‘Thigh gap’

givingupimdone · 09/08/2026 19:28

Bit random but do the youth of today still obsess about weight and having the much sought after ‘thigh gap’ ???

I hope not as it’s caused me a lifetime of troubled eating. I was born in the 80’s and teen in the 90’s

I think the objective these days is bigger thighs bigger arse to be honest.

milkhater · 09/08/2026 23:12

thigh gap is more about shape though, my mum has one despite my legs being slimmer. She has wider hips than me.

SusanSometimes · 09/08/2026 23:19

I guess I must have a thigh gap, though I've never thought of it in that way. I've lost four stone over the past year thanks to Mounjaro and I know it's shallow but the best thing about it is I no longer get chub rub and haven't needed to wear the dreaded long shorts under dresses this summer. I'm still a stone and a half overweight so I reckon it's down to body shape.

I have a 16 year old step daughter and I’d say yes but it’s not a thigh gap that she focuses on. It’s a small waist, bigger bum, flat stomach. She also spends a lot of time on keeping her skin nice and her hair routine takes up a lot of time. Shes beautiful (and if I’m being honest she knows it) but I do feel bad for her, she regularly turns down sweet treats and skips breakfast most days.

I think that’s really sad tbh.

montysmaw · 09/08/2026 23:21

They are all about the big arses and voluptuous thighs these days.
Hence the ridiculous scrunch bum leggings, butl lift leggings and even padded leggings.
The teens where I live are generally pretty hefty. Slim is definitely not the the norm .

It is really sad. She’s so beautiful but all of her friends are the same. I don’t remember being so obsessed with my looks at her age but maybe I was. Like I said she’s my stepdaughter so I don’t have any say on how’s she’s being brought up but if I did I wouldn’t have allowed social media.

Nohims · 09/08/2026 23:56

I have lost quite a bit of weight.and I have thigh gap didn't know what it was till dd told me.

I don't think its always linked to weight though I have seen people with thin legs who have been over weight.

SquirrelGG · 10/08/2026 00:28

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/08/2026 21:01

My DDs have never mentioned it. Fit and strong tends to be the ideal in the last few years rather than thin.

I never had a thigh gap even at BMI 19, I have narrow hips and muscly legs. I've never had chub rub though.

Edited

Oh thank goodness, I was beginning to think I was odd! I've never had a thigh gap, am slightly overweight, but have never had chub rub either.

canuckup · 10/08/2026 00:32

Depends on how wide your hips are. If you're slim hipped, you've pretty much no chance of a thigh gap

PickAChew · 10/08/2026 00:34

Morethanadecade · 09/08/2026 19:35

What is a thigh gap and why is it sought after?

It's what Barbie dolls have. In days gone by it was a sought after aesthetic, along with calves that look like you never needed to walk anywhere.

I am wide hipped (never been smaller than 14 on the bottom since I was 16), and have never had a thigh gap.

utahsainthood · 10/08/2026 00:57

I’m mid 40s and I’ve always had a thigh gap, I had no idea I had this or that it was a thing until a few years ago when I was on a local mums netball team and someone complimented me on it! I was bemused. It’s just my body shape. I also have a huge tummy after children so we can’t have everything.

Thecows · 10/08/2026 03:18

If

Sugarbuckley52 · 10/08/2026 03:22

Yes they obsess about it and being thin. I work with alot of 20 yr olds and have a teen niece. Crazy and sad it is.

I also have one, I'm tall and large boned, size 14, I weigh around 11 stones and it's just the way my bone structure is, I have reasonably big thighs, there are a lot of women thinner than me that have no gap, it is handy though as I never get that thigh rub that people get

That's interesting as I'm tall, 11 stone, big boned like you, but a size 10 with no thigh gap and no thigh rub either.

All I see OP are scrunch bums.

That's interesting as I'm also tall (5'7), 12 stone, chubby (not big boned), but a size 12/14 and have only just started to get chub rub now I'm at my biggest. One stone lighter and I've got a thigh gap and thick thighs. Strange how all bodies are different!

northernballer · 10/08/2026 20:45

No thigh gap but I do have visible collarbones which I think are also down to build rather than weight.

Someone told me about hip dips the other day and I wanted to give up to be honest, I mean who comes up with this shit?

JahanaraBegum · 10/08/2026 21:08

Is a thigh gap the same thing as that little diamond-shaped gap at the top of your thighs? Or are we talking thighs that don't touch? I have neither.

They sure are different. I'm the same height and weight as you and am a size 16. I might get into a 14 depending on the brand, but no way could I fit into anything in a 12! No chub rub though (and no thigh gap).

climbintheback · 10/08/2026 21:46

It was around in the 60s

likeitshard · 10/08/2026 22:00

Wow Iwould have on brand had that look been fashionable 30 years ago. Unfortunately it was all heroin chic back then

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 10/08/2026 22:11

I’m 55 and have lost stones and have a thigh gap and collarbones and the sensible me says “so what” the teenage me says “wow”. Magazines of the 80s had me 🤦🏻‍♀️. We are all poisoned.

It's so fascinating! We're the same, but not alike 😅.

Fizbosshoes · 10/08/2026 22:19

I remember a female teacher (unfavourably) comparing me to another (taller, thinner) girl at school when I was 11. The other girl had a thigh gap, I didnt. Ive only had one when I had an eating disorder.
DD is 20, she's never mentioned a thigh gap

The diamond shape.

I'm lucky not to have ever been bothered by it, or a big bum.
Was only ever interested in having dimples and would sit through class drilling my cheek with my finger 🤣.
