AIBU to think plain crisps means ready salted at the pub?

I asked for plain Crisps at a pub and the barman asked me so what flavour? I said ready Salted. I thought that plain Crisps naturally meant ready Salted, but since I have been told I was "showing my age" by asking in such a way. I'm 45 years old. Really?

You must be a soft southerner up north we’d ask for tayto salted

Marmite27 · 02/08/2026 18:14

I’m in Yorkshire and a bag of plain crisps is definitely a packet of ready salted!

Chooseabiscuit · 02/08/2026 18:15

In my 20s, would also think plain is ready salted. Not an age thing.

Yes, I'm definitely not a southerner, I am from Yorkshire 😂

Yes I think it’s a bit old fashioned more like what my mum would say. They are called ready salted. Plain are those smiths you add salt to in little blue packet.

theneighboureatmysalad · 02/08/2026 18:16

If "plain" does not mean ready salted, what would they mean?

Plain = ready salted, YANBU at all. It's not an age thing, plenty of little children use that wording, as well as elderly people.

Unseasoned

I don’t think you can get those any more, can you? Ready to be corrected if I’m wrong.
To me, plain crisps definitely means salted but no added flavours.

Not in Yorkshire we don't.

I agree with the OP. Plain just means ready salted.

DonaldWheresMaTweezers · 02/08/2026 18:22

Funnily enough, my husband had exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Asked for 'plain crisps' in the pub - barman didn't know what he meant.

Yes these ones. They are walkers now.

These naked ones made me smile.

Plain means no flavour and the crisps with the least flavour are ready salted bartender was having a moment 😂

itsgettingweird · 02/08/2026 18:26

Yep plain = ready salted.

Im the same age as you, I am a southerner - and I live where the old Smiths crisps factory use to be 😂

CrypticClueless · 02/08/2026 18:27

Plain means ready salted
Ready Salted means plain

And surely it’s bloody obvious even if you usually say ‘ready salted’ that plain means not flavoured? As in not prawn cocktail, sweet chilli etc etc?

Especially as all the flavoured crisps are also ready and salted.

WhatASmashingBlouseYouHaveOn · 02/08/2026 18:28

He was a young barman. When I asked if they had a certain flavour Crisps he also recited the biscuit selection as well...I thought no I don't want biscuits, I asked about Crisps 😆

I always think it’s excellent when they have beef hula hoops as an option!

yep plain = salted

Although… the pub is the only time I will opt for a grab bag of quavers!

ginasevern · 02/08/2026 18:33

I'm a southerner in my late sixties (for full declaration!) and plain crisps to me means ready salted. I'd be more likely to say "plain" crisps than ask for ready salted.

Needmorelego · 02/08/2026 18:39

I find in some food places if I ask for "tomato sauce" I get a blank look until I say "ketchup" instead 😂

Tayto Salted? I’ve never come across them. Salt and vinegar yes but never just salt. They don’t sell them in Ireland by the looks of it. Maybe they’re NI taytos? I’m impressed though that your default is Tayto. They are far superior to other crisps.

Here, you just ask for a bag of tayto and that means cheese and onion.

Only in Ireland or NI surely?

Bar staff dont know what they're talking about half the time.

What the hell is Tayto’s salted?? 🤔😳

Proper Tayto’s are cheese & onion only!!!

Yes OP, plain crisps have always meant ready salted.

RaraRachael · 02/08/2026 18:47

Definitely plain crisps in Scotland.

I've never said ready salted in my life.
