AIBU to think plain crisps means ready salted at the pub?

I asked for plain Crisps at a pub and the barman asked me so what flavour? I said ready Salted. I thought that plain Crisps naturally meant ready Salted, but since I have been told I was "showing my age" by asking in such a way. I'm 45 years old. Really?

Only in Ireland or NI surely?

Not in Ireland. Just salted is a newish thing in Ireland that some of the fancy brands started doing a while back. I some supermarket own brands might do them too now.

WimbyAce · 02/08/2026 18:48

I would always call them plain. I never say ready salted!

Velvera · 02/08/2026 18:51

Don't most people call them plain crisp? I don't think I've ever asked for a packet of ready salted crisps.

LittleSoo · 02/08/2026 19:06

I'm also Yorkshire and plain crisps are ready salted. Barman probably used to being asked a flavour list and went on auto pilot 😂

chocoluv · 02/08/2026 19:15

I am younger than you and always say plain for ready salted.

However, I do wonder how many people still eat walkers crisps compared to other types and so this person may have never eaten ready salted crisps before.

I don’t think you can get those any more, can you? Ready to be corrected if I’m wrong.
To me, plain crisps definitely means salted but no added flavours.

You can get them in some pound shops, Home Bargains/B&M etc, but in my many years of going in pubs I’ve never once seen them for sale.

I’m feeling all nostalgic now. The pub I used to work in did scampi fries, bacon fries and bags of salt & vinegar Squares which would usually be bought with a pickled egg. We’d open the bag and drop the egg inside. It was not a classy place 😁

I've just asked my 19yo what flavour crisps she would give someone if they asked for plain crisps, and she gave me the Hmm face and then said, "plain, obviously."

When I asked her what flavour plain crisps are, I got another Hmm face followed by "they don't have flavour, they're plain."

We eventually established plain crisps are the ones in the red bag and are also referred to as salted, but salt is not a flavour. Beef is a flavour, salt is just salt.

He was a young barman. When I asked if they had a certain flavour Crisps he also recited the biscuit selection as well...I thought no I don't want biscuits, I asked about Crisps 😆

Well there you are then.

It’s a barman thing, IQ, experience or nouse . Not an age or North / South thing

Yes, it seems to be the general consensus I'm glad to hear 😀he did seem a bit deer in the headlights about it. I also had to direct him to the beer I wanted which was on draft and has been for years.

Just wanted to check I wasn't being an old fuddy duddy already, thanks everyone 😊
