Do you hang your undies on the washing line?

Just that really.

I had a friend round for a cup of tea and as I was hanging up my washing she was horrified I was putting up my undies (just basic M&S black knickers, nothing out of the ordinary!) and said she always hangs her delicates inside as she "doesn't think her neighbours want to see that".

Am I the weird one??

Everything gets hung out. If I'm in a hurry and it's warm, the underwear may get spread out on the trampoline instead...

letshavetea · 12/08/2026 22:04

I hang mine indoors on the airer as they’re fairly delicate and I don’t like peg marks.
Same with clothes and bras. Husband pegs his out on the line!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/08/2026 22:05

No - I put them on a rack on the radiator. DP’s boxers go out, and my bras, I just don’t put knickers out.

What do those with a fear of underwear do when walking through supermarkets?

Do they faint when they pass the knickers aisle?

Do they cover their husband and sons eyes in case they suddenly lunge away from the tomatoes and into the bras?

If you don't want your own underwear on the line - fine, but keep your (batshit) opinions to yourself - your neighbours have no obligation to prevent your menfolk from thinking salacious thoughts when they see granny pants.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 12/08/2026 22:11

I hang mine on the IKEA thingy for socks so they whirl around in the breeze.

NotAnotherScarf · 12/08/2026 22:11

I think I've seen this thread before...

Dontevenlookatme · 12/08/2026 22:17

I hang undies on an IKEA octopus. They get dried outside but they don’t look quite so obviously underwearish.

Rollergirl79 · 12/08/2026 22:18

Yes I hang my underwear on the washing line, but then I don't have any neighbours. At my previous house I would put them out on a clothes horse but out of sight from neighbours. I love putting my big granny pants on the line now and not having to worry about anyone seeing them!

hiredandsqueak · 12/08/2026 22:19

I hang everything out. Socks and underwear are hung on the bit of the line that isn't overlooked though.

AliTheMinx · 12/08/2026 22:30

YANBU. I hang everything out. Don't see the problem with it, but I have a friend who thinks I am mad and hangs her underwear inside too...

PawsForTea · 12/08/2026 22:38

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/08/2026 11:30

They go on the clothes horse outside. I doubt my neighbours look or care. And I mean, if we really want to put a lot of thought into it, perhaps if you never hang your laundered underwear out for anyone to see, your neighbours assume you simply never wear any and refer to you as “No Knickers Pam” to themselves.

Edited

Love this - "No knickers Pam' lmao

Why?

This is 2026 not 1926.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 12/08/2026 22:48

OP you missed a fantastic opportunity to be horrified right back and tell her all her neighbours must think she goes commando! 😂

I hang mine on the line - and it's a long line not a rotary one so they're not even in the middle. I figure if anyone is actually looking at them then that's definitely a them problem. What my pants do when I'm not wearing them is none of my business. Just like whatever happens under the fridge.

Pollymollydolly · 12/08/2026 22:49

sweetpickle2 · 12/08/2026 12:05

Can the people who don't hang theirs outside explain why??

I don’t - because I’m lazy and can’t be arsed with hanging underwear and socks on the line, it takes forever! I wash undies and socks together, so a full load, then feck them in the dryer.

God forbid our small domestic necessary actions might make men ‘uncomfortable’ 🙄 If only the world of men gave one iota of a shit about making women uncomfortable in every. single. sphere. of. life.

Wake up to your own internalised misogny 👏🏻👏🏻

I think that both of us will just have to agree that we both have differing standards of privacy, dignity and modesty. You may prefer to wave your private undergarments at half mast to entice all of the neighbourhood men, but I prefer to keep mine drying indoors, away from lascivious glances. I don't want to give my neighbours the wrong impression about my husband and I, we are respectable people and not slovenly heathens or- god forbid- swingers!

Stressedoutmummyof3 · 12/08/2026 22:53

My mum always used to hang them on the inside of the washing line and then put larger clothes like t shirts or whatever on the outside of the washing line so they were out but not really visible.
I just put everything on the line as it comes out of the basket. I assume my neighbours are not too offended by the sight of underwear. I never even think to look what is on other people's washing line.

2Rebecca · 12/08/2026 22:55

Some people are weirdly coy about their knickers

WatchingTheStarsFromMyHammock · 12/08/2026 23:01

Yes, but I put underwear in the middle of my whiryline and put larger garments, or sheets and towels on the outer edges, so it obscures the view of the things in the middle, especially if I have washing on all four sides, which I tend to do so that things are spaced out.

BCBird · 12/08/2026 23:04

I recently moved. The back garden is open view for all and sundry. I held off for about 3 months then started doing it. At my previous home it was more enclosed so not an issue.

BCBird · 12/08/2026 23:06

My reasons for being reluctant are to do with me being uncomfortable not anyone else

caringcarer · 12/08/2026 23:06

I don't have a wShing line. I've got a massive cricket net in garden. I buy knickers a size big and wash then throw in the dryer.

Have you watched this?

I put them on the maid inside. Don't like them on the line. This is not something I have picked up from my mum because she hangs them out.

Doesn't your maid complain?

Thestealer · 13/08/2026 13:43

I hang mine on the octopus thingie. Think mine came from Home Bargains. DH had someone come round to buy something the other day and they were standing chatting in the garden while my sturdy undies were blowing in the breeze. Did I care? no.

iloveanearlynight · 13/08/2026 13:51

I live in a flat, communal washing lines and I don't want my undies viewed by others. I always hang them inside.
