Absolutely this.
This is so true for so many people, me included also
40s but the thing is when I physically couldn’t concentrate or focus at school and was sent out of most classes for daydreaming, not paying attention or rocking on my chair, or never knowing what I was doing, I wasn’t stood outside the door with 10 other people just like me, I was standing there all by myself humiliated while the other kids looked on in disbelief, where were all the other ADHD kids?
I masked to the best of my ability but everyone could see a mile away I was different and there’s no way I could have pretended otherwise for 6 hours, ADHD didn’t exist so I wasn’t blaming any condition and was dealt some pretty severe punishments for my symptoms which didn’t cure them.
I was on a reduced timetable by year 8 and no longer welcome by year 9, no education, no opportunities.
I didn’t want to be the naughty kid, it was humiliating but try as I might I just physically didn’t have the ability to pay attention and learn.
This is why it’s important people don’t self diagnose because they occasionally experience a symptom or struggle with executive function because that’s not the same as a disorder which for many is so debilitating that they can barely function and are just desperately trying to get through life.
I was born in 1979 so did not have devices or even a phone and the only television was in the lounge with 4 channels and apart from the occasional cartoon it was just what my parents watched the news and weather on and we went out to play.
My parents were not pushovers, they were absolutely clear what was expected of us and very no nonsense and my siblings were well behaved but no amount of smacks, stern talking to, being sent my room, lost pocket money or being grounded would make me stop having ADHD.
I first attempted to take my life at the age of 11 when I started secondary school as I tried my best to work hard but I couldn’t cope and just felt like I was drowning and didn’t know what was wrong with me, there was no support or understanding, just the same ignorant mocking and ridicule I get today and have had suicidal ideology ever since because I still have ADHD diagnosed in my 40s life is just something I have to get through but the diagnosis is meaningless when so many people run around saying yeah I can be a bit like that to.
