AIBU to think the PM is ignoring the asylum issue?

I’m firmly working class, and I don’t believe that what we need is to spread the asylum seekers around more. The reason I’m annoyed is not because I don’t want them housed by the middle class, but because I think it’s completely ignoring the problem. I think we need secure detention centres whilst the country either approves the application or sends them off home. These will be safe, food provided, clothes, play areas for the children. The accommodation will have the basics like temporary housing does but they can’t leave until application approved or sent home. But they can’t leave and roam UK unless their application is accepted. Anyone who is violent etc and makes it not safe will automatically be sent home.
I liked this prime minister as I thought he had both feet on the ground, but it seems not….!
If he admits it’s not fair only working class has to deal with it, then surely, he admits it’s a problem and he’s not actually addressing it?

YANBU = PM ignoring actual issue
YABU = Issue is that only working class have to deal with them

Serious Immigration has gone on for 23 years - you can blah blah about scare mongering but like anyone in the U.K. now I can see that the country is stuffed and that bringing more in to feed, house, educate, healthcare is a foolish and unfair burden

Fine, what is your practical solution that doesn’t make us poorer?

Angela59 · 16/08/2026 12:50

ScarlettOYara · 16/08/2026 08:03

To be fair, that is an example of an extreme and pressing matter because of the demand on firefighters, and concerns about wildfires spreading.

Like I said, “not that it isn’t serious”

  1. Stop immigration

As I said, if someone has a better policy (and I’ve explained a few times why Fortress is not a better policy), then they should present it for everyone to consider. I don’t believe in magic though and am sceptical of anyone who claims to have easy solutions. As it stands, things do look to be improving under Labour (albeit slowly).

It won’t be easy but it is doable. Australia shows how, but also other countries in the EU.

Very sad when people are very enthusiastic about introducing concentration camps to the UK

Litehartstuth · 16/08/2026 12:55

Its probably to complicated for me. But what i do understand. Is that we can't even house family's already in the uk. There are way to many families and children in temporary accommodation. Often damp mouldy and full of vermin.

Oh yes, so let everyone roam free? Like the Eritrean man who has just raped a male pensioner in North London?

I remember a poster a while back who actually owned that it did not matter if a percentage of asylum seekers/refugees/migrants were criminals and the case of the lady who worked in an asylum hotel who was screwdrivered to death was merely unfortunate.

Freysimo · 16/08/2026 13:00

We could make a start by returning foreign offenders to their own country. This would then free up prison places. I've never understood why they can't be sent back after conviction. If they've got family here, tough, they can return with them.

We only have three parties with any realistic prospect of forming a government. I’m not sure any of them are really looking at the immigration policies of other EU countries, although I don’t know what the current Tory policy is. The Australian social and economic context is very different to ours.

In what way is the social and economic context different enough to exclude emulating their policies?

MaturingCheeseball · 16/08/2026 13:03

When it’s said “Oh, we don’t know where they come from” - just look at their phones!! They all get given a phone upon arrival; don’t tell me that they make no contact with family and friends.

There is a very skilful and well resourced fear mongering campaign in operation that is successfully terrifying the population. We are told that the immigrants are ‘invading’ and ‘swarming’. That they are all ‘fighting age men’. Someone earlier described them as a ‘sea of rapists and murderers’. Many people have stopped even thinking of them as human beings. We are then encouraged to vote for a party that promises to protect us. It’s the oldest trick in the book. I’m happy to look at any policies that are put forward, but we have to do a proper critical analysis on them. Operation Fortress will not work and will put us in an economically dire situation - yes, actually worse than it is now! That will have knock on consequences for funding our public services, housing and all the rest of it. I personally won’t vote for that.

Whenever I see news reports of the small boat crossings on the BBC or Sky News though, the vast majority arriving appear to be young, single men.

I live in a small market town, and the high street and local environment have changed dramatically in just a few years. It's the sheer speed of change that I find unsettling.

We now have multiple barbers right next door to each other, vape shops, and nail bars replacing traditional shops, alongside begging on the footbridge connecting the car park to the town centre, which makes walking in feel uncomfortable.

Hearing politicians like Andy Burnham suggest that more suburban and market town areas should take higher numbers of asylum seekers makes me genuinely worried about the impact on local services and safety of my children.

@BermudaRhombusas nothing can be done about risk and crimes (Eg Belfast, Rhiannon, Brighton, Germany, other countries) would you just keep the system and accept that collateral risk?

No, you are wrong. I would LOVE them to be housed in the middle of the middle classes. They wanted to rub our noses in it as far back as 1997. Their call now. However, they are waking up now, those woke middle classes - a couple of colleagues were furious their straight A students with glowing references were passed over in their attempts to study medicine because the UK universities in question prioritised children of migrants and asylum seekers - so not even an interview offered. They went to Poznan to study medicine now, all in English, no UCAT, no BMAT, and gosh, they are converts now, having seen how Poland deals with unwanted guests. The only thing is that they are planning to come back to the UK to practice - and I have no idea if it is possible, with a Polish degree? So I shall observe with a great deal of interest the progression of their political views when they come back - two years left now. Exciting to see metamorphoses in progress!

Do be so fucking offensive. A camp for refugees is no way similar to concentration camps where people were tortured, raped and murdered, including my own grandfather.
Have a word with yourself you loon.

Well certainly many people seeking asylum here are non-Muslims who are fleeing Islam majority countries (especially people who have converted from Islam). A large percentage of claimants also come from countries with Christian majorities or mixed religious landscapes, such as Albania, Vietnam, Eritrea etc. But sure, there are also plenty of Islamic claimants.

This!

This is our future. All this crap about fortresses and economics! Ffs, do they think we're stupid?! People can see what's going on. Being expected to deny what we can see and hear now are we? Yeah, I've definitely heard that somewhere before. Not everyone is a love island, fake handbag wearing, beer addled fool, many of us saw this coming 20 years ago and have followed the trajectory carefully.

I agree with you that project fortress is crap! The economics though are very serious.
