‘Thigh gap’

givingupimdone · 09/08/2026 19:28

Bit random but do the youth of today still obsess about weight and having the much sought after ‘thigh gap’ ???

I hope not as it’s caused me a lifetime of troubled eating. I was born in the 80’s and teen in the 90’s

Thighs isn't everything 👍

pomegranatescent · 09/08/2026 19:33

I don’t think they do… I think the latest body trend is to have a tiny waist, thick thighs and a peachy bum. It’s actually quite unobtainable for anyone unless you have the genetics, which is why you see young women wearing the scrunch shorts and doing everything to emphasise “that area”.
The Kim K effect.

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 09/08/2026 19:34

Thick thighs save lives, apparently.

this

i presume the thigh gap is the gap at the top of your legs where the join your body at the croch area.

i have fat thunder thighs so no gap, i can only dream of one….I dont care about fashion but i’d love to be a healthy weight again :-(

moonraker0 · 09/08/2026 20:02

As the mother of a 20 year old I can say they unfortunately still do. I think it will always be a thing but now there’s more emphasis on muscle definition as well.

Commonsenseperhaps · 09/08/2026 20:04

I have a thigh gap, it’s quite impressive but I have wide hips and my thighs aren’t small! and also cellulite. It’s just my shape it’s not always an indication of being too small

RedRiverShore6 · 09/08/2026 20:12

I also have one, I'm tall and large boned, size 14, I weigh around 11 stones and it's just the way my bone structure is, I have reasonably big thighs, there are a lot of women thinner than me that have no gap, it is handy though as I never get that thigh rub that people get

barefootcook · 09/08/2026 20:14

Why do think thighs save lives?

Me too. It doesnt really matter what my weight is it's just my body shape.

My dd is 16 and she has never mentioned 'thigh gaps', when it comes to weight and size she is a lot more chilled out than I was at her age thankfully. She doesn't seem to obsess over it at all she is very petite though and knows it so maybe it would be different if she wasn't.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 09/08/2026 20:21

Actual empowerment for women would include NGAF about this sort of thing.

Why do think thighs save lives?

Because they make us float better perhaps?

Same here. Even when I was 8 stone I did not have a high gap so it is never going to appear.

SusanChurchouse · 09/08/2026 20:32

I have narrow hips and a pouch of inner thigh flab so even at a size 8 I didn’t have a proper gap. Hence my collection of chub rub shorts!

My daughter also has tiny hips but has quite an athletic figure due to years of gymnastics training and I couldn’t honestly tell you if her thighs meet! She’s never mentioned it either. As PP have said, she seems to want a more round bum. In fact she has just bought shorts that seem designed to make your bum look bigger which is hilarious to me as someone who grew up with “does my bum look big in this?” In the 2020s they seem disappointed if the answer is no!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/08/2026 20:34

I thought it was desirable because you avoid chub rub.

What is a thigh gap and why is it sought after?

It is a gap between your thighs and it means that your thighs don’t rub together.

Which is a definite advantage in warm weather.

Why do think thighs save lives?

Maybe strong thigh muscles are a good indicator for strength and mobility/good general muscle mass as you age?

As for a thigh gap, I think as PPs have said, for most people it’s a body shape thing rather than a weight thing. I mean, obviously if you’re extremely thin you’ll have one regardless, but you can easily have someone who has a thigh gap but is larger than someone without one.

sodoffbeforemycupofcoff · 09/08/2026 20:36

I mean I used to want it but I wanted chocolate more so never achieved it.😆 I haven’t heard of thigh gap since I was a teen!

PurpleCoo · 09/08/2026 20:46

I haven't heard people talking about thigh gaps for years. They aren't all they are cracked up to be. If you try to balance stuff on your lap it falls between your legs 🤣

What on earth are thick thighs though? That sounds awful! I just hate the word thick... Do they mean muscular?

I disagree that you can't have small waist, peachy bum and muscular/larger thighs though. I'm 50, do lots of weights, squats and lunges, getting to do quite heavy weights now as well. I have a relatively small waist, very curvy perky glutes and my thighs look well toned. 21" circumference at 5'4 so definitely not skinny legs. I work hard to do this though, walk at least 5 miles most days, plus gym 4 times a week, often doubling up classes and combining a class with an hours swim.

I don’t want a thigh gap because of how it looks. I want it because I cant wear dresses or skirts or even swimming costumes by the pool without wearing shorts because my thighs rub together. I would rather not be uncomfortable, hot and in pain.

Thesillysocks · 09/08/2026 20:54

Child of the 80s here, still have my thigh gap, actually when I feel my thigh touch I know it means I have put on a bit of weight.

hugasaurus · 09/08/2026 20:57

It was one of the things when I lost weight that made me go ‘ooh!’. That and seeing my collarbone! It is useful not having them rubbing but it’s not something I thought of until my husband pointed it out. So I don’t think it’s really something people specifically aim for, just a by-product of losing weight sometimes.

ShutupLwren · 09/08/2026 20:57

Chub rub is awful but if I drop malteasers when sat down, they never escape.
It’s a double edged sword, being thick thighed.

Bringemout · 09/08/2026 20:58

Think it’s more in to have a curvy muscular shape, small waist defined legs and bum, thigh gaps are no longer an obsession. The best legs I have ever seen were quite muscular and shapely and that was fifteen years ago. I much prefer this body obsession tbh, at least it means young women are eating protein and trying to build muscle rather than the heroin chic stuff.
