Do you hang your undies on the washing line?

Just that really.

I had a friend round for a cup of tea and as I was hanging up my washing she was horrified I was putting up my undies (just basic M&S black knickers, nothing out of the ordinary!) and said she always hangs her delicates inside as she "doesn't think her neighbours want to see that".

Am I the weird one??

What's all this about the devil?? Is this some British cultural thing that I've never picked up on? (am an immigrant so am intrigued).

I've never thought not to, period stuff, nappies and all! Esp. since sunlight is good to kill germs. But neighbours don't really have a good line of sight to my laundry either.

We also all have poos but i don’t want anyone to see my poos. It’s not weird to have boundaries.

Why though? Are you ashamed of your turds? Do you do rabbit droppings and not proper danger to shipping logs?

When we renovated our house we specifically built a cupboard to dry wet underwear in, it saves us any embarrassment from the neighbours seeing them. It's also a good way of stopping the devil from entering.

Love this, true or not 😂

Everything goes out.
I remember Mum being under strict instructions from Dad not to hang his long johns outside as he didn't want the neighbours to know he wore them !

allgoodhere783 · 12/08/2026 13:16

I remember a guy getting annoyed by seeing his female flatmate's laundry out in the open. I found that odd too. Can he not control himself when he sees a garment hanging out to dry?

LittleRobins · 12/08/2026 13:19

Yes everything goes out. Our neighbours don’t hang theirs out though so maybe we’re being judged?!

I helicopter mine over my head up and down the high street singing Gregorian chants to ensure the front and back bottom devils leave and fresh genital angels enter.

Its always worked for me and means they don’t have to be visible on the line in my back garden.

High Street? Full of toxic fumes.
Everybody knows you should only do this while walking through country fields.

F*ing skank.

muddyford · 12/08/2026 13:26

I always hang mine on the line. Our front faces south so in the winter I sometimes put out a clothes horse in the sun. Except I handwashed my sports bras and put them out there and forgot. Only remembered when I was saying goodbye to our priest and noticed them. He's young enough to be my son and didn't turn a hair!

Mine are like chocolate log cakes, so if someone does see them they might put them on a wooden board and attempt to slice them and serve the slices with cups of tea. That wouldn’t be healthy at all.

KoiTetra · 12/08/2026 13:39

I run round the garden holding them up hoping to wind dry them

Davros · 12/08/2026 13:43

It helps with knowing what time it is:
What’s the time? Half past nine
Hang your knickers on the line
Ten o’clock, take ‘em off
Put ‘em on a dirty cloff
When a copper comes along
Hurry up and put them on

BlibBlabBlob · 12/08/2026 13:45

Don't care if anyone sees my knickers drying on the line outside.

DO care if anyone sees my middle aged lumpy body actually wearing the knickers!

But the only thing on my line right now is actually DD's white reusable period pads. Because they need the sun to bleach them fully white again after use. She's an easily-embarrassed teenager, but it hasn't occurred even to her that this is unacceptable. Interested to hear that reusable pads (not pants) are where others draw the line!

JudyTeeny · 12/08/2026 13:46

No I certainly don't hang them on the line. What if a man saw them?
Seriously, yes, they dry so much better outside and anyway, nobody is interested in two 60-somethings' old fashioned undies. My mum used to be a bit coy about hers, she used to peg them in front of a sheet or something else large, so Mr Next door didn't see them. His wife had no such shyness, she hung her knee-length bloomers for all the world to see.

DefiantRabbit9 · 12/08/2026 13:47

You are not weird. She's got a serious case of main character syndrome if she thinks people are interested in her knickers.

No she is

MimiGC · 12/08/2026 13:50

No underwear on the line, ever. I’m not particularly prissy about it, I also don’t hang socks outside either. All the small stuff goes on the clothes horse inside, everything bigger outside. I love seeing big billowing sheets and towels hanging on my line.

Fansonmaximum · 12/08/2026 13:50

My washing line. My garden . My pants.

why would anyone waste anytime on what the neighbours might think?

we wear them. We wash them. We dry them.

there is nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed about.

Vaxtable · 12/08/2026 13:50

Yes I do. Most people wear them anyway plus they are clean

dont see the issue

If he's familiar with the Bible he'll have come across worse things.

BelleEpoque27 · 12/08/2026 13:52

Of course I do, they're only knickers 🙄

AnnaQuayRules · 12/08/2026 13:53

Of course I hang them out. Madness not to.

BebbanburgIsMine · 12/08/2026 13:55

No, I haven’t hung any underwear outside for about 15 or so years now.

I used to, then every single item (mine and my 2DDs) was stolen. Never hung it out ever again!

ProtectTransKids · 12/08/2026 13:55

Outside on the line for me.

My neighbours must think im a real slut.

TheChosenTwo · 12/08/2026 13:56

I have a couple of clothes airers I use in the garden, they have multiple layers and I always put my underwear on the bottom layer because it’s lower to the ground so most other stuff would drag on the floor but it does also shield them from prying eyes 😂 not that I’m bothered, they’re the same as the ops, black M&S boring pants, not scandalous tiny things!
When I was a 16yo teenager living at home someone broke in to my mums garden and stole all my underwear from the washing line which was absolutely gross. Best case scenario someone was very poor and needed my push up bras and thongs for themselves/their own daughter. But I suspect it was not this scenario 🤮

I had all my underwear stolen fron the line, I haven’t hung it out ever since!
