Who is actually “for” Meta glasses (“pervert glasses”)?

I’m not sure if AIBU is the right place for this question, but I am really, desperately curious to know if there is any one out there who thinks that these are a good idea? Or indeed, not a privacy concern for other unconsenting people?

So on that basis:

YABU - what is your actual problem? There’s nothing wrong with them and I have a pair/would buy them
YANBU - legitimate question – I find them creepy AF

They are an amazing tool for the visually impaired.

I recently saw a facebook reel of a young girl who was completely blind going shopping in a toyshop with these glasses. The glasses were able to tell her all about the toys she was looking at, what the dolls were wearing, what their names were etc. I thought they were a brilliant invention, to allow people independence and not have to rely on another person.

UnaOfStormhold · 15/08/2026 16:22

I'd find them very handy as I have face blindness, but would never wear them. Sad that something that could have great potential has yet again been wrecked by dodgy people.

notagainyoufool · 15/08/2026 16:23

My teens have them. They’ve been travelling around Asia this summer and have used them lots on their travels.

Pretty grim for all the people they are filming without consent.

I am severely sight impaired and part of a few groups associated with sight loss, several members have Meta glasses and really benefit from them (both men and women). The filming function is if little benefit most of the time, I only know of one occasion when a blind person found the pavement blocked by overhanging branches and filmed the location to send to the local authority (for them to then ignore unfortunately). It’s a real shame as the potential benefit to sight impaired people is significant but the poor behaviour of some men is potentially ruining it for everyone.

timtamsarebetterthanpenguins · 15/08/2026 16:34

They're amazing for dog walkers - so we can film hands-free and safely when we have issues with the public, and also just for social media in general. I don't own a pair but I know a lot who do and they absolutely love them.

Summerunlover · 15/08/2026 16:35

I am blind and not giving mine up for any one. They have changed my life. And my independence.

NorthXNorthWest · 15/08/2026 16:36

I would like a record notes/ research / videos for several hobbies I do. I wouldn't walk around the street in them though.

trailerT · 15/08/2026 16:37

I love them -I have 2 pairs .I called them pervy when my husband first showed me them but the light comes on if you are filming or taking a photo .I mainly take photos of scenery ,sunsets etc or if I am somewhere that doesn’t feel safe I can leave my phone in my bag .
I use them for chatting to my Mum while I am walking with my dog …I don’t feel safe with earbuds as I can’t hear anyone walking behind me or cars etc .
I think because of the technology you can now get glasses that have hearing aids built, in so that’s a brilliant development .I love them and think they actually keep women safe as you can instantly call someone from them if needed .

surely they would have been filmed with a phone anyway?

People can see when they're being filmed with a phone. Plus the film doesn't get sent automatically to Meta. The whole controversy over these glasses is how intrusive they are.

They normalise treating other people like unpaid extras in the wearer's life.

PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 15/08/2026 16:59

You can already get tiny hidden cameras. My DDs are severely dyslexic and the glasses would be amazing when they're adults for making the world more accessible.

helpfulperson · 15/08/2026 17:00

There was a lady on another thread whose sister had suddenly lost her eyesight. I imagine her sister will find them useful. I have an eye condition that means I may lose my sight at any time, or may not. Just knowing they will be an option if needed is reassuring for me.

Every advancement the human race has ever made has been used for war and perverts.

People only use them for one reason. That's to film covertly, otherwise they would use their phones. When first launched (Google Glass) the people who wore them were referred to as Glassholes. People who wear these are doing so in order to film others. If you saw a man filming children in a playground, your children, what would you do? To Meta's annoyance, they have been dubbed Paedo Glasses. I can't fathom why anyone would wear them. If you want to be classes as a Paedophile and you're happy with that label, fine. But I don't think people think about the connotations before they drop a few hundred pounds on a pair.

People in this thread alone have stated multiple uses none of which have been to take inappropriate videos....

People can also take videos on their phone without you knowing.

I’ve been considering them for subtitles for hearing loss but am worried about being perceived as a twat.

Digerydont · 15/08/2026 17:19

Brilliant idea - film the yoofs in the bus station smoking weed and then send the clips to their schools.

Not a fan. I accept that there are a million fantastic uses for them, and there’s no putting the sauce back in the bottle now, but there will always be one overly entitled fucknut who thinks that it’s perfectly fine to record people without their knowledge or consent and stick the footage on the internet. The glasses are just a bit sneakier.

There are already documented cases of this - one where a creepy fuck was stopping attractive women on the pretext of asking for directions and filming their faces and bodies to upload to a site where his fellow creepy fucks (and there were plenty of them) could critique them, accompanied by the usual disgusting, rapey, degrading and misogynistic comments.

One of the women was tipped off that she was on there, but she had to battle with him (and I believe whichever platform he was using) to have the footage taken down, as it had been obtained entirely without her consent.

Every single development in almost any field will immediately be put to a sexualised and/or perverted use by men. Without fail.

Regardless of what positive use these things can be put to, until Meta give enough shits make the product tamper-proof, so that filming covertly becomes impossible (which they never will unless it starts to cost them money and bad PR, because they give precisely zero fucks about the safety and privacy of women or children), nothing can be done to prevent this. It’s quite simply the nature of predatory men and the way they poison the world around us.

I don’t understand the worry. The light comes on if someone is filming or taking a photo so you can tell. Much more transparent than a phone when you’re not sure if someone is taking a selfie or filming you.

Stage 1 - light. Stage 2 - no light. Get everyone used to them. Then add a feature that lets you stealth record. They're terrible and I hope people see them for what they are.

Yes, we do. Our laws just don't recognise it. And we definitely should have the right to not be recorded in public. That has nothing to do with privacy from other eyes, which cannot be helped.

Bunnyofhope · 15/08/2026 17:12

In some countries people do.

It's a complicated trade off between right to document (due to democratic importance) and right to privacy, but being able to film people without them being aware (except for law enforcement or journalism) is unacceptable IMO, and I'm not alone in that.

My view is we should have a right not to be covertly filmed. These glasses are intended to break down that boundary.

(ETA 'or journalism' above)

I am blind and not giving mine up for any one. They have changed my life. And my independence.

Question from an uninformed person - do they need to record to be useful/functional or do they just need to “see”? I’m assuming there is a difference between these two types of functions in terms of keeping and sharing footage but I don’t have a clue.

Victorius19 · 15/08/2026 17:55

I think the bit I'm uncomfortable with is that you can't consent to whether or not you're being filmed in someone's background. We've got CCTV at work and have had to put visible signs up warning people that they are being filmed, yet these glasses allow people to film anywhere, anytime and any way they want to.
