‘Thigh gap’

givingupimdone · 09/08/2026 19:28

Bit random but do the youth of today still obsess about weight and having the much sought after ‘thigh gap’ ???

I hope not as it’s caused me a lifetime of troubled eating. I was born in the 80’s and teen in the 90’s

I don’t think young people care about body shape .

Idontjetwashthefucker · 09/08/2026 20:59

I now have a thigh gap after losing loads of weight, still got a bit to go but it's great not getting the chub rub anymore...still got biggish thighs but have wide hips

DeftGoldHedgehog · 09/08/2026 21:01

My DDs have never mentioned it. Fit and strong tends to be the ideal in the last few years rather than thin.

I never had a thigh gap even at BMI 19, I have narrow hips and muscly legs. I've never had chub rub though.

xOlive · 09/08/2026 21:01

I used to be obsessed with trying to get a thigh gap until I realised it’s mostly due to having wider hips/pelvis and not necessarily being thin.
Nowadays the trend is to have a tiny waist and massive bum (cheers Kim K).

LuckyHazelFox · 09/08/2026 21:07

I want mine back. Hopefully going to get it after starting Wegovy and strength training. Sick of the rub with sweating making it worse.

Nice one 👍

People of all ages will choose to obsess over lots of different things so I'm not sure it makes any difference.

I mean certainly not everyone obsessed over thigh gaps anyway 🤷‍♂️

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 09/08/2026 21:09

I understand that “hip dips” are now cause for concern, after listening to some much younger friends. I googled this new (to me) phenomenon and I’m not that much wiser.

monsterinme · 09/08/2026 21:10

I have a thigh gap in my 40s and so does my mum in her 80s it’s nothing to do with weight but it’s the positioning of your pelvis which is genetic.

Not always, I have one with narrow hips, but I’m a small size 6. If I put on weight my thighs start to touch.
Not to say that some people will have the gap even if not thin but not sure that’s the majority.

It’s more that the weight/size at which you’ll get a thigh gap depends on your genetics. Obviously everyone would get one at some point if their weight dropped enough, and everyone would lose it at some point if their weight increased enough. But those points are different for different people, and depend on your pelvis.

RobertaFirmino · 09/08/2026 21:59

I have the gap. I am scrawny and lanky and the gap just makes me look worse. It's one of the reasons I usually wear a skirt or dress.

Having said that, may I remind everybody that all legs, be they large or small, are actually beautiful. Think about what they do. How can they not be beautiful?

TheChosenTwo · 09/08/2026 22:11

I have had one for about a year, the upside of this being no more chub rub, these last 2 summers have been wonderful for no painful chafe or having to remember to use some roll on deodorant or add another sweaty later with tight shorts under a summer dress.
However no one would ever notice unless they see me at the gym as it’s the only place I wear leggings or you can see the shape of the top of my legs.
It wasn’t an aim, to develop a thigh gap, but it’s been a blessing in the warm weather - an unexpected bonus!

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/08/2026 22:15

I dream of a thigh gap, not because of fashion or peer pressure but because fat thighs have never and will never be attractive. I think the size of the gap probably is a genetic thing, there's a big difference between firm legs that happen to sit close together and flabby thighs that slap against each other all the time. That entire area gets over heated too especially in Summer.

ToadRage · 09/08/2026 22:19

Even when I was a healthy weight i never had the thigh gap. Tbh i never really wanted it.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 09/08/2026 22:22

I'm just thinking, if you obsess about a thigh gap you probably have little else to be critical of. Women will always find something negative but there's people who might be obese and hate their bodies so much they can't look at themselves, people who hate sections of their bodies, legs for example and are self conscious and dress to cover them up, and people who go around wearing half nothing because they know they are gorgeous but occasionally lament that their right baby toe doesn't perfectly match their left. Thigh gap obsession is much closer to the third example I think because it only becomes relevant when you are confident enough to wear very fitted clothing in the first place or happily walk around in a swimsuit.

XenoBitch · 09/08/2026 22:25

The only time I had a thigh gap was when I was about 6.
I remember wearing jeans as a child and getting annoyed by the "zip zip" sound made by my thighs rubbing together.
I was not a fat kid.. the combination of wide hips and how my legs align causing chub rub.

Child of the 80s here, still have my thigh gap, actually when I feel my thigh touch I know it means I have put on a bit of weight.

Same here
checking my thigh gap is my weight gain alert.

ToffeePennie · 09/08/2026 22:39

As an overweight (obese) woman I can tell you absolutely everyone is still obsessed with a thigh gap. I wish they weren’t but my doctor refuses to help me unless I loose weight but I can’t loose weight without any help…it’s a no win situation. My thighs rub together like crazy! I now have flesh coloured shorts to stop the chub rub.

I haven't heard people talking about thigh gaps for years. They aren't all they are cracked up to be. If you try to balance stuff on your lap it falls between your legs 🤣

What on earth are thick thighs though? That sounds awful! I just hate the word thick... Do they mean muscular?

I disagree that you can't have small waist, peachy bum and muscular/larger thighs though. I'm 50, do lots of weights, squats and lunges, getting to do quite heavy weights now as well. I have a relatively small waist, very curvy perky glutes and my thighs look well toned. 21" circumference at 5'4 so definitely not skinny legs. I work hard to do this though, walk at least 5 miles most days, plus gym 4 times a week, often doubling up classes and combining a class with an hours swim.

That’s nice. What do you do for fun?

What rubbish.

You don’t get to speak for others and what they are or aren't obsessed with.

fifySix82 · 09/08/2026 22:49

I have a 16 year old step daughter and I’d say yes but it’s not a thigh gap that she focuses on. It’s a small waist, bigger bum, flat stomach. She also spends a lot of time on keeping her skin nice and her hair routine takes up a lot of time. Shes beautiful (and if I’m being honest she knows it) but I do feel bad for her, she regularly turns down sweet treats and skips breakfast most days.

Kepler22B · 09/08/2026 22:54

I wish people would not call them chub rub shorts. Lots of people on here saying they didn’t have a tight gap even at a size 8. Some people’s thighs rub together regardless of size!

PollysKenwood · 09/08/2026 23:08

DD2 is 17 and got into going to the gym this year. The motivation seemed to be her feeling her legs were too thin and she wanted to increase muscle. She’s got a bit more muscle now than previously and she’s never mentioned a thigh gap. She needed to buy some new clothes to replace ones that now longer flit but she seems happy and enjoys going to the gym. I was a bit worried at first about where it could lead but so far it all seems positive.

I hope things are a bit better, I remember the mid 2000s celebrity gossip magazines that would have huge close up photos of celebs on the beach etc shaming them for their cellulite and ‘wobbles’ it was horrendous.
