It’s autumn!

Okay, maybe not meteorological autumn yet, but it’s definitely in the air. There’s that cool edge to the breeze and it’s chilly in the morning and evening. After the long hot summer we’ve had it’s definitely needed!

AIBU to be excited?!

Actual temp 18°c, feels like 16°c
Currently light drizzle
House is 21°c however I don’t trust our kitchen thermostat so likely wrong

IcePrincesss · 19/08/2026 23:18

I’m very “woo” and pedantic on the seasons, so would usually say “the equinox isn’t until 23rd September so it’s no autumn”.

But autumn is my favourite season and this heat has been unbearable so bring it on!

Peakyblinder18 · 19/08/2026 23:48

Its August. We had a little respite in temperature for sure thank goodness. We've another heatwave coming, I'd leave the horlicks and curtains for another while yet.

Mumsnet is obsessed with cosy, snuggling, autumnal, boots, jumpers, stews, crumbles and hot choc. 🙄

dreamiesformolly · 20/08/2026 03:13

Get thee behind me, Satan! 😄

The weather may have cooled but personally I'm in no hurry whatsoever for it to be autumn, especially as I suffer from SAD and the approach of winter is something I dread.

At least people aren't saying 'Ooh, the nights are drawing in' yet... now, that really does give me the stabs. 😬

In real life most people food like winter, but mumsnetters love nothing more than snuggling under a cosy blanket in candlelight drinking hot chocolate.

I'm in the minority preferring to feel warm enough without the need for a blanket, I hate candlelight and am not a fan of caloric hot sweet drinks.

Autumn makes me sad. We had a huge spider in the house the other day and spider season is just the worst. It puts me on edge for months.

Frumpitydoo · 20/08/2026 06:36

A sixth heatwave has been given (planned) for early September...

Frumpitydoo · 20/08/2026 06:37

And to all the Arachnophobics, invest in a cat.

Got rain forecast all week here in the midlands, I’ve had to put a hoodie on and shut the windows.

Ive seen multiple suggestions of a precursor to a “Beast from the East” style polar vortex developing in the Atlantic which suggests an extremely cold, wet winter. I’m so excited at the possibility of -20°c real feels and heaps of rain/snow

Yeah really looking forward to the shops being empty of essentials because of panic buying.

My stupid Kindle's spellcheck is insane!

In real life most people food like winter

Should read "in real life most people dislike winter"

I’m so excited at the possibility of -20°c real feels and heaps of rain/snow

I admit that I still get excited about having a bit of snow, but I doubt that most people would enjoy the inconvenience of empty supermarket shelves, ungritted roads, cancelled public transport and high heating bills @Hycosaneyedrops

A few days ago I walked out my front door right into a spider’s web. I’ve got to remember to check as the spiders have a habit of sitting right in the centre, where my face will meet it 😫

It's fantasy land stuff. Nothing wrong with that but fantasy all the same.

The reality is cold, wet dark days.

I actually don't believe anybody snuggles under a blanket drinking hot chocolate.

Most houses are central heated. Having a blanket over you would make you too hot unless you keep the heating low or simply can't afford the heating - in which circumstances you'd unlikely to be 'cosy'.

And hot chocolate is sickly sweet and too much for most people.

I hate snow and ice. It would make me happy if it never snowed or dropped below freezing point again.

I have noticed myself getting a lot more tired in the mornings. The sun lamp will be back out soon, and the vitamin d tablets are starting tomorrow!

This thread has made me realise I need to get the daylight lamp out! I always leave it too late!

We rarely have the heating on unless it’s super cold! Perimenopause makes me run hot so I’d much rather a blanket than the central heating!!

I don’t put the heating on much because it makes me feel sick for some reason. I’ll put it on for a few hours if it’s REALLY cold but can’t handle it anymore than that, so I do sit under a blanket every night in autumn/winter!

I don’t know about you but we don’t do central heating till it’s frosty!
