I need all my children to go back to University or school.
The eldest has been off since May and although she has a job she is just here a lot.
All of them have boyfriends and friends and they all eat and drink so much. I’m never alone. I miss being alone in my house.
Sometimes there is no where to sit because of all the children and the boyfriends.

I’ve taken to driving the long way home from work - so I can be alone for a bit longer.
They’re all lovely, kind and considerate and I know I’m awful because obviously I decided to have them but why can’t they sometimes all go out at the same time?!

Sometimes I’ll be watching TV or reading a book and one will arrive for a chat or to catch up. Isn’t that lovely? They want to see how I am or ask me about something. But I don’t want to talk.

Also why can’t people now just have toast, cereal or a bloody sandwich? Someone is always making a yogurt bowl or overnight oats. They make complicated salads and one basic meal turns into a whole kitchen of chaos.
I might book a night in a hotel.

Ha! I hear you. My youngest left school (bar his 3 exams) on 2 April! College FINALLY starts on 24 August. His brother has been home since he had to vacate halls at the end of May. Not even sure when Uni is back! Another month or so? Bring it on

FairViewRosie25 · 13/08/2026 20:41

Wish my daughter was home. She came back last week after Swedish comicon but went back after a week to her house. Can’t actually see her coming home till Christmas now 🥲

It's awful, isn't it? I missed mine so much, I didn't like to look in their bedrooms! You know you've raised independentl adults, but it's bittersweet.

I'm sympathise. With two young adults dds that was me last summer. The kitchen was never clear as there was no defined breakfast and lunch and one bowl or plate used for each. The eldest has left home now so it's got a bit better.

Of course, I am sure you are proud that they can put healthy food together and they like to chat to you, but you'll still be proud when they are doing it in a space other than yours 😄

sparrowsandfinches · 13/08/2026 20:57

Sympathy here.

My poor DH is very unwell and it’s awful but here’s here ALL of the time and it’s been very stifling.

I don’t think it’s a parenting issue either - you want them to feel comfortable at home which is totally understandable

AhMh67 · 13/08/2026 21:24

Don't have an endless supply of food. If there is nothing to eat they will go out.

Theextraordinaryisintheordinary · 13/08/2026 21:27

Same here. They all come here because they like the fact it’s relaxed but after a long day I need the silence.

friedaklein · 13/08/2026 21:29

I just dont allow boyfriends or girlfriends to stay over.
Easy.

pollyglot · 13/08/2026 21:34

Embrace it, enjoy it. Before you know it, the house will be empty. Too empty. Quiet as a tomb. They'll be off, living in Australia with their children, and you might see them once a year if you're very lucky.

My ds25 has been here all week because his Fiancée is away. I swear to God that boy can’t leave a single thing uneaten! He’s gets in from work. “Carbs up” and goes out for a run. Comes back and eats like King Henry. He admits he doesn’t eat this way at their house, but it’s “nicer” (aka free) here. He’s joining his fiancée tomorrow on hols. I’m not sorry!

This actually made me crack up! 'Carbs up' and 'King Henry' lol lol

I needed the laugh as i feel like the OP and my kids are younger so I haven't seen the half of it.

My eldest has been off since may after doing GCSEs and thinks it's her god given right to have a 'great summer'... everyone else just comes and goes, inviting people as they please and when they are asked to pull their weight just roll their eyes. Can't wait for September tbh!

Washingforweeks · 13/08/2026 21:36

I feel this sometimes. Just crave the silence so much and peace. But it won’t last forever xx

change the locks and when they all come back knocking on the door pretend you have no clue who they are

Lentilcakes · 13/08/2026 21:47

Wait til they descend on you after they’ve graduated! 😂 👿
Seriously though, put some ground rules in place and say you need your own space too. It’d drive me mad if gfs were here all the time!

Oh for sure. Last week after the cleaner finished in the kitchen I made a v quick lunch (I wfh), then DCs come down and decide to cook up a storm (one was off from work and the other is job hunting after uni). What was the point of the clean? I have strict instructions for the kitchen to be left as they found it.

Itsa10fromLen · 13/08/2026 22:02

Those of you saying she’ll miss it when they’re gone. I don’t, just saying. And it’s been a while ha.

I never have and never will. It’s is their home too but I do not want people in my home that stop me feeling comfortable.

Packofsix · 13/08/2026 19:25

Perhaps try being the grown up and telling them that boyfriends are limited to one night a week and that if they want to see them more, to go to the boyfriends house. And to clean up after themselves. Simple

Agree. It's your house and you deserve to have some privacy, peace and quiet occasionally away from non family members @Treetreetreetree

clamshell24 · 13/08/2026 19:27

And the fridge! Nothing is sacred!

They are like locusts, working their way through the food, leaving a trail of dirty plates and cups in their wake!!!

Squizzletwist · 13/08/2026 22:27

You are so blessed to have such a vibrant household where your kids actually want to be and totally get he noise and chaos but Ken day they won’t be there they will be married in their own homes with their own children and you will miss them. Some parents would loved to hear the voices of their children but they will never hear them again, not long now till they go back and in the meantime then your bedroom into a secret bliss out a lock on the door for those quiet moments you need for now. Bedrooms being used now won’t be needed or used one day and the. What’s the point. In I miss my kids because when you had them they were too noisy and chaotic - don’t wish for something that may not become permanent- hugs and best wishes keep smiling not long to go mow

Greentea4 · 13/08/2026 22:27

Can you change your perspective and see it as such a blessing? You maybe able to do this if you get some time alone, so there is balance. Currently you are stressed and overwhelmed..
Go out more to do quality things on your own. Put a notice on your bedroom door saying don't disturb. Explain when that's there you just need your space. No judgement on them.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 13/08/2026 22:30

Just change the locks. It takes 5 minutes.

Banannanana · 14/08/2026 01:05

Is it not their home too?

Mollymaid64 · 14/08/2026 01:18

Not helpful but I feel your pain. It's the parking wars that do it for me 😀
I look forward to the day when i can just psrk on my drive and walk to the front door without having to squeeze past their csrs with a load of shopping

Voneska · 14/08/2026 01:46

You are in a house, its a beautiful house, the tv is on- but on mute. Your children are around you but in another location. For now, you have the house to yourself, you are chilling, so laid back and scrolling on your phone. There's a few things that need attending to like : watering plants, writings some letters , checking Emails but no rush. For now: you have the house, the time, your leisure. All these things will happen ONE DAY. You just have to be patient.

Treetreetreetree · 14/08/2026 06:33

I have 4 kids. I've told them that all the boyfriends need to be gone all of next week. I've done no shopping because it's been too hot so today they will have to eat toast.
I know I'll miss them when they're gone but I only want a day.
I've booked two nights away at the end of the month so I'm excited for that.
