It’s autumn!

Okay, maybe not meteorological autumn yet, but it’s definitely in the air. There’s that cool edge to the breeze and it’s chilly in the morning and evening. After the long hot summer we’ve had it’s definitely needed!

AIBU to be excited?!

I don’t know about you but we don’t do central heating till it’s frosty!

Our thermostatically controlled heating comes on when the temperature drops to below 20 degrees in the living room. DH is terribly underweight due to health issues and being cold makes him ill.

I hate being cold as well. My BIL acts all morally superior because he doesn't feel the cold, which I find very irritating. I refrain from reminding him that he is considerably more well padded than I am and I try not to visit them in winter as sitting in a cold living room with no curtains at the windows is utterly miserable.

No.

And when it does come all these moany posts we’ve had about glorious sunshine will be replaced by people boring on about snuggling in autumn and drinking mountains of mugs of sickly hot chocolate

Edited

And I will love that

Mycatisreal · 20/08/2026 12:02

Muggy in SE London yesterday. Stupidly I thought I could wear my coat and glad I didn’t; I’d have peaked too soon. Cooler today. Smattering of rain and a nice breeze. Bring it on

Sound like purgatory x

What we need is a long running thread for each season so the summer lovers can chat, so can the autumn lovers etc. Pulling up a chair in the autumn camp, it's so nice to not be absolutely boiling for once!

RampantIvy · 20/08/2026 12:59

As someone who is normally a summer lover I actually agree with you. We have had a lot of very much needed rain over the last 12+ hours.

I don't mind any season as long as it isn't gloomy, which is usually situation normal for where we live. A bright, crisp autumn or winter's day is lovely, but rare. Several drizzly grey weather day after day after day is utterly miserable.

I do find that the long dark nights get me down though, but if it is punctuated by bright days I can live with that.

EasternStandard · 20/08/2026 13:01

First time wearing jeans in ages. Plus some proper rain and last, if short lived.

Christ I can’t imagine that! Our house is regularly 14 in the winter and it’s perfect

it's not cold as such here but i've been wearing trousers and a hoodie the last two days to work from home and was very tempted to put the heating on for an hour when i got up this morning! Last night it was cloudy and damp and I had to put lights on at 8:30pm :(

LlynTegid · 20/08/2026 13:05

It is a month and a day away. When the schools in England and Wales return, sunshine will come back.

Meterological autumn is a nonsense dreamt up by the attention seekers who promote interest in the weather. Just as we have 'weather presenters' chosen on the basis of appearance largely, some of whom are not meterologists.

Projectprincesschaos · 20/08/2026 13:06

Yes just got settled with a book in garden and it bloody rained - cannot win with British Weather

Projectprincesschaos · 20/08/2026 13:07

…and some autumn decor stuff followed me home last week

Both DH and I would be utterly miserable at 14 degrees. His BMI is too low and he is in heart failure. The optimum temperature for him is 20 - 22 degrees.

Temperatures below 15 degrees can stress the cardiovascular system by increasing blood pressure and vascular resistance, potentially worsening heart failure.

We stay toasty! Open fires and my favourite cosy fleeces

14 sounds way too low. 17 and above here.

Ah, you never said anything about another form of heating. I thought you were sitting in a cold house. We need the ambient temperature to be 20 degrees.

Just watching torrential rain outside now.

Shedmistress · 20/08/2026 13:13

I'm in the SW of France and its 23°c here. What a relief.
I have shorts on still today and am enjoying being really cold.

RampantIvy · 20/08/2026 13:15

Currently 14 degrees here and pouring.
One of our water butts has been completely filled now.

autumnleavesonthefloor · 20/08/2026 13:30

We’ve got the perfect weather. Heavy showers but periods of sun in between so no flooding

mondaytosunday · 20/08/2026 13:36

Uh not here (London). It’s not scorching hot but still in the 20s, which one would expect for late August.

autumnleavesonthefloor · Today 09:04

There’s a definite chill in the air down in Devon now. I’m away for the weekend and I’ve had to pack a jumper!

To be fair, the weekends are your own choice.

I hate the darkness but the heat has just been too much this summer. I’ve been ill with it, so I can’t be angry about it.

This time of year is my favourite. The late August days where we still have empty daylight for the days to feel long, warm days but chilly mornings and evenings, it’s maybe more acceptable to have a bowl of stew for dinner instead of some salad-y creation that nobody really likes. I always make an effort to go on holiday at this time of year too so I can really enjoy the September days when they come

Is this irony or genuine?
