Who is actually “for” Meta glasses (“pervert glasses”)?

I’m not sure if AIBU is the right place for this question, but I am really, desperately curious to know if there is any one out there who thinks that these are a good idea? Or indeed, not a privacy concern for other unconsenting people?

So on that basis:

YABU - what is your actual problem? There’s nothing wrong with them and I have a pair/would buy them
YANBU - legitimate question – I find them creepy AF

Perverts?

Maddy70 · 15/08/2026 15:12

I don't live in the UK and a friend of mine bought them as translation Aids. They are very good for that it's very obvious of they are filming as a light goes on. I'm certain some would use them for dodgy purposes the same way as currently they use phones etc. But most people are normal !

mrsbinghamsapron · 15/08/2026 15:12

I fucking HATE them. My DSS has some and I don't like him wearing them in our house, makes me feel like he's filming our family and showing it to his mum (fairly certain he isn't but it still feels like an invasion of privacy)

Femalemachinest · 15/08/2026 15:19

My brother has some. Hes the only person I know who does. He's a bricklayer/roofer, self employed and uses them to film his work to upload to his work socials.

I dont know much about them and I can see why people arent keen, but people can stealth film on their phones without you realising too.

Velumental · 15/08/2026 15:20

They are an amazing tool for the visually impaired.

Perverts?

Specs offenders

househelp12345 · 15/08/2026 15:33

I don’t understand the worry. The light comes on if someone is filming or taking a photo so you can tell. Much more transparent than a phone when you’re not sure if someone is taking a selfie or filming you.

Sometimesitsmyownfault · 15/08/2026 15:41

I’m buying a pair for skiing, fantastic for filming some runs. There are lots of legitimate reasons for owning them.
Are we advocating that no one can have nice things because some people misuse them?
No electric bikes as some are used by hooligans?
No sports cars as some people will speed in them?
No alcohol - because alchoholics?
Why do we reduce everything down to what the lowest common denominator will do, therefore - ban everything?

romdowa · 15/08/2026 15:41

Meta have donated thousand of them to vision ireland which are a charity for those who are blind and vision impaired and they charity will give these away to people as they improve their quality of life. So im in favour of these types of glasses when used like this.

Well TELL HIM you aren’t wearing these in the house!

topcat2014 · 15/08/2026 15:46

I'd need them with prescription lenses!

I have to stop walking when my phone rings - so don't think they'd be for me.

Plus I don't want any more bastard things to charge

As if a pervert couldn't easily find a way around that.
We ALL know the lengths to which creepy men will go to to be creepy.
There's probably already a hack available or they can just stick electrical tape over the light.
Don't be so naive

TheFormerMrsTruelove · 15/08/2026 15:53

Not a fan. I accept that there are a million fantastic uses for them, and there’s no putting the sauce back in the bottle now, but there will always be one overly entitled fucknut who thinks that it’s perfectly fine to record people without their knowledge or consent and stick the footage on the internet. The glasses are just a bit sneakier.

NotAnotherScarf · 15/08/2026 15:56

My mate who's registered blind but can now go shopping alone..

Pistachiocake · 15/08/2026 15:57

There's an argument that, developed in a certain way, these could help people with medical issues, eg link to other info to guide them about where to go etc. Eg my gran with dementia could have the glasses see where she was/where she was trying to go/remind her of people's names if twinned with ear buds. Though the camera would be watching, it would be to help her, eg take 2 of those pills, the woman talking to you is Jane who has a daughter who knows yours, turn left at the next street/link to her TV/other appliances to sort things for her.
Until you've been suffering in that sort of situation, it might not be possible to fully understand, but it's a shame that some people think sick thoughts, instead of how useful it could be.

cupfinalchaos · 15/08/2026 15:58

Dh wearing them now on holiday.. doesn’t need to hold his phone if he’s on a work call and carrying bags.. doubt he’ll use them at home it’s just a gadget for him

Nope! There are loads of online forums dedicated to defeating or covering the light. Wow! You're naive.

ScottBakula · 15/08/2026 16:00

I am in favor of them when used correctly, I know of two cases where horse riders have been able to use them as proof of irresponsible dog owners allowing dogs to attack their horses while out on a ride.

worcesterpear · 15/08/2026 16:04

I think they're mostly aimed at men, noticed they had them in Vision Express, a special display in the men's section but couldn't see any in the women's. Put me off Vision Express a bit.

bellinisurge · 15/08/2026 16:08

I think visually impaired people find them helpful

ThePeppyOpalScroller · 15/08/2026 16:11

People only use them for one reason. That's to film covertly, otherwise they would use their phones. When first launched (Google Glass) the people who wore them were referred to as Glassholes. People who wear these are doing so in order to film others. If you saw a man filming children in a playground, your children, what would you do? To Meta's annoyance, they have been dubbed Paedo Glasses. I can't fathom why anyone would wear them. If you want to be classes as a Paedophile and you're happy with that label, fine. But I don't think people think about the connotations before they drop a few hundred pounds on a pair.

concertinacornflake · 15/08/2026 16:11

You could have the visual impairment benefit without the pervert recording potential.

I hate them and hope more places ban them.

Exactly, they just encourage people to rat on eachother.

A helmet cam would achieve this.
