Be pigsick of sneaky forecast temp rises?

Anyone else exasperated? Fourth week running, temps were forecast to be under 80 for a precious few days.

Fourth week running, temps now listed as back over 80 except one day.

Next week’s a blowout of over 30C having stayed at 23ish for ages, I checked.

In London so struggling and really, really miserable now as can’t exercise locally or even get a walk in without gushing sweat.

Also isnt London in a hose pipe ban currently? So you may get in trouble for hosing your balcony.

But otherwise yes I agree - this heat sucks and I am constantly checking the weather forecast hoping for cooler days.

It's funny how some find the BBC accurate when it rarely is for us. Maybe we're more susceptible to change as we're coastal, making it harder to be right? 🤔 (Pure supposition; I've no clue how it works!)

And I agree with PP that's it's been pleasant by the coast for a good while now. Other than a blip of 29° on Monday, it's been low 20s max for a while. (We had a week of 30+ a few weeks ago, and a similar week in May, though the nights were still comparatively cool - 12-15° - for the recent heatwave where they weren't in May.)

as a child of the seventies I can switch happily between centigrade and Fahrenheit and we all know surely that if the forecast is 30 or in the nineties it's hot!
I read somewhere that the temperatures are taken in the shade at the stations so that they are accurate which means that direct sunlight is always going to feel a lot hotter. The most important part of the forecast to me is the cloud or sun indicator, 30 degrees and cloudy is very different to 30 and blazing sunshine.
We're looking to move in a couple of years and thinking about the coast or further north because of the way our summers are going.

Yes I know what you mean - it always ends up hotter than originally predicted... never the other way round!

I was thinking that! Didn't the met office and BBC stop using Fahrenheit in the 1960s? No wonder forecasts for the UK in Fahrenheit are wrong!

It was actually 1992 but it’s a tap of the finger to switch between centigrade and Fahrenheit.

Tabloids usually use Fahrenheit for warm temperatures and centigrade for cold. Presumably, it allows for a greater degree of hyperbole. The OP is actually doing the opposite.

Mate, I feel your pain. London heat in a city that’s built like an oven is absolute misery, especially when the weather app keeps teasing us with relief that never comes!

Yeah it is annoying when you thought b you might get a good few days off respite from the heat but turns out it's just one or two! Our deep edwardian terrace takes ages to cool down once it's got hot inside, so I have been running round opening every window in the rare slightly cooler days to let all the heat out.

Jealous of my son in summer camp in the Lake District where it's been 18-20 the whole time.

There are the real weather forecasts and then there are the summaries that appear in media outlets and on the apps. They are not the same.

The real forecast is a vast quantity of statistical and probability data, meaningless to anyone other than a weather scientist but also accurate within its statistical limits.

The summaries in the media or on the apps are subject to the editorial control of the writer. A few figures are cherry picked and single figures are given where the real forecast has a range of predictions.

There is a "wet bias" to some degree in all the published summaries because in general (unlike the OP) most people are more annoyed by unpredicted rain than they are by an unpredicted nice day.

It’s so strange reading this in the north of England. I’ve been wearing jeans and hoodies for the last few weeks - it’s like living in a different country!! Currently wearing a hoody, jeans and slippers in the house.

YABU to talk about temperatures in Fahrenheit though I do believe some apps let you switch between.😉

Met Office is far more accurate than BBC. But the met office app had an update which is quite annoying so you can't swipe to go back a page you have to click on specific menus. Also their icons for the whole day are very subjective, you might get a light rain cloud for the whole day, but if you click on the detail actually it is only raining from 4am to 10am, and the rest of the day is dry. Some hospitality venues like zoos were moaning about this recently as it puts people off outdoor activities as they see the icon assuming it will rain all day.

I don't think you should assume anything over 5 days is particularly reliable really, especially for a small little island in north west europe!

Frankly unless the weather is very settled most forecasts more than three/four days ahead are going to contain some degree of uncertainty.

I used to use aviation weather forecasts a lot and those get re-run and re-issued usually at least twice a day....because weather generally really isn't as guaranteed to be predictable umpteen days out as some would have you believe.

Oh, and since the F verses C argument has popped up again...officially it's been Celsius, not Centigrade for donkeys years.

We’re on the south coast, so the Brighton area. Has no problem finding work, I’m in the office 5 days a week and my husband has a fully remote job.
