Who is actually “for” Meta glasses (“pervert glasses”)?

I’m not sure if AIBU is the right place for this question, but I am really, desperately curious to know if there is any one out there who thinks that these are a good idea? Or indeed, not a privacy concern for other unconsenting people?

So on that basis:

YABU - what is your actual problem? There’s nothing wrong with them and I have a pair/would buy them
YANBU - legitimate question – I find them creepy AF

Can I just throw into the mix the rumoured AirPods with cameras? Low resolution cameras, mainly for situational awareness, but still cameras

Don't be stupid. Drivers who break the law and drive dangerously deserve everything they get.

I already upload to the police via my phone, glasses will mean I can be hands free when I'm carrying shopping. Pedestrians see a lot of dodgy stuff and a lot of us want to make sure it's dealt with.

In which case, all power to you.

These glasses are adding to the creeping normalisation of being filmed in public at any time.

It's not just the potential sex offenders that will abuse them, it's bullies too

Whatever you're doing could potentially be uploaded to a group to belittle and mock you. As an example, a few years ago there were groups uploading photos of women eating in public and the comments on them were just awful bullying nastiness.

People are now policing what they are doing in case they are filmed. These glasses are making that surreptitious filming so much easier.

I get that they are great for those with visual impairments, but why do they need to have a recording function. The downsides of that far exceeds the upsides

100% this.

I agree they are useful aids to those with sight issues. They have a place.

Everyone else, my BIL included, is just a weirdo for using them. But then he also has cameras and listening smart speakers all round his house indoors and outdoors. I am barely there these days (they live locally) and one day I will be asked and have to tell him I feel like he is some kind of voyeur.

LiuBei · 17/08/2026 18:04

Your options are mad. I wouldn't want a pair, I'm fine with other people owning them. Everyone is already carrying a phone that can record, I don't think the glasses are that big a change.

I can imagine them becoming useful, live subtitling would be good, especially for people who are still learning a language. I think you need a really high bar for banning other people from using something. I really prefer a live-and-let-live world. There are obviously limits to this, I'm not chill about nuclear weapons being sold on facebook marketplace. Nonetheless I don't think these glasses are anywhere near a big enough problem to be banned.

Just saw some news today that Meta have patented facial recognition technology in their Rayban glasses - I don't like this idea at all.

Yep, this is awful.

I don’t understand the worry. The light comes on if someone is filming or taking a photo so you can tell. Much more transparent than a phone when you’re not sure if someone is taking a selfie or filming you.

There are a lot of hacks, it takes 5 sec to work around it and not have the light on whilst filming.

I find them horrendous, I hate people filming everything all the time too, but except for people who are visually impaired, I don't think they're going to make the world a better place, quite the opposite.
A french tech youtuber has managed to hack it so it shows random people's identity, instagram profile etc on the glasses. She did it for education purposes, but imagine the future with something like that? Soon we'll have to pay a subscription to have our faces pixelated.

Just thinking that its convenient for translating makes me want to cry. Learn the langage. Use gestures. There are fantastic ways to communicate beyond just words, other than looking at another screen.
People have been traveling and communicating for thousand of years, not everything is supposed to be easy and sorted.

Question from an uninformed person - do they need to record to be useful/functional or do they just need to “see”? I’m assuming there is a difference between these two types of functions in terms of keeping and sharing footage but I don’t have a clue.

It depends on if you want to rely on an AI installed within the glasses to give you the information or if you want to be able to upload photo or video to a programme like Be My Eyes, or do a google image search or send a photo of where you are to a friend etc. You could take the recording function away and they would be some use, but a lot of this is technology that already exists on phones so the real benefit is having a voice activated, hands free phone, strapped to your face so you always know its pointing the right way.

I'm sure you can imagine how much of a benefit that is to someone who never has both hands free because they are always holding a dog or a cane, suddenly you can also hold a shopping basket as well and not have to switch between shopping basket and phone and back again constantly when you are shopping. It is game changing technology for the sight impaired.

I think this is amazing! I have a terrible memory for faces (I've been known to walk past people I've know for years) and the idea that I could look at someone and a pop-up reminds me who there are would be be so helpful

Oh it can be, and is. Case in point, Tesco last year. Someone saw me and said hello, asked me about the new car, how was our holiday and did our child like school. No idea who they were and I was too embarrassed to ask

worcesterpear · 17/08/2026 21:38

@BorneBackCeaselesslyIntoThePas I also have a terrible memory for faces but you must be able to see the problems with this idea. Predators pretending to know girls and young women who may assume they know them from somewhere, not withstanding the massive invasion of privacy.

BorneBackCeaselesslyIntoThePas · 17/08/2026 21:44

But would the glasses ‘know’ everyone, or just the faces you teach it? Like the doorbells that can tell you who is at the door, but only if you’ve trained it for that person

allthiscarryon · 17/08/2026 21:45

Creepy as fuck and for creepy fucks and sad sack ‘influencers’.
Work put out an email
saying they are NOT to be used on the premises because of a lack of privacy because someone wore them in an office.
Was it a nice normal person? Was it a tech geek interested in modern advances but careful with how they used it?
Course not, it was the weird creepy guy who everyone thinks is a weird creepy guy.

I think unfortunately your problem affects you, but widespread facial recognition tech will harm everyone.
