I need all my children to go back to University or school.
The eldest has been off since May and although she has a job she is just here a lot.
All of them have boyfriends and friends and they all eat and drink so much. I’m never alone. I miss being alone in my house.
Sometimes there is no where to sit because of all the children and the boyfriends.

I’ve taken to driving the long way home from work - so I can be alone for a bit longer.
They’re all lovely, kind and considerate and I know I’m awful because obviously I decided to have them but why can’t they sometimes all go out at the same time?!

Sometimes I’ll be watching TV or reading a book and one will arrive for a chat or to catch up. Isn’t that lovely? They want to see how I am or ask me about something. But I don’t want to talk.

Also why can’t people now just have toast, cereal or a bloody sandwich? Someone is always making a yogurt bowl or overnight oats. They make complicated salads and one basic meal turns into a whole kitchen of chaos.
I might book a night in a hotel.

Tell them this. Tell them you need some peace so no friends or boyfriends round for X nights. Why are adults so afraid to just bloody parent these days.

And tell them to get back in the kitchen and clean up.

Peonies12 · 13/08/2026 15:09

You tell them. Why are you letting them overrun your home. They clean up. Stop buying them food.
Boyfriends are limited to a certain number of days/evenings per week. Why aren't they going out and why aren't they all out working full time?
have a mandatory 1 evening per week where they must all go out so you get one quiet evening.

It’s their home too…

Although a mum needs some peace evening once a week does sound like a good idea!

Teeheehee1579 · 13/08/2026 15:12

I feel you OP - mine are younger but one just finished GCSE’s so has been home since June and the rest since the school broke up. I want the house back and some peace and quiet!!!!

Americanstyle · 13/08/2026 15:15

Trust me… one day, you’ll look back on these times so fondly; when they’ve all flown the nest and are busy with their own lives and you’ll wonder where the time went - or maybe you’ll be getting there bunting out when they do finally leave and emigrate to Australia 😁

ilovesooty · 13/08/2026 15:16

Tell them not to hog the kitchen and create chaos. If they're interrupting your peace tell them you need some space. Limit visitors. Why should you feel like an intruder in your house?

dottiedodah · 13/08/2026 15:40

Do they not go to their BF/GF homes at all? Why are they always at yours! Say nicely that they can come at WE/ say and Wednesdays .However Thursday Mon and Tuesdays they are at their BF homes .That is fair .say you are tired from work when you get in

I am living this at the moment too. We’ve told dd aged 23 that her boyfriend can only stay over one night a week (she spends another night at his). Otherwise everyone just takes over and it doesn’t feel like I can relax anymore. If she wants to see him more than this (he’s allowed to come over, just not stay over) they need to be looking at getting their own place.

Noodles1234 · 13/08/2026 19:16

It’s just you’ve lived on your own for too long, you’ve got used to it. This happens to divorced people too. It is normal to want your own time and maybe find a way to navigate this, is your bedroom a refuge with a tv and lots of fancy cushions? I would just say just be careful it doesn’t overtake your life that you forget to look for the positives in people wanting to see you. It is easy to become a grouch.

Packofsix · 13/08/2026 19:25

Perhaps try being the grown up and telling them that boyfriends are limited to one night a week and that if they want to see them more, to go to the boyfriends house. And to clean up after themselves. Simple

summersunnydays · 13/08/2026 19:26

Snap. I feel your pain. Uni holidays are looonnnggg! I love my DCs dearly but I’m ready for some peace, a cheaper food shop and a clean kitchen! Last night DS was making a fry up for supper at 11pm!!!!

clamshell24 · 13/08/2026 19:27

And the fridge! Nothing is sacred!

AntiHop · 13/08/2026 19:27

How many kids do you have?

Enoughofpeopleenough · 13/08/2026 19:30

Tell them you need a few days without boyfriends coming over and put in boundaries that if they use the kitchen, they make it spotless afterwards. Allocate a room that they can't come in where you can read your book, watch a film, sew etc.

And yeah, book a night in a hotel for a bit of a break.

bestbefore · 13/08/2026 19:31

You’ll miss them when they’ve gone! I do get it though..😬

BuildbyNumbere · 13/08/2026 19:36

Next time tell them not to come home as they are not welcome and you want to be on your own.

SleeptightEvangeline · 13/08/2026 19:42

My ds25 has been here all week because his Fiancée is away. I swear to God that boy can’t leave a single thing uneaten! He’s gets in from work. “Carbs up” and goes out for a run. Comes back and eats like King Henry. He admits he doesn’t eat this way at their house, but it’s “nicer” (aka free) here. He’s joining his fiancée tomorrow on hols. I’m not sorry!

Yes, that's the obvious solution.
As soon as you can, sell the house and buy a one bedroomed flat.
Better still, move away completely and don't given them a forwarding address.

Better yet, OP should fake her own death - something to think about 🤭.

I love moderate responses .

Yes! Faking her own death is not a bad idea. She could just change her name and deny that they are her offspring.

OriginalUsername2 · 13/08/2026 20:27

There’s a lot to be positive about here, but I get it. If I were you I’d let them know how you feel and get a weekly night to yourself or make your bedroom an off- limits haven for when you need peace. No knocking at the door allowed!

No I enjoy having my house to myself I like seeing them all for a few hours but glad to get a big of peace

Barnowls · 13/08/2026 20:34

Totally hear you!! I long to have the house to myself. But I also know I'll miss DD like crazy when she's back at uni. Just like I quite look forward to weekends when DS is at his Dad's, but then start fretting and missing him by 10pm on Friday 😅

jay55 · 13/08/2026 20:37

Book the hotel. Have a bath. Enjoy the aircon. Eat some fancy bits and enjoy the quiet.
