let his dog out to pee at 6am, ushering it inside as soon as it barks. The car would be irritating to many people, but there has to be an element of life and let life between neighbours.

It’s interesting that you stated at the outset of your post that his home is social housing. That has no relevance to the issues you raise, but given you said it, it’s clearly significant to you. That smacks of snobbery I’m afraid and that isn’t a good look on you!

I've explained myself several times regarding the social housing comment. Im not doing it again for you. Please read the full thread and if you have, and you still think im snobbish then you have no comprehension of what I've been saying.

And to be honest, I couldn't give a shit if people like you think it isn't a good look for me. My god who do you think you are? How do you know im not living in social housing? You dont, and people like you who have an axe to grind dont care about the facts, they care about burning people who are genuinely looking for advice...that's off my chest so nick off and dont comment again if all you can add are your own prejudices and assumptions

So have you had a conversation with him yet to let him know you can hear his phone calls?

Yes I have, about an hour ago after reading all the suggestions on here to do so. He told me to piss off. Another neighbour overheard and came out and said his noise was also bothering her and her family...he also told her to piss off. We were both polite to him...him, not so polite

We have A neighbour like this, no dog though but just blunders around being noisy like people HAVE to know he's there. Big booming voice , can't talk normal at all any time of day.
