Be pigsick of sneaky forecast temp rises?

Supersimkin7 · 05/08/2026 23:50

Anyone else exasperated? Fourth week running, temps were forecast to be under 80 for a precious few days.

Fourth week running, temps now listed as back over 80 except one day.

Next week’s a blowout of over 30C having stayed at 23ish for ages, I checked.

In London so struggling and really, really miserable now as can’t exercise locally or even get a walk in without gushing sweat.

Honestly this is one of the reasons I moved out of London. Our summers are only going to get hotter.

GoodkneeBadKnee · 05/08/2026 23:57

I'm in London too, and don't mind it at all.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/08/2026 00:15

@Supersimkin7 your actual question is why is the forecast never accurate, have I got that right?

Yes, it’s odd. I’ve been complaining about it for ages. I think it’s got something to do with using computers to read the data rather than human beings.

This summer, I’ve got to know a local forecaster (total amateur) and he’s been getting it right a month or so in advance. Like really right. So he will say “ there will be a spike in temperature on the ninth” and he will tell you that on the 17th of the previous month. I don’t know if it’s just coincidence, but he has been spookily accurate.

He’s now away for the rest of the month but the midweek spike next week? He told me about that. I don’t even know how people read these models, it’s all a mystery to me.

principalskinna · 06/08/2026 02:10

I hate forecasts in Fahrenheit 😁

ParchedGarden · 06/08/2026 02:40

Is it the BBC? Aren’t they moving to or from the Met Office? And whatever they’re moving to is going to be more accurate?

Apple temperatures are supposed to be quite accurate.

UncomfortableSilence · 06/08/2026 05:05

I mainly use the Met Office app, it only shows the forecast 5 days ahead and is generally accurate, BBC weather and the iPhone weather app are always changing especially BBC as I’ve always assumed they can’t accurately forecast that far ahead.

Sympathies though, I’m in London too and it really has been a run of weather. I do love the sun and heat and it’s nice to feel that we are getting a proper summer but appreciate it’s not for everyone. DD1 and DH have had some awful tube journeys and my office has been unbearable with no air con and as a PP said, I think we are going to have to adapt as it looks like summers like these will be a regular thing.

Supersimkin7 · 06/08/2026 05:39

It’s 530am. No sleep but first coffee in 3 months on the terrace cos it’s not too hot on the feet!

Every flippin day I have to hose down my huge overhanging balcony so the cats don’t get burnt paws 🐾. Plants cool the place a bit too, cats love a shady bush.

IPhone forecast too gloomy to consider, just enjoying the lone normal summer day.

We moved to the seaside and honestly it’s bliss. Cooler than the cities and often milder in the winter. I’d recommend it!

LlynTegid · 06/08/2026 07:11

What annoys me is the forecast seemingly for weeks saying it will rain next week. I mentioned this at an event I was at earlier in the week and others agreed with me.

As to how it affects everyone, it's night time temperatures that are the issue to me, and last night being a few degrees less warm was welcome.

Zanatdy · 06/08/2026 07:17

yep was looking forward to a few cooler days. Now only today and 30 again. Been hot now since end of May constantly. I am leaving London for the north next month.

chedderland · 06/08/2026 07:19

I didn’t know anyone still used Fahrenheit in the uk apart from my mum.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/08/2026 07:20

I use weather forecasts a lot for work, and we do a lot of cross over work with the Met Office (as an aside, the BBC use Meteo, not MetOffice. The service is out out to tender every few years). Weather forecasting in a bit of a black art, with a lot of variables. The models used are not keeping up with changing weather patterns. Some weather forecasters wil I. “Worst case” and some on “most likely”. So several reasons for discrepancies between forecasts A meteorologist told me once, that statistically he’d be correct most often if he always just said “same as yesterday”.

Me too. I think apart from people who are in the US, it is only people over 80 who use Fahrenheit.

JehovasFitness · 06/08/2026 07:48

I use the Met Office. I’m in the north west. It’s usually very accurate a few days out.

It is close to useless abroad, perhaps because of where they get their data from.

Especially when all forecasts are in Celsius, which means someone has gone to the trouble of converting into Fahrenheit.

Yes, Polyester work clothes are my new enemy

LaurieFairyCake · 06/08/2026 08:25

Yes, the app keeps lying to me. Thought yesterday was only going to be 27, in the end it ‘felt’ over 30 according to the app

LaurieFairyCake · 06/08/2026 08:26

Today is blissfully cool in London, 17 at the moment. It feels so good after the last few weeks

I don't find the Met Office app accurate for rain. I use MO for temps and Weather Radar for rain. If they're really conflicting, I'll check the BBC as a third option (rarely right, mind!).

I can convert both ways in my head. I'm not sure why anyone would go to the trouble of converting to F when the nation uses C, mind you! I don't need the maths practice, thanks all the same. 🤣

ETA: a lot of people posting about frustration at the hot weather have used Fahrenheit on MN. Strange theme!

HermioneWeasley · 06/08/2026 08:32

I voted YABU because of the word “sneaky”.

you can feel however you want about the weather, but nobody is lying about it on purpose to trick you

Which town did you move to if you want to say? Was it easy to find work there or are you working remotely?

I've noticed that the Met Office forecast tends to be more cautious than the BBC's; it shows lower max temperatures in hot spells and slightly higher ones in cold spells.

The BBC is very good for pinpointing the time it will start to rain, though. The other day it forecast a shower at 11.00 and it started to rain at 11.05!

chirrupybird · 06/08/2026 08:39

I find the BBC pretty much right at least for short term, a few days, the further ahead you try to predict the less accurate it becomes.

Yesterday we had highest chance of rain at 10am (not a very high chance) dead on 10: a very light sprinkle, not enough to do any good for the garden, but I did bring the washing in.
