Would you judge a middle aged quiet couple playing cards in a pub rather than bigly conversing?

We're mid Fifties, been married together forever.

We're playing cards in a hotel lobby which we always do when we're away. Always happily but we don't really chat much.

If you were sitting chattingin a couple or bubbly in a group across from us, would you judge?

I feel a bit self-conscious that we're don't look as though we're having a companionable time.

We go away 2 or 3 times a month to nice places but don't sit and chatter, just sit in lobbies and pubs in the evening and get cards or backgammon out.

Lynn, these are quiet people.

Aibu to feel jusged?

Bigly conversing? Is that what Donald Trump does when he and Melania go to the pub?

Edited

I thought the same 😁

Whoops75 · 09/08/2026 20:48

Wouldn’t give it a second thought.

Soupdragon3 · 09/08/2026 20:49

Your time sounds wonderful. We have just returned from the pub after a very long walk and sat and read our books! Utter bliss. I don’t give two hoots what people think. That said, please share what card games you play. I am looking to expand our range of activities and we love uno, just slightly hard with just 2 of us.

Danhausenrocks · 09/08/2026 20:51

We’ve just got back k from holiday and spent all evenings just chilling in the bar playing cards. When I looked around there was about 5-6 families all doing exactly the same thing.

it was really lovely to see so many people just genuinely hanging out and chatting playing games rather than being glued to phones

We like chase the ace, sevens and bonk as good card games to play.

I'd judge, as to me it doesn't always mean to be negative.

I'd look over and think "I want a bit of what they've got right there"

It obviously makes you both happy and getting away a few times a month sounds wonderful, enjoy every moment.

DirtyBird · 09/08/2026 20:56

I’d be jealous honestly. The best relationship I’ve been in was one where we didn’t chat all the time. We just enjoyed being together, sharing the same space. There were no need for lots of words. Didn’t have to be “on” all the time. That was over 30 years ago and no other relationship had compared to it. I miss it.

Justme10 · 09/08/2026 20:57

I was in Greece recently and so many couples and families happily sitting playing cards including in the lobby. Encouraged me to get an uno deck and play with the kids during the evenings.

Nomorebullshitnotavailable · 09/08/2026 20:57

I said you were unreasonable but only because you shouldn’t give a crap what anyone is thinking if you’re having a good time (obviously presuming it’s not strip poker, in which case you are being unreasonable to play that in a hotel lobby).

itsgettingweird · 09/08/2026 21:02

DS and I always sit and play cards in bars, restaurants, trains, planes - even on the beach!

I don’t care what people think!

at least it’s interacting and not sat staring at separate screens!

Notateacheranymore · 09/08/2026 21:05

@Soupdragon3 Definitely sounds like you need travel Yahtzee.

Happyjoe · 09/08/2026 21:07

Don't think I've ever given two hoots about what strangers think of me. I barely care what my friends think of me! I am who I am.

You guys just do you. Enjoy your games, sounds fun too.

Bringemout · 09/08/2026 21:07

I’d think it was sweet, so many couples spend their time together staring at their respective phones. I’d assume you were a very happy couple tbh. We often carry a pack of cards too, nowt wrong with it.

We did this as a family in Spain a couple of weeks ago. We’d been out for food, then returned to the hotel, their entertainment was not our thing so we just played Uno with the kids (11 and 14) in the hotel lobby. Did it a couple of nights.

When you’re together 24/7, there’s not always stuff to talk about but it’s nice just to enjoy each others company.

We do this with ours, pack of UNO always in someone's bag.

XenoBitch · 09/08/2026 21:11

Not at all. Me and DP are middle aged (mid 40s, and 50s), and we play card games and the occasional board games when we are out.. be it a cafe or a pub.

LizandDerekGoals · 09/08/2026 21:17

Much better than sat ignoring each other on your phones. We always take uno, happy familes, card deck and top trumps,

CupidsPysche · 09/08/2026 21:17

We do that every trip so much so that we collect cards from resorts (our equivalent of fridge magnets if you like 😂)

RaspberryRiddle · 09/08/2026 21:17

I'm even less conversational as I take my knitting or crochet on holiday and craft in public!

ohyesiseethatnow · 09/08/2026 21:24

I think it sounds lovely.

Playing cards - totally fine. You don’t need to be chatting.

Sitting in hotel lobby though, you sound much more sociable than me.

I would play cards with hubby up in our room, or I would read a book. But I struggle with too much social interaction with strangers. I’d be happier in my room / bed!

Enjoy your trip x

Just had a Sunday lunch and lazy afternoon in a Lake District pub today. When we walked in after a brisk hike around the nearby lake and hill, there was a family sat playing a board game, 2 people reading, a big group of friends chatting, everyone else eating enormous Yorkshire puddings and roasts, and dogs lying sleeping all over the pub. It was, no lie, the best pub I've been to for a very long time. Great, friendly staff (who had a handful of treats for the dog the minute we walked in), and a brilliant chilled out atmosphere. I genuinely believe seeing people engage with others in all kinds of ways, including card games, makes for somewhere others want to be. Our kids went and found the board game shelf and we had a round of Scrabble whilst waiting for our food. One of the best Sundays we've had for a while.

Hankunamatata · 09/08/2026 21:26

Im away with my teens quite a bit due to their hobby. Me and youngest always play cards or small game to pass time.

lebin · 09/08/2026 21:26

I wouldn’t bat an eyelid. I think most people wouldn’t notice you at all, and those that did would think it’s nice.

Fansonmaximum · 09/08/2026 21:29

Why on earth are you wasting brain cells worrying about what others think?

if you like playing cards play cards.

if you like chatting away to each other do that.

why on earth are you worrying about others judging you for a normal activity?

if you were sacrificing children at your table : hell yes I would judge you but playing cards? I wouldn’t even notice let alone care .

don’t waste time worrying about others judging you - total and utter waste of time and energy.

Benmac · 09/08/2026 21:30

We have been married 47 years. Happy to sit in bars , lounges etc reading . Any comments we just say after all these years we can choose what to do.
Don't feel awkward.enjoy how close you are

Charlize43 · 09/08/2026 21:41

I probably wouldn't even notice you... unless there was money all over the table and the stakes were high, or if you were playing strip poker and were sitting there in various states of undress...
