Government alert?!?!

Omg? First use of the government phone alerts, i think??

I haven’t read the whole thread, so someone else has probably already said this… the fires yesterday were thought to have started from bbqs at an A levels party. Teenagers do not read or watch the news, but they all have their phones in their hands. A great way to get the message to them all very quickly in my opinion.

To those saying it’s going to cool down tomorrow, yes it is but the ground isn’t going to be any less dry until we get some rain which isn’t forecast for another week in the south.

And to those saying the alert scared them. Is it just me that wandered round the kitchen for a bit wondering where the noise was coming from? If an alarm going off terrifies you, maybe that’s a cause for concern!

I turned off the horrendous noise (I have been laid low with a mild migraine) and then the message disappeared. I automatically did the same with the second, so didn't know what it was about until I read it on here. It should have the option to turn off the noise, but keep the message on for people to read it.

I live in a technically bilingual area of Wales, but Welsh is first on everything (as it should be, because we are in Wales... and I say that as an English person who moved here).

My phone didn't roar it emitted a loud beep. Lots of beeping going on here though as there's a lifeboat shout taking precedence over a govt alert.

We'd been out for a meal and was driving home when both phones went off

We where that startled,dp almost drove us into a hedge

Thankfully I had my phone in my bag,which was on my lap and could check that that's what it was

We’ve just had a third alert. Car radio via one mo ole then the other mobile. This is mad.

We had an utterknob burning building materials next to new housing and farmland, it was enormous and a fire engine was called , so yes when knobs (despite recent new) are lighting fires, alerts are important.

as farmers are. Currently using up their winter feed to feed livestock as there is no grass, wildfires could really impact our food resources.

My friend has a cochlear implant andd her phone is connected to it and directly into her ear. I messaged her after and checked she was ok. Can you imagine, must have jumped right out of her skin. To those saying it’s an over reaction? Have you even bothered to follow the news?! Would you want anyone you know to lose their whole house or life because someone thought it was ok to use a disposable BBQ’s and set fire to a literal tinder field of grass? It happens…too frequently. Doesn’t matter how careful you think you are, it’s selfish and uneccessary. The fire service asked the government to put the message out and, I think given the strain on the fire service personnel, putting their own lives at risk, this means far more than people that think they know better.

Um, wasn't this a thing that started during Covid?

I’m not sure I’d feel safe getting into a car with your DP. Really? Nearly drove in to a hedge because an alarm went off? What happens if they hear a siren or someone beeps at them?

French motorways have alerts on regarding smoking in the motorway and the risk of fire. Wouldn’t go amiss here either.

It wasn’t anything like a normal noise though. I’m not a jumpy person but the sound my phone made was mad and nearly gave me a heart attack. Maybe people have different settings or something ?

Probably by people who really shouldn't be driving in the first place if a moderately loud beep can cause them to have an accident.

It will keep busy in their final minutes.

No us too, all four of us in the house thought it was coming from the computer game. I was extremely confused when both kids picked up their phones, thought it must be game related 🤦

I've been more terrified by my husband just casually walking into the kitchen, I swear he creeps around like a ninja!

I'm not sure it was really necessary to send out an alert to tell people stuff that's fairly obvious although it did open up a good conversation with the kids about how it just takes a spark or some heat from something for it all to go up if things are dry enough.

I’d imagine the 20 families whose homes burned down found it really bad.

I’ve lived/live next to two parks and the amount of people setting fires literally on the grass not even using a disposable bbq is astounding.

We had several wildfires here last summer, it’s a LOT worse in terms of dryness here this year. I just keep expecting it go any day.

I thought Alexa (who is a general pain in the arse) had gone off piste!

DD’s phone went off first and thought she had changed her alarm tone for medication alert, then the rest of our went off. Not as loud as previous ones we’ve had.

I think it is sensible to do this at this point, it may just make a few people think twice and be a bit more careful. The pressure on the fire service must be huge currently and with the lack of rain forecast it’s hard to see it changing anytime soon.

I don't think it was a thing during Covid anyway. There was a specific app that people got alerts on (and not everyone installed it), and I am pretty sure we all had a text saying to stay at home.
This alert system in it's current form was not about then (but I am happy to be corrected)

Isn't it better to prevent an immediate risk to life?

I think the people taking such terms literally are the ones who need to get a grip.
