Do you hang your undies on the washing line?

Just that really.

I had a friend round for a cup of tea and as I was hanging up my washing she was horrified I was putting up my undies (just basic M&S black knickers, nothing out of the ordinary!) and said she always hangs her delicates inside as she "doesn't think her neighbours want to see that".

Am I the weird one??

My Nan used to say that if you don’t hang them out, the neighbours might think you don’t wear any…..😄

Totaldramallama · 12/08/2026 13:59

Yes I hang everything out, including washable period pads, but neighbours can't really see in my garden unless they were really trying

SeriousTissues · 12/08/2026 14:08

Yes, everything goes on the line.

I have a couple of clothes airers I use in the garden, they have multiple layers and I always put my underwear on the bottom layer because it’s lower to the ground so most other stuff would drag on the floor but it does also shield them from prying eyes 😂 not that I’m bothered, they’re the same as the ops, black M&S boring pants, not scandalous tiny things!
When I was a 16yo teenager living at home someone broke in to my mums garden and stole all my underwear from the washing line which was absolutely gross. Best case scenario someone was very poor and needed my push up bras and thongs for themselves/their own daughter. But I suspect it was not this scenario 🤮

Ugh, maybe that's where it comes from, from pervs stealing women's laundry. That would put me off hanging them outside too.

wishingonastar101 · 12/08/2026 14:35

white laundry on the line in the sun - dark laundry on the wrack round the side of the house (in the shade).

OnlyUsername · 12/08/2026 14:37

Yes. I wear nice undies in matching sets, I want to get my money's worth.

Hotafternoon · 12/08/2026 14:39

I have builders next door so only hang washing out when they've gone. So much dust, debris and sawdust flying about, I don't want that on or in my pants.

Always hang underwear inside on rotary line, everything else goes outside.

StripyHorse · 12/08/2026 11:22

I put them on the maid inside. Don't like them on the line. This is not something I have picked up from my mum because she hangs them out.

I just tried this but she insisted we would have to pay her more. Not sure she’s being reasonable?

RampantIvy · 12/08/2026 14:44

Crikey!

This is 2026, not 1926. People are being ridiculous. Of course I hang out underwear.

Why are there so many prudes about drying underwear outside?

If you don't hang it on the line maybe your neighbour will get excited at the thought that you don't wear any.

Missey85 · 12/08/2026 14:51

Yes 😊 I don't care who sees them 🤷 it's just undies

PeasOff · 12/08/2026 14:54

STTE and will catch up.

Complete non issue - everyone in my households underwear is hung outside.

It's giving Mrs Bucket being precious over it.

HappilyDivorced89 · 12/08/2026 14:56

I hang all my clothes outside when the weather calls for it. I feel quite proud hanging up my leopard print undies...why shouldn't I?

When you buy underwear from the shop, do you keep it hidden? If there's no self-service desk and you have to hand it to someone behind the till, what do you do then?

Nobody cares! We all wear underwear!
For those asking about not seeing poos etc...why are you drying clothes with poos or poo stains on them anyway? Throw them in for another wash!

hahabahbag · 12/08/2026 14:58

Everything on the line, even reusable period pads. Nobody cares!

RobertaFirmino · 12/08/2026 15:02

Yes, I'm happy to hang knickers out on the line. Reusable go outside too, but laid flat rather than hung, as a PP said, the sun is the best thing for them.

Not understanding hyperbole is very strange to me.

I don't understand, do you mean she wasn't horrified and you've just made this up?

dottydaily · 12/08/2026 15:22

i hand them out but i am aware of many who do not.

DetailRedacted · 12/08/2026 15:43

I not only hang them outside on the whirligig but - brace yourselves - I hang them on the very outermost lines with longer items on the inside 😱😱😱

Icecreamandcoffee · 12/08/2026 15:55

Everything goes out here. Everyone's Knickers, period underwear and reusable pads, nappies, nappy liners, boxers.

I don't even hide them because the wife of a neighbour who backs onto us actually complained to the neighbours on all sides that her husband didn't like seeing washing on the line, especially underwear as it made him uncomfortable. Said husband actually does not care because I actually mentioned it to him in a jokey way and he was baffled - I don't think he even noticed there was washing on the line. Poor man was a topic of conversation for a week on the street WhatsApp and several neighbours thought he was a Herbert for a bit. They moved up from the south for cheap housing during COVID and were apparently horrified that people up north dry all their washing outside. Apparently it's not a thing down in Surrey 😂. Everyone has tumble dryers down there and tumble dries everything. I just told her it's what we do up here as we are all poor hence the cheap houses and they will get used to it 😁. I know everyone else surrounding them also just eye rolled and they also all openly hang all their underwear on the line. In fact most of us surrounding them did it more just for a laugh 😂.

Good grief, was your friend visiting from 1872? What a thing to worry about, I've never given a moments thought to what hangs on my washing line and I've never looked at what's on my neighbours lines either.

RedRiverShore6 · 12/08/2026 20:41

Yes on one of those octopus things

FairViewRosie25 · 12/08/2026 20:43

Underwear socks towels go in the dryer everything else on the line

Liverpoolxxx · 12/08/2026 20:50

8TinyToeBeans · 12/08/2026 11:21

I hang everything on the line, apart from washable period pads, I draw the line there!

That was my plan. First time I wanted them we had friends coming. I planned to whip the pads out of the machine and hide them on the radiator in my room.

Got home to find dp had gone home at lunchtime and hung them outside, on the line our friends, who had already arrived, had walked past to get to the house. They've gone on the line ever since (and the sun bleaches them for me).

(Turns out DP thought they were something to do with the animals but would have done the same thing regardless.)

Clydebuilt · 12/08/2026 20:54

Yes…our underwear gets hung out!

When I had periods mine went on the line!

Specialneedsnightmare · 12/08/2026 21:00

No I dry underwear inside. I'm in a flat and share a washing line with other households so I would feel funny about having my knickers and period pants on display.
