Slimming world supporting weight loss injections. Aibu?

I see that slimming world is now supporting and welcoming people to groups that do weight loss injections.

I feel that this is quite misleading and unfair to participants not doing injections. I have done slimming world years ago and now do weight loss injections only. I wouldn't feel right going to a group where some aren't doing jabs.

The whole slimmer of week is based on pounds only as well, not percentages. I feel the injections give a big advantage. Also, I dont think this works for a group of people.

Also, when I see huge losses for sw being posted I wonder if its the jabs.

I feel it's gone its all quite misleading and a bit unfair on people who still go to group.

What do you think?

It is very possible to lose a considerable amount of weight and keep it off using Slimming World plan. I stopped going to classes a year ago and am still the same weight.

hugasaurus · 14/08/2026 17:17

Unfortunately for many of these slimming organisations, there is now something that actually works so they’ve had to make changes.

How is it “unfair” on over weight people? .

How am I negatively impacted by some nice lady with 10lbs to lose joining my class?

The nice lady is doing exactly what you should do, nip the problem in the bud early.

I didn't say it was. I said if OP thinks it's unfair people are allowed with GLP1 then she must presumably think it's unfair there are slim people there?

Malasana · 14/08/2026 17:22

Firstly, it’s not a competition. Concentrate in your own day loss and who cares what anyone else is doing. Slimmer of the Week! What a crock of shit!

SW (and WW) have built their entire business model on people returning to lose the same weight again year after year. They teach you nothing about how to maintain your new healthy lifestyle. It’s not in their interests for people to lose the weight and be done. The same
people will be there year after year standing on those sodding scales and clapping each other!

Lose fat how you want to lose it but don’t compete with anyone else - it’s all nonsense.

The jabs have come up in discussion a few times in my group. As far as I know no one in my group is taking them and our consultant has talked about the side effects and pointed out that many people put the weight back on after stopping the jabs. On the other hand the SW plan helps with changing eating habits, which those who are on the jabs may need support with once they get to target.

The same in my group. The aim is to establish a better eating and maintenance plan for when the weight is off. I suppose it is slightly unfair for existing members who don't take medication but as another poster says, you join for the accountability.

How do you think WLI work then? They dont magically melt the fay away 🙄🙄

Really? Didn’t it used to be you could eat as much plain pasta and potatoes as you liked?

It’s not “as much potatoes and pasta” as you like. It never has been.

It’s not more than a third of your plate, and stop when you are full.

It’s encouraging potatoes, rice or pasta instead of bread. (And they encourage sweet potatoes, brown rice and brown pasta more than white too)

“Free food” doesnt mean “fill your boots”, it means you don’t have to strictly weigh like you do on WW. It’s meant to be easier for the average busy person to fit into their life.

WLIs work exactly like Slimming orgs. If you stick with it, exactly as prescribed, you lose weight.

If you stop, it quickly goes back on again.

The class I was at welcomed people on the jabs as it’s good to get into healthy habits for when you come off. They didn’t win slimmer of the week awards or anything like that though.

yeah but that’s hidden in the small print, they absolutely stated you can eat as much as you wish and you know it.

PresidentBarklett · 14/08/2026 17:34

I briefly did SW and WLI at the same time. I was upfront with the leader when I started taking the injection. She was very supportive but said that those on WLI were automatically not included in the running for the competitions like Slimmer of the Week/Month etc. I didn't have a problem with that as I'd be the first to say that WLI made it far easier to remain consistent through the week, which is, as a previous poster points out, what these prizes are really rewarding.

But if my experience is the overall SW approach I would say it isn't unfair, as the element of competition is completely removed.

I stopped SW after a few weeks on WLI as I found they helped me to automatically reach for healthy choices in a way that sitting in a circle hearing about how Jan went mad at the buffet on her cruise never did.

I don't know how she said that with a straight face considering some people are in and out of slimming clubs their whole lives 🤣

To be completely fair, WW and SW do both encourage you to continue attending once you get to target and allow you to do so free of charge (or at least they used to!) they have a whole maintenance program in the book. It’s just no one does it 😂

Well no, because just as with the WLI, people often put weight on when they stop.

This is why I don't know how she kept a straight face, like her club has proved to be any different in that regard 😁

Boreded · 14/08/2026 17:42

The jabs don’t make you lose weight, they just make it easier to stick to the diet.

weight loss isn’t a competition, and slimmer of the week means nothing, I could waterload one week before the weigh in, just 1 litre of water and leaving my phone in my pocket is 3lb…5lb if you could get 2 litres in by the weigh in. The following week, no phone and no water loading and you get 5lbs for free 🤷‍♀️

Slimming World, whilst not at all for me, is about bringing support to weight loss, not competition. People should celebrate the success of others, whether they need the jabs to stick to their diets or whether they can do it under their own steam…it makes no difference

ItsStillWork · 14/08/2026 17:44

It’s the same with ww. They now allow members to go to group on the jabs and have a GLP-1 plan.

they have to move with the times otherwise they will go bust.

i was unimpressed though with a member who slated the jabs as cheating etc for at least a year then suddenly went on them and now never shuts up about them!

the thing is i wouldn’t tell these groups im on the jabs. I used to love getting slimmer of the week and month numerous times about 15 years ago, no way would I miss out on that by telling them! 🤣

You can’t get slimmer of the week if you didn’t lose weight the week before.

YABU to go to Slimming World at all. Just throw your money in the rubbish, it’d be faster.

Well no, because just as with the WLI, people often put weight on when they stop.

This is why I don't know how she kept a straight face, like her club has proved to be any different in that regard 😁

But my point was, if people actually followed the maintenance program offered by SW and WW and carried on attending and weighing weekly, they probably wouldn’t regain the weight. But most people stop attending and monitoring their weight so put it on again. Essentially, people ignore the advice given by SW and WW once they’ve reached their target. If they followed the advice they’d probably maintain. It’s not the leader’s fault everyone ignores the final bit of advice! (I include myself in this group!!)

venmor · 14/08/2026 17:56

I think if slimmer of the week is the focus of a member they really don’t have it right. Surely the point is to lose weight, not be pitted against others? Who cares if sue lost 4lbs and you lost 3?

You can’t get slimmer of the week if you didn’t lose weight the week before.

I was waiting for this comment, I should have just made my example way more complex to avoid it since I’m going to have to do it now anyway…funny how you’ve not made comment on any of the other stuff I’ve said.

lets say you are in week 5 (so that you’ve been there long enough to not be new)

wk 5 - drink 2lt water before you go - this is 4.4lbs water loading - lose 1lb of fat but end up 3.4lbs up overall

wk 6 - drink 2lt water before you go - water load 4.4lb, water loss (last weeks water load) 4.4, fat loss 1lb - overall 1lb loss

wk 7 - don’t drink - water loss from last weeks load 4.4, fat loss 1lb - overall 5.4lbs lost

you get slimmer of the week.

What a waste of my time having to explain this, but there you go. Easy to manipulate the slimmer of the week if you wanted. Also slimmer of the week is a crock of shit, to win it you have to have a ‘fluctuation’ as well as a good loss. To lose 1lb of fat you need to create a deficit of 3500 calories, to lose the 5 you would need for SOW that is a deficit of 17,500 calories…not normal or vaguely achievable without a fluctuation of contents in your digestive system.

Does anyone really have a 3 week plan to win slimmer of the week?!?? Surely no one has intentionally water loaded for 2 weeks in order to get this in week 3 😂

I do agree with everything you say though tbf.

The fact that people don't follow the plan long term is why the leader was wrong to say the SW plan helps with changing eating habits. For the majority it doesn't, or not for long anyway. It's not the leader's fault that human nature is the way it is, but it is her fault to either not know or try and cover up that SW doesn't sustainably change people's eating habits.

Backedoffhackedoff · 14/08/2026 18:09

Every weight loss business has had to pivot to make themselves needed in the face of WLI. This is why PTs have started getting hysterical about Muscle loss and protein on social media- they have nothing else to add to the weight loss conversation.

fair and unfair doesn’t really come into something like slimming world to be honest, it’s not that deep. Loads of people love it, loads vocally hate it, most people don’t give it a thought.
