Do you hang your undies on the washing line?

Just that really.

I had a friend round for a cup of tea and as I was hanging up my washing she was horrified I was putting up my undies (just basic M&S black knickers, nothing out of the ordinary!) and said she always hangs her delicates inside as she "doesn't think her neighbours want to see that".

Am I the weird one??

Genuinely couldn't care less about people seeing my underwear on the line. Although I do hang any that have seen better days down the less noticeable end... My scruffies are the most comfortable!

Despite both neighbours either side of me having close back yards to me, I couldn't tell you if they hang theirs out, boxers I've definitely seen as they hang across like flags on the line but I simply just don't notice or care. I'm not going to go out of my way to give myself more work when I can have it done in the clip of a peg with all the rest.

We have a small garden with a rotary washing line. Everything gets hung out including washable period pants but smalls go on the inside of the line, both so the neighbours can’t get a Birds Eye view and to get larger pieces on the outside so they will dry better.

FourEyesGood · 12/08/2026 12:31

We have a shared access back yard, and yes, underwear gets hung on the line like everything else. If the neighbours or delivery people find out we wear clean pants, I’m sure they’ll learn to accept this.

UniquePinkSwan · 12/08/2026 12:31

No but I never hang out washing.

2ndHandLou · 12/08/2026 12:33

Out of interest why do so many posters on here have friends who have extreme reactions to things?

So many threads where friends are shocked, horrified, amazed etc

I can't remember a time when I or anybody my friends over-reacted to normal everyday things. It's very strange to me

The devil laughs at salt, displaying your undergarments like a flag of sin is far more enticing to him.

So the devil comes in on your underwear? That Kind of makes sense.....

Thought it was just me that thought this, its weird

I have no issue flashing my knickers at anyone

PenandPip · 12/08/2026 12:44

I hang mine out and the rest of the families. Next door neighbour has never hung her knickers out. I've seen the husbands boxers though.

DeanGaffneysCumFace · 12/08/2026 12:44

As an A list celebrity, I cannot hang my grundies out on the line as all of my adoring fans would steal them, leaving me with none to tuck my cocktail sausage into.

DorsetMermaid · 12/08/2026 12:45

We hang everything out on the line.
Years ago my DH had some Christmas boxer shorts stolen from the line. It's the only bad underwear drying thing that's ever happened to us in 40 years of marriage and it didn't put us off.

namechange6766333545544 · 12/08/2026 12:46

I don’t hang mine out. Our washing line is very visible to a busy footpath and i don’t want people to see my underwear. That’s just my boundary and it’s what I’m comfortable with.

Wingingit73 · 12/08/2026 12:47

We all wear underwear. She's strange.

MajorProcrastination · 12/08/2026 12:47

You are not the weird one!

I am not ashamed to wear knickers. It's normal to wear underwear.
I am not ashamed that my neighbours might see proof that I wash my knickers. It's normal and preferable to clean your pants.
My neighbours shouldn't be paying attention to what's on my washing line.

cinquanta · 12/08/2026 12:47

I regard myself as fairly laid back with most things, but I don’t hang my knickers on the line.

I quite often have chats with my neighbours over the garden wall and I would feel a bit self conscious with my smalls dangling in the background.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 12/08/2026 12:48

Yes, I wouldn't deny my neighbours the pleasure.

We also all have poos but i don’t want anyone to see my poos. It’s not weird to have boundaries.

CeeJay81 · 12/08/2026 12:50

Yep and so do my neighbours(a couple in their 70s). We have a low wall, so no privacy in our garden but I dont care and I'm pretty sure they don't either. We just want the washing dry.

Tryagain26 · 12/08/2026 12:51

I hang everything out. I doubt me neighbours peer into my garden to look at my washing!

Not understanding hyperbole is very strange to me.

I had never thought not to. But will now be watching to see who is ogling my washing from the trampoline next door.

emuloc · 12/08/2026 13:03

No, never.

Silverbirchleaf · 12/08/2026 13:04

DramaAlpaca · 12/08/2026 11:28

I do. The neighbours can't see my washing line, but I put undies on the inside bits of the twirly-gig thing hidden behind the t-shirts just in case anyone is interested in my underwear ;)

Me too. Undies on the inside so hidden by T-shirts etc.

WearyAuldWumman · 12/08/2026 13:06

Your friend is weird.

lcakethereforeIam · 12/08/2026 13:12

Hang my undies out, gussets facing away from the neighbour (I do have some standards!), but I dry my bras inside. Partly because they're expensive if some pervert did nick 'em. Mostly because if the wind caught them...I'm under a flightpath and I'd hate to bring down a plane 😁

noonames · 12/08/2026 13:13

I don’t, but it’s because there isn’t usually room on the line for a whole wash, so small items (up to and including vests and shorts) go on the clothes horse and larger items on the line. If I can be arsed I’ll put the clothes horse outside.
