Flying poorly (tomorrow) ?

So we fly first thing tomorrow on a family holiday (me, hubby and two kids <6).

A week ago I started with cold and have had horrid sinus/general cold symptoms. Went to the doctors got a steroid spray (they were thoroughly disinterested as I didn’t have a temperature) but the sinus pain was so bad I felt sick. The steroid spray did very little, I’ve been struggling all week. Doesn’t seem to be improving and awful post nasal drip (tmi sorry). I just feel rubbish but it’s been a week now usually I shake things off or they at least improve. I’ve spent today in bed covered in Vicks and felt awfully sick.

I said to hubby I didn’t think I’d manage it tomorrow. I struggle with my sinuses on planes at the best of times and it can be really painful. He looked at me like I was nuts because it’s ’just a cold’.

We have insurance but given I’m ’not that unwell’ and the doctors shrugged it off I doubt we’d be able to claim on it. Hubby thinks I’m at the end of it and will start to feel better in the next couple of days so should just push through. I do push through things quite well usually but I just feel grotty and so disappointed that it’s a week in and I’m still this rubbish!

You’re referring to some sinus irritation, we’re discussing full on sinusitis (which good doctors treat seriously)

Just get on the plain and go.

No evidence of full on sinusitis. Whatever that is.

I think it’s a bit harshto expect you to go if you’ve been so ill. you’ve been in bed all day. It’s horrible being ill on holiday and sinus infections really hurt . Not sure that flying is that good an idea either. Is it easy to access a dr where your holiday destination is? I’d definitely be trying to get to a walk in centre or pharmacy today.

The last time I had sinusitis with terrible pain I had an emergency appointment with an ENT doctor in France. He used two very long cotton buds on wooden sticks dipped in alcohol and stuck them way up my nose (sinuses) and left them there for 20 minutes. Instant relief. OMG.
Then gave me antibiotics.

Bad sinusitis (inflammation, infection) needs medical care and treatment. Doctor prescribed me the strongest steroids at risk of permanent hearing damage, doubt a general trip to the pharmacy would have sufficed.

If the lady feels she’s breathing in glass or her ears are congested, that’s an indicator to not fly.

My DH had this before we went to Prague. I would have supported him of he had decided not to go, tbh. But he was OK in the end. His ears did hurt more than usual on the flight but I think being abroad took his mind off the symptoms.

And no I don't think you should go the GP for a bloody cold.

No wonder people who actually need an appointment can't get one.

Maybe because your symptoms were different?

Sinusitis is not infectious and OP has had the cold for over a week so again would not be infectious.

Please, please do not get on an enclosed, sealed aluminium tube with a highly contagious illness, there could very well be immunocompromised people trying to enjoy a summer holiday. If they get something it could be seriously bad news.

Stop putting people off going to the GP. It’s not the general public ‘s fault that the NHS is disorganized and overrun

Don't miss your holiday for this. I've gone on holiday feeling like death warmed up before...once with a 4.5h solo flight, once on a camping trip to the Netherlands with the family that involved a 12 hour drive. Both times I felt much better within 24h of arriving and was glad I didn't cancel.

Test for Covid.
Make your decision based on those results.

Take decongestant tablets. I usually take them for flights because I usually get painful ears otherwise and I reckon they will help with your issues. But they are already in some cold remedies so watch you don’t take two products with them in accidentally.

A girl in my daughter’s class has Leukaemia and despite wearing a mask, alongside lots of precautions on both the parents’ part and measures taken by the airline to try keep them separate, they decided to take her to Disney in Paris for her Make a Wish trip and surprise surprise, an entire family got on with what sounded like colds and coughs and sure enough the day after, their DD was in intensive care in Paris.
So incredibly selfish
Edited to add that she made it thank god. Trip completely lost though.

And, for our family, a trip abroad is such a huge treat. We havent actually been in 6 years (DS 4 has never been on a plane)
Numerous reasons why that is not all money related - we could afford it.

So, if it was me I would go. It would take a lot for me to cancel a holiday. I would obviously feel horrid for a few days but I would make it clear to DH if I needed it I would be taking rest where I could

BUT ultimately it is up to you. As you say I highly doubt you would get anything on insurance. My friends husband was admitted to hospital with sepsis 2 days before their trip (hes recovered thankfully) and it took MONTHS for them to get their holiday money back from insurance...
